Where I work we build large vessels and shells are 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick and we don’t have any issues welding anything on it with warping. We even do smaller vessels that are 3/16 steel and no issues with warping. We use T1 dual shield.

I work as a fitter/welder for a company that mainly does pressure vessels and what I will say is that it is much easier and more common to put the root on nozzles and couplings from outside the vessel since we have to back-gouge everything anyway. Saves a lot of time and cuts down on the time you have to spent contorting your body inside. Also for fill/capping heads and larger pipes you'd save yourself time and money in the long run if you get yourself a sub-arc setup. ;)

Agreed.... I wanted to comment about him suggesting to always lay beads from the process side first, but didn't want to rock his boat... My company has been fabricating pressure vessels since the early 70s... Love the trade.... Grandpa passed the company down to father, and when father is ready, I shall be the next one blessed, or cursed, depending how you look at things..... Anyhow, keep on keeping on..... Stay Blessed.....

Some nice welding, I've been fabricating and welding pressure vessels mild steel and stainless for 40 years since I was 16, you can't beat manipulation when you can do it and ye welding with both hands is a must, only thing I don't do is flush the circumferential weld on dished ends before I cap them , I just try leave my run before the cap a little low so I still have the edges of the chamfer to follow, used to be all stick but now all flux cored, still learning at 56 years old and always making jigs, a much underated job is pressure vessel work, keep up the good work I'm going to subscribe 👍

I used to work contract at a heat exchanger company next to 610 and I-10 East....we actually tig welded the inside first, then fluxcored the rest...after filling up, we had to grind it smooth to match the ID of the vessel...the first shift crew always left us the grinding part and the removal of the brace, it was all good though, we took our time doing it too 😁

Should talk about the bracing on vessels and how those nozzles are fit in with tabs not penetrated tacks so they’re easy to cut out, sweet video though and that 3 bead cap is slick

Shops don’t typically use a turn table to roll vessels. They usually use a power roll with one idler and align the rolls. This could be dangerous if your idlers underneath aren’t aligned with the vessel it could actually roll them out.

Nice video. I'm in the pressure vessel industry. Interesting how it is done in Texas. Not a good safety policy to use pallets under your rolls for that amount of weight. Better to use solid wood blocks.

What is the reason for a flux core cap after a mig root? Curious why it isn't all for with mig. Thanks guys
@jamier67424 жыл бұрын
Most customers that procure pressure vessels that involve applications such as power generation, oil & gas, refinery, and chemical industries do not accept GMAW from root to cap.... GMAW S. Cir. Arc.is usually specifically called out as being a process that is prohibited by alot of my customers specifications. FCAW is the way to go for heavy wall fabrications. They are most likely using the GMAW for the root pass because of the fact that FCAW is not intended for open root, and they do not want to back gouge the flux cored wire from the backside.... Perfectly fine.... Deposition rate is unmatched when compared to most processes. (Not including SAW) Hope that helps.....
