We got locked down, but not before the smarter guys had already DEEPLY invested in beer, snacks, and SHENANIGANS. I contributed a large box of chemlights, someone else had a slingshot, and we were shooting them across the quad at other rooms. And that was just to open things up.

I assume it was probably 20+ years ago and the only hurricane I remember being really bad was George. Though it barely touched Florida, but it did hit Louisiana. So my guess is that he's from around there. Edit: Though it could have also been Katrina

Yeah, or one of the surround states (but I also think its florida). I'm guessing its one of the hurricanes that hit Florida between 2004 and 2008 (since they were one of the few ones notable enough to actually hit landfall and to have an for the eye of the storm last long enough for him to take a walk to the local bar...). Anything after that, and well, he probably wouldn't be much of a boomer.

I have a similar story but tornadoes. So being from the Midwest, you get to know when it's _actually_ dangerous vs just bad weather. Well one summer my company was holding their user conference and we had people from our global offices in. Meaning people from the UK were in our office when a BIG storm system hit Chicago. So there we are, in the tallest building in Chicago, which is actively swaying in the wind, and the building security comes on that everyone is to evacuate to the center of the building as a tornado is coming. The UK people are just terrified bc they don't get this type of fun, where as everyone born here grabbed the hidden bottles of "desk whiskey" we all kept and went and sat by the windows to watch the storm come in. Hell of a wall cloud and heavy rain but you could see by the rotation we weren't getting a tornado in downtown. We just had fun, day drinking, and watching the storm from the top of the building.

funnily enough most skyscrapers actually bend and move with the wind.. it's usually too subtle to notice or they put a huge special device that helps with the vibrations and tremors on higher floors.. (known as a tuned mass damper or TMD.) Most skyscrapers can actually over 10 inches or more to the side depending on how tall it is. (the higher the more it bends.) Also if you can actually feel the building moving that is a big sign of trouble.. But not much you can do about it depending on the construction and maintenance of the building.. But a building swaying will wear it down more and more over time, before it will eventually collapse on itself. And even if proper maintenance is maintained, the swaying will actually wear out the foundation pillars deep underground. which is again why they have TMDs and really good designs. The only question is when they will fall. But the swaying will break the building quicker no doubt abou that.. I'm glad though that you know what to do in these situations and can remain calm. although I do wonder what part of the UK those people were from, cause anywhere on the British Isles or mainland has heavy rain storms and massive amounts of wind.. So they either lived or work somewhere very deep inland. (which is expensive land, and not suitable for large businesses or most mass productions.) Or some other UK country I'm forgetting.

i live in a tropical country, and getting stuck at a friend's place during a typhoon while it was supposed to just be a night of drinking were some of the most memorable times in my life. Power's out, wind howling and rain beating down the roof, all that, and i'm stuck there hoping we don't run out of alcohol.
