Interesting and valuable photos. However the capt ion of the picture showing cars parked outside Lake House is wrong. The photo had been taken either in the late 1950 s or early 1960 s In the 1940s and earlier, the models of cars were much older.

Any other photos of Gail Abayasinghe?.... [In 1971, the then Sri Lankan government in their wisdom, along with some other countries withdrew their candidates from the annual Miss World contest (held in London) because South Africa fielded a 'white' candidate during the ongoing worldwide protests against Apartheid. Leading up to this decision, Gail had been tipped by many to win the title. I first knew about her when The London Evening Standard newspaper published a stunningly pretty picture of her. TV personality Micheal Aspel, who compered many such contests declared, "My Miss World is Miss Sri Lanka!". Alas, it wasn't to be! So, when Sri Lanka was exporting Tea to South Africa, & when a South African pilot flew with the then 'Air Ceylon', we had the audacity to withdraw Gail from the competition & threw away a golden opportunity to promote Sri Lankan tourism for a number of future years. In doing so I reckon that this young woman's human rights were violated in protesting about the horrid mass human rights violations in South Africa. 41 years later I have difficulty accepting what happened then. I also do not subscribe to the idea that the very holding of 'beauty contests' is not 'politically correct'. Humans have developed something called 'intelligence' & 'common sense' over many millennia. Once you apply those traits, one must be able to separate the notions of female beauty from women being considered 'sex objects'.] Gail, in far off 1971, you were denied that glory however fleeting such things are, but you certainly did light up many a young heart...
