I know there’s some people that don’t live around here and possibly will never see the ships here in Duluth so I want to get out there and catch as many good ships as I can for people. When in the US Navy, we went to Hawaii several times. -really loved sailing around the islands. Honolulu and Waikiki just had too many people so I decided to walk around Diamond head and visit the zoo. Turned out great. I also found a terrific steak house hidden on the end of a mall that most of the locals used and virtually no tourist knew was there. During my seven years of sea during on three ships, I often sought places away from the crowd. I was able to meet a lot of wonderful people and saw many tourist sites and lesser know places that were just as wonderful.

@@vibewithmike Honestly Mike, there are many outstanding places around the Great Lakes that are as good as Hawaii. Yes, it is nice to be in Hawaii during the Winter. Most people do not know that there are places just as nice that are unknown because they are not covered by the media. There are a lot of beautiful islands in the Caribbean, and in around the coastal USA. My favorite is the intercoastal waterway between Seattle, Washington USA and Vancouver, Canada because of the huge amount of wildlife and fishing. Almost, returned and retired there. The Great Lakes area was better for me because of Loved ones and we have nearly the same here. Visiting elsewhere is OK, living is better here.

Mike, another neat video. Thought you might find the following interesting. In 2023 she visited 20 ports and traveled 69,000 miles. She started from Spain on 2/7, then left Portugal on 2/15. Then she was off to Turkey leaving there on 3/11. Next up was Montreal. On 4/2 she departed Montreal bound for Duluth. From Turkey she ventured over 5,500 miles. So it's clear this crew likes to travel !!

It really is going to change the game how we are able to view these ships. Many times we are limited because they are going to the dock or the anchor. Not no more! The Boat friends flag will be flying right out onto the lake to capture these big ships. However, I want to point out. I will be very careful and safety will be number one. I spent a lot of time at Rotary Park at the Sugar Islander Ferry chasing ships, plus we went down to Barbeau to see them and eat at Cozy Corners they have fantastic food. March was just a quick 3 day vacation, we went to the property we bought and did some figuring out where we wanted to put driveway ect.

What a mammoth vessel….makes all the other very large ships we regularly see look small by comparison! Thank goodness for the navigational instruments that ascertain ahead of time how much space is needed, so that a ship such as this does not get hung up on the lift bridge! Do you get many ocean going vessels coming through Duluth? I like the perspective from the boat friends boat- very nice. It’s good of the authorities who administrate the bridge activities to allow you in the channel, for filming purposes. It was interesting to see the role that the tug played. Is that because such a large ship would have trouble making a sharp turn- or am I mistaken about that?

Janet, thankfully, the canal under the bridge is public water, and it can be used by anybody whether you are kayaking, using your boat, anything. Everything but swimming. So I’m able to turn around in the canal or do whatever I want. However, there is a no wake zone in there, and you have to be cautious and respectful to other boaters

And I think of how far that salty will have to go to get back home…..through the Great Lakes, out through the St. Lawrence seaway, out to the Atlantic…and on. What a life of adventure.

@LoriLeaPouttu I actually have a life vest that is super interesting and very lightweight. A lot of the life jackets feel like you’re wearing an actual jacket this one just wraps around my neck and over the front of me kind of like a collar that goes down the front and it’s very thin. It’s Coast Guard certified. I’m able to pull a cord and it inflates so that way I don’t have to walk around with a bulky lifevest. I guess my long-winded point is in case I did fall overboard I’ll be OK.

You were exactly exactly right. There’s no anchor and one of the people in this video had a comment saying that they called the Coast Guard or something happen like that. It’s amazing. Take a look at the comment of the very top of the comment section. He mentioned the Coast Guard.

@@vibewithmike Hi Mike the ship is a ocean going ship almost a tramp steamer ! taking what ever cargo they can get ? with the cranes they usually load hard cargo I'm surprized they are comming for wheat Years ago a similar ship came into port stanley and loaded monster mining trucks in pieces for yougoslavia ( think I spelt that right ) Could never do that with 1000 footers I see it is mentioned one of the anchors is missing ? If the anchor really got hung up on something and the ship couldn't power back and forth digging it out of the bottom and had to cut it free they probably lost a substantial amount of chain with it Another sinario the anchor brake failed and the chain kept on going ! When I worked on the ocean in 1964 they figured a ship needed a refit every 20 years because of rust and things siezing up because of salt build up Have a great day ! Mike and Boat friends !

Yes, it does. You could see it laying down on the boat. It’s covered in blue. All I have to do is unwrap it, and it opens all the way up over the top.

There’s a good chance down the road. When I started doing this channel, I always said to myself. I wanna make this about the ships and kind of keep a little bit of curiosity about who I might be. Don’t worry, there have been many people that have met me on the piers. In a way, it’s fun being anonymous. Many times I’m watching the ships right next to the bridge without a camera and nobody would know. I hope you’re doing fantastic there in Ireland. Good morning. This ship looks like a good example of the use of the bottom of ship painted red as has been the case for centuries Old wood schooners used red paint to prevent wood worms and barnicle growth Red paint contains copper and as such an oxide that deters rust, algae and other organisms growth. Seems to me a really good reason to regularly paint the bottom of ship. The green upper portion of the Jessica is a great contrast
