Very hungry canopener bridge defeats fancy, new warning system

In May, the Dept. of Transportation installed a very nice LED blank-out warning sign at the 11foot8 bridge.The new sign is combined with a traffic light that stops traffic when an overheight truck approaches. Yet, when the bridge is hungry, it will eat. Watch as the canopener lures in an unsuspecting moving truck and chews up the roof.

So, driver thinks that the bridge has changed its mind once the lights turn green again. Bridge: “I’ve made you wait long enough, you may pass”
@ih82r8
@ih82r8 3 жыл бұрын
That was my thought too. Red wait a sec, green okay now you can go. As someone else rightly pointed out the sign saying "overheight must turn" implies an "if you are", instead of saying "overheight turn now!" which indicates that a calculation was done. The red/green with the low urgency sign just adds to the driver's own ineptitude of knowing the vehicle he's driving or not paying attention.
@doomse150
@doomse150 3 жыл бұрын
@@ih82r8 Honestly, the sheer fact that the two signs signaling the height of the bridge aren't enough, so that the display is even needed already baffles me. Then considering that a message that lights up when YOU approach is still not clear enough because it doesn't form a complete sentence that specifically adresses you and I think I might have just lost quite a bit of faith in humanity
@stdokuro
@stdokuro 3 жыл бұрын
@@doomse150 The fact that some of the people in this comment section are actually trying to advocate for the truck driver and say they're not at fault makes it worse. It doesn't matter if you're driving a rental truck, you should still be aware of the height of the vehicle you're driving. If you're using a rental why not just ask the company you're renting the vehicle from what the height is if you're not sure what the height is? They likely know the height of their own vehicles. The light only turned green because of the other drivers in low height vehicles passing under. If it was just that truck waiting to go the light would stay red. Keeping it red because of one truck with a bunch of regular vehicles waiting to go would just make everyone stuck, causing a traffic jam. This isn't rocket science, the sign makes it obvious. It doesn't take a genius to simply look at the other vehicles going the same direction and if you don't see any other tall vehicles then the sign is talking to you specifically. The truck driver has nobody to blame but themselves here. This bridge's warning system really fits the meme "That sign won't stop me because I can't read!" perfectly.
@bobosims1848
@bobosims1848 3 жыл бұрын
@@stdokuro Yup, I basically said the same thing in response to another comment: "Shouldn't any legitimate driver really know their vehicle's required clearance? And shouldn't they also at least have passed the drivers' test, and hence be able to read the clearance signs and heed their inherent warning? Really, the overheight warning system shouldn't be required at all!" The sad thing is, that especially the users of rental/lease vehicles don't really give a -shit- poo, because "Hey, why would I care? This isn't my truck!"

We call that a "Höhenkontrolle" or Height Control in Germany. On the other hand, don't they teach you in driver's school to know the dimensions of your vehicle? I know the dimensions of my car well enough to enter and leave the garage at home safely with just a few inches to spare. That truck was what, 12 feet high? I mean, if in doubt, he could've turned and do a detour if he was unsure if he could make the 11'8" max height. I hope the company insurance sent him the bill for the damage.

It's also LED. It could just pop up "Overheight" flashing red once it detects an overheight vehicle, no need for text or any warnings unless that happens. This is a confusing design, especially with green lights right next to it. With something distinguishing the message from the lights it would have been more apparent to a driver that might have a wandering mind due to life/stress/overworked etc. One could argue that's not a state to be in while driving but everyone does it from time to time and we're not getting away from that.

I am guessing the sensor isn’t that accurate at detecting exact height of the truck. As long as anything taller than a minivan, SUV, pickup truck, etc, it’ll probably set off that sensor. So a tour bus would likely have also set it off. It is the truck driver’s own duty to know how height his vehicle is.

Sometimes the low tech solutions seem to be missed here. I thought about that as well, some low hanging, swinging sign they would hit is much more attention grabbing than the mess of blinking lights and signs all over the place. I mean not to take away the blame of the truck driver, he's clearly at fault, but most people don't pay attention to all the signs everyday driving. We tune out most except what we expect to see (lights, stop signs, etc).
@warmowed

Chains and bars are not good solutions on this road because delivery trucks need to regularly make a left turn at the intersection to get to stores/restaurants. This bridge is literally the perfect can opener death trap. Can't change the road, the bridge, or the surroundings, and trucks regularly whip through there at 20 over the speed limit.

Seriously? The video STARTS with 5 seconds zoomed on the warning sign in question, one of each side of the road, written warning in the middle of both lights, a bright red left turn sign and the low part of the bridge in clear yellow. All while the system forces you to be in front of it for half a minute Unless part of the mole people you should get it, don't need to be Shakespeare to understand what the height indicated means, even more if you drive a truck. Anyone that doesn't get it is a public danger that shouldn't drive in the first place.
@georgemartinez932
@georgemartinez932 3 жыл бұрын
My point is unless you actually see the words in the middle turn on, it's easy to assume that sign is just a general warning, not something that was triggered by a sensor. If u add the word detected the meaning of the sign changes from " IF your truck is too tall you must turn" to "your truck IS too tall, you must turn". Not everybody knows the height of their vehicle so it takes the guesswork out.

"Overheight must turn" is not an instruction, it's a general information statement, it must be changed to indicate very specifically that one of the vehicles *currently approaching* is overheight for this bridge and must turn, otherwise the sign is almost useless. Also, maybe it would be useful for truck rental companies to put a sticker on the dashboard indicating the precise height of the truck, it would be pretty difficult for your average person who doesn't drive trucks often to know the height of their moving truck just by looking at it.

In Edmonton we have the infamous High Level bridge with it's 3.0 (10'9") meter clearance. It destroys trucks at least twice a month despite the city putting in an "escape" road turnout just before the bridge. The flaps are perfectly positioned just slightly below to the height of bridges, etc. They are also somewhat heavy, but designed with the intention of not causing damage to the vehicles. So if a vehicle is higher than the bridge, it firsts hits the flaps, making a heavy noise without damaging the vehicle, likely making the driver to stop before disaster. Such a simple and relatively cheap solution. Why hasn't it been implemented here?

In the UK, bridges especially at risk of being struck have a very simple warning system - a message is activated that says 'OVERHEIGHT VEHICLE DIVERT -------------------->' and has four amber lamps that flash, the top pair alternating with the bottom pair. No confusing messages and no idiotic sequence of going to GREEN when a vehicle needs to divert. I would bet money that many truck drivers in the USA who smashed into that bridge were confused by the green light.

+TED BEAMAN are you a fucking moron or just ignorant beyond understanding?? the majority of small moving trucks don't often stand higher than 8 or 9 feet which is why I'm pointing out the obvious that a lot of people don't often pay much attention to how high the truck is and or don't inquire on it. a semi truck and trailer would be a different story.

Such a clear and profound demonstration of "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink." If you've ever given a friend advice just for them to ignore it and be idiotic anyway, watch this video. Watch this video with the grim satisfaction you deserve.

The warning sign is stupid. Maybe I read it wrong because english is not my first language. But if I were to put a sign there that only turns on when an overheight vehicle is detected, I would have something like: "Overheight vehicle detected. You MUST TURN!" "Overheight detected! MUST TURN!" The current sign is way to generic and general. It defeats the purpose of having a detection system in the first place, most of these drivers probably think the sign is always on and flashing. And if you have such a smart detection system put it to full use. Have a generic shutters motor that lowers down some cloth piece (just a few inches of it) behind that collision steelbeam, that has the Message written down on it again. (you have that time since the traffic light turns red when overheight is detected). That will also make the height look even smaller and it will make it impossible for drivers to miss that something out of the ordinary is happening and specifically their vehicle was detected as overheight.

@@christopherjohnston6343 But it's still a bridge, not a door. I've been under really short bridges where companies haven't been bothered to dig it out properly so you have to bend over to get underneath.

At 00:59 there is the problem. If the warning sign is on, then the lights should NOT be green. Maybe they should become left and right arrows instead. I will bet that the drivers see the green and think, "Green means GO!"

The only improvement I can think of is to make the OMT sign blink off and on to catch the driver's attention. He might have thought it was just a normal always-on warning sign.

The warning system has a lot of flaws. First, it should specify "YOU are overheight. YOU must turn." As it is, it seems like a generic sign that could be on all the time. In addition, it would have been cool to have a spotlight shine on the overheight vehicle or to project the warning in red onto the lane of the overheight vehicle. We've had the technology to shine messages on sidewalks for decades now. Lastly, in case the driver still isn't paying attention to any of that, there should be an audible siren, alert or message that sounds warning to the driver that the vehicle is overheight and to turn away.

That sign with "overhight must turn" is just confusing. It just sounds like a general rule and not a warning at all. It should have said "WARNING YOUR WECHICLE IS TO HIGH FOR THE BRIDGE!!! " And blink rapidly or something like that... This reminds me of a even worse sign I did see in Norway saying "Warning, Bussluse" (buss-sluse was what they meant to say in Norwegian as it was trap that wrecked any vehicle less wide then a bus and a pair of tourist ruined there car in it while driving carefully past the sign not even a Norwegian native would understand). Or a sign in Norway that sad "el lock walkport" and would give anyone trying to walk past the fence at wrong place in the wrong way 10.000v electric shock as it was a gate for electric fence.
