Mike says "it has that look", his keen eyes have spotted a unique ship indeed. From my perspective seeing this ship entering the harbour on video, it appears to have a narrow beem. I wonder if it does for obvious reasons. Entering locks, especially in Europe, operating on European rivers. Ships with its operations forward at the bow are favorite for me to see. Back to the video for me, to see this magnificent ship gracefully navigate into the the Port Of Duluth for all to see. 🧐

Hello, hello Captain!!👋 Nice to see some calm wind for a change. Although the wind and wave action is always fun. How awesome is it to have a ship named after such a beautiful queen. She looks very modern. Very narrow design. Love the red, white, and gray. Interesting whistle and no return from the lift bridge. I am torn on my favorite ship. I like the JRB because of her horn and I also like the American Century too. Thank you for showing us this great modern saltie. Hope you had a great Thursday!!! Take care my friend and chat later. 🙋🚢

Karen, it’s a delight to see your fun daily comment. I always love your input. It’s hard for me to explain how fun it was to be next to the ship. A lot of things worked out very well. The pilot boat was right next to me with the tugboat at the same time with the Maxima. It went by very quietly as well for being such a big ship. Can you imagine that Maxima going down the Mississippi river there in Saint Paul?😂👋👍⛴️

@@vibewithmikeChuck’s description and analysis is spot on. This boat has to sail the North Sea in brutally tough conditions. Interesting how they Incorporated the Pilot House into the overall configuration of the massive bow. Of course that massive bow is integral to the Ice Breaking capability. Mike, I'm thinking that the one long blast we heard is the “blind bend signal.” It is used to indicate an approaching bend to heads-up alert any oncoming traffic which might not see the ship. We have experienced this before with foreign ships and even American ships in poor visibility situations. Since this isn't a salute, the lift bridge operator didn't reply back.

My favorite ships were the three I served on while in the US Navy. They were the USS Canberra CAG-2, USS Dahlgren DLG-12, and the USS Jouett CG-29 . The Canberra was a small city. It was in the Cuban Missile Crisis, and was President Kennedy's flag ship in Bermuda when he was there (He never road her, Eisenhour did earlier). The Dahlgren was a sleek, nimble, sweet sailing ship. She graced the water. The Jouett had a power of its own in that it tried to be first and the best. Jouett obtained a Bravo-Zero (Well Done) from the Congressional Inspection Team when I was onboard.

My favorite ships are from the past, early 1900's into the 1960's. Freighters and now in a modern world referred to as container ships. The history in the transformation from freighter ships to container ships is interesting indeed! How early container ships were retro fitted into container ships, being around 9,000 TEU ships. Today, modern container ships can be upwards of 23,000 TEU vessels. TEU, twenty foot equivalent units, a measurement used to identify the number of containers a ship can transport. Units today are mostly double the twenty foot, forty feet and even a bit longer than that. If a ship is a 18,500 TEU vessel, that means is can carry 18,500 twenty foot long containers or haft that amount if the containers were forty feet in length. Modern day container vessels can transport upwards of over 12,000 containers. Mind boggling to think about. Thanks for the information on this modern ship. Names on ships to me is like names on thoroughbred race horses, not to be changed, to keep the attachment of history deserving of such importance as a ship that exists in time most alien to all, beyond the safety of harbour.

Last time it was here it picked up a beet pulp derivative? Am I correct? Is it doing the same thing again? seems crazy it comes all that way for beet pulp. Doesn't seem to be a very high dollar item. I buy it at Tractor Supply for like 25 bucks in a 50lb bag! LOL. Yes very snazzy ship. So cool it was built with pilothouse forward, I thought I read somewhere that the reason laker builders stopped doing it was for more visibility when handling. Anyone know if that is true?

What amazing crisp colors, lettering even the glass windows look brand new. This ship looks like it just came off the assembly line. Maybe I am not using logical thinking but ships from European countries look so incredibly sharp even though they have sustained a long journey in salt water. How do they do it! Even the design of the vessel is smart, up to date. Our Lakers may be in use more but what a comparison. How can this not be a favorite..only possible criticism is the weak horn, hardly worth mentioning in the scheme of things.

Great video! Yes indeed, a very interesting ship. The new designs they're coming up with are certainly futuristic. Favorite ships, I have several. Great Lakes ships would be the Paul R Tregurtha as it's the biggest there is. Second would be the Arthur M Anderson, not just because of her place in history tied to the Edmund Fitzgerald but the history she makes every day in her own right as one of the last 4 steam powered ships on the Great Lakes. Ocean going ships would be the Dockwise Vanguard heavy lift ship. Any ship that can submerge itself and float its cargo onto its back and refloat itself is an engineering masterpiece. To see that ship carry oil platforms on her back will blow your mind. And the Queen Mary 2 tops my list as favorite ocean going ship. It's just magnificent and at another level with staff, food and accommodations. Did a transatlantic once in a Queens Grill Penthouse Suite and it was incredible. Private butler and the suite was huge. Would do it again in a heartbeat. Military ship would be the battleship USS Iowa as it's named after my home state and the history it has made in and since WWII. She may be retired and on display as a floating museum now, but she's a majestic ship that demonstrated the power of this great nation in the seven seas around the world on many conflicts and routine exercises. Keep up the good work, Mike!

@@vibewithmike Thank you for your kind words. The Dockwise Corp (now Boka) built a whole fleet of heavy lift ships. The Vanguard is by far the largest. The first heavy lift ship they built is the Blue Marlin and it's the ship that brought home the USS Cole from the port of Aden after it was damaged by the suicide bombers who blew a huge hole in her hull and killed several sailors onboard. I saw the Vanguard leaving port down in Malaysia with an oil platform o her back for Petronas. It is one of the most incredible things I have ever observed and I can see the SpaceX rockets going into space from my pool deck on the opposite coast of Florida from where I live. Used to see the Space Shuttles launch too. Once they got several thousand feet up we can see the rockets in Naples on the West coast of Florida. You can even see the stages separate and fall away. And the Dockwise Vanguard with that giant oil platform on her back was more astonishing than that!

The two ships that you mentioned are the Rockstars of the shipping world. The Fitzgerald, one of the most important ships ever on the Great Lakes. Speaking of the Fitzgerald. Trust me on this, when you have about a half an hour, please listen to this. It’s the most fascinating piece of audio and you literally get sucked into that night when the Edmund Fitzgerald sank. This is the actual Coast Guard audio from that night. You’ll hear the Captain of the Arthur Anderson agreeing to go out to look for the Fitz. My favorite ship is the USCG Eagle. My first sight of her was in a newsreel (yes, I'm dating myself) that I saw in the movie theatre when I was young. The white ship and white sails against the blue of the sky and ocean left a permanent impression on me. That started my love affair with the tall ships and later came the small but mighty tugboats ( I tend to go for the underdog). I became interested with the current Great Lakes freighters after seeing clips like yours, introducing the many workhorses of the lakes and their histories. It's fun to learn of the different cargoes they carry and their ports of call. It's also fun to see the tugboats going out to do their jobs assisting ships in maneuvering in the harbor. So far, the ones I've caught the names of are the Kentucky, North Carolina and Missouri in Duluth Harbor. I looked up the build years on them and it's amazing that these old ladies are still working effectively at their jobs.
