How refreshing to hear the truth. It’s good to hear an experienced dog trainer say so. Vets are vets. Dog trainers train dogs.

Currently working as a vet and a studying to become an APDT qualified dog training instructor - thanks ! I will give my advice. Clients appreciate it. I have a wealth of knowledge from a long time training working gundogs.

Hi Chris, thank you for your comment. Would you have any interest in being a guest on our podcast? To discuss this topic and others? Thanks

@ that’s very kind. Thank you for your invitation. I didn’t know you had a podcast. Please be careful not to dismiss the intelligence of my profession. We understand far more than about canine behaviour and training than you give us credit for.

Charlie will be pleased to hear that our vet, when I asked about behaviour, did not give advice but suggested using a trainer and gave details for a local one that he used for his dogs. So not all vets will give training advice. Another good bit of advice from Mordor.

"My vet said this food is the best" Yeah they definitely don't get a kick back pushing royal canin or some other grain filled shit.
@EdwardCarlileАй бұрын
Was given a bag of puppy Royal Canin so I mixed it with my usual feed to use it up over a few days. It sent all 12 or so dogs crazy! Hyperactive, fights and hard to control. Stopped when it was used up. Do your research and you will find that Mars, Nestle make loads of labels pet food but also own many vets chains which they push their franchise through.

Oh, I love this. It was perfect and you said you’re gonna be having a Vet on soon I can’t wait to hear that and also I truly believe in tittering for vaccines and not just listening to what the vet has to say.

i say this on forums all the time, the majority havn't got a clue about training, and generally the same about canine nutrition ! happy to have them there for any serious ailments though.

Fear free vets are the new thing! Medicating dogs for better behavior! No concern of side effects. More money and returning customers. It’s simply how a vet sees it!

This is so funny, I get this sometimes when people come to buy pups, even had a vet recommend a dog psychologist for a litter I was bringing in for vacs!

Love hear your thoughts on flea treatments and vaccinations potentially causing a rise in cancer in dogs. Also issues relating to hormone deficiencies in dogs possibly caused by castrating dogs.

Ask a vet, he's a trainer :)
@lauralbriarАй бұрын
Have to agree with you - and I've a friend who's husband is a vet. They had an accidental litter while she was in hospital and Hubby the vet was taking care of the dogs - lol. Vets are humans and make mistakes too and any good vet would recommend a trainer rather then pretend to know how to train. Good advice that needs to be heeded - leave the training to a trainer and the medical needs to the vet.

100% correct there. Vets have little to no knowledge re dog training. A vet advised me to castrate my puppy because said puppy was nervous of vets. Thankfully I didn’t listen to her.

Charlie, could you possibly give any more information regarding “male neutering” for the prevention of cancer? My one year old working cocker has a lovely temperament and is un-neutered, however I am feeling a lot of peer pressure of late to have him done. It’s only really my fear of him developing cancer somewhere down the line, making me think that maybe I should? Any advice? 😁👍🏻

He clearly stated he doesn't give medical advice because he's not a vet. Ask your vet :)

Well said Charlie. Couple of years ago, a vet asked me, "will she be having puppies?" when I had my young Staffie in for her vaccinations. This wee dog was given to me, aged 16 months, after the last owner no longer wanted her. They were going to throw her out on the streets. She has a badly undershot jaw and had behavioural problems due to previous abuse. My reply to that vet was "No. She isn't a good example of the breed and has shown aggression towards other dogs. Plus, there are far to many unwanted Staffies in rescues throughout the UK." After 2 seasons, each followed with prolonged phantom pregnancies and an expensive course of cabergoline, I finally had her spayed just after she was 2. It took me longer still to work on her behavioural problems before I finally bought the puppy I had always wanted. Imagine a vet asking if this dog with such poor mouth conformation (undershot by approx 1 inch) AND behavioural problems would be having puppies 😳

Might be a good idea to have more than one/ a panel of vets (if at all feasible - I suppose some could dial in) to broaden the discussion and range of perspectives. Would also allow you to be more ‘pointed’ without unduly skewering one poor practitioner!

My vet asked if I wanted a dog behaviourist’s contact details because my 10 week old Labrador puppy growled a little when she put her hands on his side. No thank you I said he’s a tiny puppy. She said she’d never had a puppy growl at her before. He is a lovely boy, sensitive, sweet, loving and biddable. No ‘dog behaviourist’ needed 😊
@ShamanicSavantАй бұрын
Sounds made up. Puppies growl, they're puppies. Every vet knows that and wouldn't be the least bit concerned by a 10 week old puppy growling.
@amygaines9204Ай бұрын
I think not all vets will offer behaviour advice. Unless they have done a certificate in behaviour, often a vet will advise referral to a behaviourist/dog trainer. I think it unfair to assume that all vets will offer bad advice or that all vets have no knowledge on behaviour. The responsible ones will always offer advice if they have the knowledge but point you in the direction of someone who knows better if they do not.

Charlie where do you stand on having an older bitch spayed. I never have and haven’t had any trouble as yet. Mine keep recommending that my old girl gets done currently 13 and in pretty good nick.
