The Meteor was initially used to counter the V-1 flying bomb threat. 616 Squadron Meteors saw action for the first time on 27 July 1944, when three aircraft were active over Kent. These were the first operational jet combat missions for the Meteor and for the Royal Air Force.

Cap seemed to be unaware of the Meteor when someone else mentioned it early in the video. A gap in his knowledge that needs filling, they were indeed used for V1 interception successfully. Also, I am assuming noone has created a Gloster Meteor model for DSC yet, or at least they do not have it in their version.

The aircraft used to intercept V-1s used higher octane fuel and extra boost to try to match the speed of the V-1s. The Spitfire XIV with the extra boost could almost do 400mph at sea level (someone mentioned only getting 365), and the Tempest a bit above. Some Mosquitoes were fitted with nitrous oxide to get extra speed. NF Mosquitoes could also intercept them at night, whereas the others maybe not so well. The Tempest was the most successful fighter, scoring 638 V-1s. The next best were the Mosquito (623 victories), Spitfire XIV (303), and Mustang (232). The most successful method of shooting V-1s down was anti-aircraft guns with radar control and proximity fuses.

This has been interesting for me, as my mum and three other"r ladies that stayed together throughout the war, were in the WRAF and in an office called, Special Intelligence Reporting Office! Called SIRO'S for short! They had to a direct line to his (Churchill's) office and used to report mostly Duncan Sands! However! My mum told me that some times a person used to pick up the phone but not answer! Mum often wondered who that person was! They used to report daily on V1's d then V2's So this was very interesting for me! My mum passed away in 2019 aged 95 R.I.P 😥Thank you for that interesting vlog!

These things are quite easy within the single player campaign with the Spit Mk 14 and the 150 octane fuel. The sim gives you a reasonable patrol area. Best tactic I found was a steady high speed climb to around 12,000 feet then pulling lots of lead in a diving turn at max power and blowing them out the sky at about 450 yards. Not tried the wing tipping technique as yet, however the single player campaign adds lots of angry pixel Luftwaffe into the mix. They usually bounce you with attitude advantage. Generally speaking by this time your Griffon is wanting to explode so its time to get home for tea, cake and medals.

There was a ww2 flight combat game I played a few times on my Commodore 64 back when I was a kid, I cannot remember the name of it now, but one of the missions was a V-1 intercept like this, and it was every damn bit as hard as this was. I remember never being able to kill them with guns, the only success I had was taking a plane that mounted unguided rockets to blow the damn things up. It was a fun game I should have played more. Wish I could remember it's name, I'd go bust it out on VICE and see if my memories match the reality. EDIT: Pancudowny named it a couple of posts down, it was Ace of Aces. Fun video here, thanks for triggering the memories too!

They would get above them. Then they would go inverted pull down. They would gain air speed pull up on the wing and flip it over. It would cause the V1 to nose dive into the ground. You really didn't want to shoot it. It was so powerful to get close enough to shoot it down could cause damage to your plane.
