@@jahmeer4president._ It actually means Anno Domini, meaning in the year of the lord. If BC is before Christ, then AD is after birth, not after death. So Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, after birth. If it was after death then it would have to be 79 years after 33 AD since Christ died in that year or close to it. BCE and CE are also used, which means "before common era" and "common era." This is a sped up version of what happened but partially accurate. The events took place over a course of 18 hrs. From noon on august 24th 79ad to the 25th at 4 am. It rained rock for most of it, and a pyroclastic flow almost destroyed it, but it stopped just yards from the north gate, the death of the flow would’ve been much quicker and more painless however, than what happened to Pompeii. When the plume of ash fell, which was over 15 miles high at the time, it suffocated the people in Pompeii. They died slowly and painfully rather than quickly, like what happened in a neighboring town, Herculaneum.

@Sly333 we can’t be sure it was 2000 years ago. They thought most people in Ercolano (a nearby city) fled the eruption until the found hundreds of bodies a few years ago in the bay, they were most likely trying to go away by boat
@infinite_simulation668
@infinite_simulation668 Жыл бұрын
That’s not entirely true. The video is not as realistic as it seems, the pyroclastic streams took many hours before they formed. The eruption started many hours before and while it got more and more dangerous, big pieces of pumice fell to the ground. They had fairly time to react, but many people thought it will only be temporary and the bay was also not accessible because of bad wind conditions. Plinius the younger documented this very well.

Almost complete sense of unreality. I don't know if they fully grasped what was bearing down on them, or how fast it was coming. As always, my brain wants to wonder about the very edge of the devastation. What about the people who were ~just~ out of range, or worse, off to the side so the danger swept past them. The best case scenario was to be hit with the wall of death. The rocks, which were actually small and light, were probably the most terrifying. The rocks trapped people into their houses and collapsed the roofs of houses, drowning people in rubble. As dangerous as staying inside was, if a person ran away, not only would they get hit by the small rocks, they would risk being hit by the bigger rocks, which would kill them. Also, the clouds blocked sunlight making it look like night, which probably didn’t help the positivity.

From what I remember, this process actually almost took a whole day or more from start to finish- the eruption began during the morning of the first day and by night, after the ash cloud showers began, people were getting jammed on the roads to escape, others did nothing expecting it to all blow over and then eventually before sunrise in the morning the floes blanketed the towns south east of Vesuvius
