I just wanna add to the "it's okay to not find an idol attractive" thing. It should also be okay to not find every single new hairstyle/hair color attractive. There have been many times where an idol I love gets a new haircut/color and everyone's like "omg they look amazing" and I just think.... no lol. They obviously look good usually, but sometimes the hairstyles really aint it and no, they can't pull off anything and that's fine. because no one can. For example I don't really find blue hair attractive on most idols, few can actually pull it off, the only one that comes in my mind rn is 2ne1's Dara. and the hairstyle helped to that a lot, too. Also those very short bangs that Irene had in Red Flavor and Yuna in Not Shy, were ugly as hell. Yuna is such a beautiful girl but got done so dirty.

I disagree with the fixed position opinion. There will be fanwars no matter what. I've seen stans fighting saying their fav deserves the main position and not the person who actually have the position and end up degrading them to explain why their fav deserve it more. I've seen people fight over line distribution saying their fav being the main vocalist should get the most lines or their fav who has the main dancer position should be the center during dance breaks and when this doesn't happen they claim mistreatment, say horrible things not only towards the company but also the other members who probably doesn't have anything to do with all this. Kpop stans just find ways to make everything toxic so I don't stress over groups having fixed positions or not.

If they wanted her to get so many lines they shouldve just made her the main vocal. But they could’ve have bc jihyo is objectively a better singer. Plus having lead with jeongyeon and jeongyeon being treated worse than their sub vocals most of the time, they shouldn’t have given jeongyeon lead vocal. But obviously she’s again, objectively better than everyone else. The company should really just stick to the positions because that’s honestly the only way to protect the artists at this point when it comes to vocals. As for dance, idk what to say the company completely screwed that up so they have to give jihyo and sana more center/front for public satisfaction. As much as it sucks like I said there’s no way to fix it but give in :(

I disagree with the "not being big in Korea is not as tragic as you make it out to be" and the examples you chose are very telling to me. Loona and Everglow are 4th gen groups that debuted fairly recently. We still can't tell how their careers will turn out to be, since they haven't reached their 7th year yet. They haven't even reached their fifth. All of the 3rd gen groups that didn't have a strong Korean fanbase are not doing well or disbanded. It's sad but it's the truth. International fans tend to be multistans and/or move on from one group to another way more quickly than Korean fans. That could change if 4th gen groups (who mostly have a bigger international fanbase than Korean) actually break the 7th year curse.

Hybe doesn't actually control releases. Pledis manages their own groups, BH manages their own groups and SoMu is in the same boat. Hybe doesn't even manage Belift. That's done by CJ. So if they want they could even throw Enha into the mix. I would guess this is because they are aware that they don't have as many 'company stans'. Each group has their own core fanbase and very little overlap 🤔. For BH they only had Butter and 0X1 release a week apart because Butter had no physical album so Moas has a chance on music shows. Otherwise both groups usually move about a month or so apart which is fine.

They do support their money makers - look at Gdragon. The thing is less money comes from making music. More money comes from CFs. Other companies like JYP, HYBE grab attention by releasing more and more music but YG has been exploring another tactic which is depriving fans so they crave more. They know what they're doing.

About Billlie: They truly have no 'black hole' regarding stage presence. They also have really good stamina, especially for a rookie group, which makes them already good live performers. I've found kpop during 2nd gen as a teenager and genuinely thought I'd probably fade out of it now, as I'm approaching my 30s and most of my old faves disband or are on a forever-hiatus and most new idols are literally the same age as my students (I'm a HS teacher). But lately, groups such as Billlie have made me think that I'll probably casually stick around some time longer, just because I'm genuinely looking forward to what they're going to do next.

This might be a bit controversial... But I feel the same way about Cha Eunwoo. I have seen people gushing over him, and rightfully so, but I just never felt physically attracted to him. However, if you expressed this to other fans, you will probably be attacked. I've seen people even call other fans ugly or crazy just because they didn't find him attractive... There's no doubt that he's handsome and extremely talented, but just never really felt attracted to him. I even watch some of his dramas and enjoyed them. But fans need to understand that just because some people might not find a particular idol attractive - doesn't necessarily mean they find them ugly or hate them. It just means that they're physically attracted to them. I think it's find to express that, as long as you are not degrading their looks or them as a person.

I agree completely with the first opinion too. The problem with this is that the industry markets and promotes them this way. Which hooks fans in, and the more fans love it that way the more companies force their groups to do it so they can gain more attention. It's a terrible cycle that's been so convoluted that it's hard to break it. In the end idols lie to their fans and fans get anxiety that it could all be fake. I wish they could just be honest like shinee and Brown Eyed Girls. At the end of it all, being an idol is a job and all the closeness, skinship, and friendship they portray? That's fan service.

About the companies go for money makers, I only agree till a certain degree. So here me out: Let's take JYP as an example cuz I know about that company very well as a Stay, Once, Midzy, MyDay, Ahgase (i know they're not in it anymore but this is about when they were), etc. If you look at 3rd gens, you'd see what you said. JYP obviously put more money into TWICE, and lesser into Got7 comparatively, and even lesser into Day6. Like Twice promotions were always top notch, Got7 promotions could do better and have better planning, whereas Day6... although there were promotions and stuff, people barely knew them? And this is because TWICE was just more famous than the other two boy groups. They had their survival show, a solid fanbase, the visuals to go with gg's, they were doing well in the industry, etc. Not to say the other two weren't - Got7 is super popular too, but lesser than Twice, and although Day6 has a loyal fanbase, there are many scandals around them, and since they're a band, they don't have the same exposure to the general public, hence sales and streams aren't similar. This similar pattern is true for most 3rd gens. Most companies always invested in the money makers. HOWEVER, from what I've seen, this changed when 4th gen started. With the globalization of Kpop, hitting a million views is pretty simple for even a super newbie group. But these views and more popularity are only possible with proper investment. If you look at JYP's 4th gen groups, like Stray Kids, Itzy, and even the super new gg NMIXX or even Xdinary Heroes (which is a BAND like Day6), *ALL* of them have a great mv. All of them are participating in various reality shows, getting content like "SKZ talker" "Itzy? Itzy!" or "Xdinary files" etc on their yt channels. Sure, there is still a distribution in money where Skz gets more, but that's only because they make their own music so they have the money for have extra mv's or shows. Or like itzy, who may have extra money due to their recent modelling jobs. But that doesn't mean the other groups are neglected. In fact, if you look at it, 4th gen groups have A LOT of money invested into them. IVE, KEP1ER, NMIXX, XDINARY HEROES... like these are popular and SUPER NEW groups. But they're still so well funded and have the same mv quality as other older or more money-making groups. And ik being part of a good company is part of the reason, but even RBW (a smaller company) or CUBE, are investing so much on their 4th gen groups like ONEUS and GIDLE compared to their 3rd gen groups like MAMAMOO and BTOB. This is because the change from 3rd to 4th gen marked the change of KPOP's popularity. Now, companies know that the more they invest in a group - no matter if they have literally just debuted - they WILL see the results, because of an excess number of reactors, an excess of an audience, etc. With proper promotions and teasers, even groups that HAVEN'T debuted yet, like Trainee A etc, can have predebut fans. Like this is all a business strategy and its working seamlessly. Thats why I just agree with what you said about companies only investing in their money maker groups. There might be a VERY slight increase in their budgets, but its very small. Moreover, as long as a company is okay, I think they support the newer generations more than the moneymakers.

There are those that find stage presence in the Idol world weak overall (me). The term is, indeed, used very loosely imo. But I'm willing to bet we won't agree on who has it and who doesn't. In the end some groups attract a lot of ppl to their performances and some don't. In the opinion of stage presence, majority really does rule so arguments on it are largely irrelevant.

to be honest, I think its not wrong for companies to favor their biggest group. they have a right to use more money on the artist that brings them more money and it is risky sometimes to invest more in smaller groups because if their comeback isnt successful the company would be at loss as well as the artists. for example, if you had a youtube video topic that gained a lot more attention and extra followers than other topics, of course you would most likely redo that topic to get more fame. I disagree with fixed position because I seen where the main is weaker and the lead is better then them by a long shot or sometimes by a little. I agree completely with the first opinion too. The problem with this is that the industry markets and promotes them like family or in a way that promotes ships. The variety shows they guest in, their personal variety shows, the daily snippets of their lives, the vlogs. These are all things that promote their so-called 'bond". Which hooks fans in, and the more fans love it that way the more companies force their groups to do it so they can gain more attention. We cannot deny that it is a big money maker so the industry fuels it. It's a terrible cycle that's been so convoluted that it's hard to break it. I don't think that most groups don't get along of course but I'm sure a lot of them see what they have to do as work. Some get along, sure, cause if u are gonna live and work together with someone for years I think it's important to make your lives together decent so u won't go crazy. But they probably aren't too close. It's i think how people r like with their co workers irl. Sometimes u like them enough and other times there's someone u dislike. In the end idols may lie to their fans about closeness and since this is something fans realize can happen, they get anxiety that it could all be fake. I think you underestimate the effect spending so much time together under grueling conditions can have on relationships. Not saying all idols are super close or anything, but being coworkers definitely isn’t the same as living with people for years and training with them 14+ hours a day. I definitely think while not all idols are close it’s likely they at least have somewhat strong relationships with each other whether positive or negative. As a normal dancer who doesn’t even live with my team in just a few months I became quite fond of all of them even if we aren’t best friends necessarily and most everyone else over the years has gotten really close. Just adding in that perspective. It’s unlikely most idols are faking their close relationships a ton (although they probably are a little bit at least). I will say I think the whole every member is close with every single person on their team thing is a super weird and unrealistic ideal fans have. In a group of 4 maybe to an extent. But much bigger than that and I’m sure there are some people who’re just kinda neutral to certain others 🤷🏽‍♀️

i agree that companies give boy groups bad boy concepts because it sells the most. at the same time, the concept has become so overused that it becomes difficult for a boy group to stand out among 50 other boy groups doing the same concept. i feel like if companies gave their boy groups newer concepts, it would help them stand out and gain more attention. polaroid love by enhypen and darari by treasure did so well and they were only b-sides. yet, both of them are among the most well-received songs by boy groups this year.

some kpop stans think stage presence is only about facial expressions and it’s not. stage presence is “the charm or charisma a performer has to draw their audience in,” so facial expressions are a factor in stage presence, but not all it is. other factors are connecting with your audience, your posture/body language, making eye contact with the crowd, communicating with the crowd (saying things like “are you ready?”) being confident, etc. not just facial expressions. i’m not saying that billie aren’t good, but kpop stans throw around “stage presence” without knowing anything about it.

Most 4th gen girl groups have had comebacks with empowering and the self-love kinda concept. Itzy' 3 first releases are about being different and loving yourself, G-idle's tomboy is about being themselves and not changing who they are for love or anyone, Billlie's gingamingayo is about adapting to the world as you group up, Le sserafim's fearless is about knowing what you want and not being afraid to do anything to get it, aespa's whole concept has nothing to do with love, nmixx is all about hyping themselves up, and even Ive's love dive, even if it's love related, it talks about being intoxicated with self-love and it's got references to the story of narcissus. That all without even mentioning any girl group b-sides. Girl groups sing about very diverse topics and have many concepts, I think you just need to search more for them.

In regards to the opinion about “fame: internationally versus domestic,” I feel like it depends on the individuals in these singing groups. I feel like… For some singers, this (the lack of fame and recognition in South Korea) can be “the monkey on their back” for the rest of their careers - and maybe for the rest of their lives. For other singers, it could end up being a passing regret, which fades as their life goes on. But I do feel like wealth, fame and career opportunities (outside of S. Personally, when it comes to facial expression I'm someone who is right in the middle Tsuki's expression for me is too much because it seems like she is changing her facial expression every line but kudos to her for atleast trying to make expressions and i understand why some people prefer these expressions, I also don't like when an idol have no expressions (blank) at all. I’m not a Stan, but even I can tell how good their music is & most people, even if some still do, haven’t flocked to watch post-produce members redebut groups & solo careers. Less than 15 people out of the 1st 3 seasons final lineups (out of 46 people total in other words), have actually had continual massive success. That’s not a lot unlike how people act like it’s an automatic pass & all of them are doing so good because most of them aren’t with their careers either going dark or barely hearing anything about them.

I think in some cases it's fair to assume some members are hella close. If we know they were friends before they even auditioned? Fair to assume they are close. If they show they are close in other ways than just telling fans they are close? Fair enough to assume. Best example are San and Wooyoung from Ateez. Dude's have literally friendship matching tattoos and Wooyoung calls San's dad "dad". As for the fixed positions - yes, but they would have to be updated. Again, San from Ateez as the example. He was decent dancer when they debuted, now he often takes the center, because he improved so much. Sometimes groups debut "too early" in terms of one or two members' training so they literally did not developed the skilled to the full potential. Also, realistically speaking, the positions do not always represent the actual skill. You can have one member being top rapper and dancer, and if there is another really good (but not as good) dancer, who does not have any other well developed skill to take another position, the best dancer in the group will be named "main rapper" and 2nd best dancer will become "main dancer". Not to mention some positions are such a bullshit for me. "Face of the group/visual"? This should not be a main position for anyone. Sure, additional indication, but not THE MAIN THING someone introduces themselves as. What it tells me is their musical skills (be it singing, rapping, dancing or performance overall) are less important and good than their face? I know it's not always the case, and many faces of the group are extremely skilled in other areas, but it's so weird for the company to flex the face and not said skills for a group that is part of music industry...

This is just my opinion, but for girl groups I prefer dark concepts but for boy groups I prefer lighter/cuter concepts. Not always though. I might prefer that for boy groups but I like the darker concepts for them too. But for girl groups I don’t like the cuter concepts that much, not hate, just my opinion.

Just wanna add, you're missing out if you haven't listened to any of OnlyOneOf's songs. This isn't me trying to seem like I'm better for liking a group from a small (and also crappy) company but I'm telling yall, once you listen to their songs (especially libidO, which is my personal fave), you will feel enlightened.

I completely agree with the first one. You know nothing about your idol's relationship. If you are a predebut blink you realise how close girls actually are just by paying a little more attention to their interactions. They genuinely care about each other and that's what real friendship is, not posting selfies together.
