Jim, you need to look for a mint mark on that V nickel. It is located on the reverse below the dot between united and cents. The 1912 "S" is a VERY key date. I sold one 4 years ago in a G3 grade (not that great of condition for 80 bucks. Good Luck!

@funwithjim

Yes a vibrating tumbler is suitable for a gold coin but I would have a gold coin professionally cleaned and definitely do not use a harsh tumbler or rotary tumbler.

Cool video. I think that there's a solution that you can drop most metals into for cleaning (similar to the stuff used to clean copper and silver except in liquid form instead of paste. )

Great for removing ocean crust from clad coins, besides the clear plastic is now discolored to a smoky dark grey I have no complaints as it clean coins faster than the regular rock tumbler I use.

Hi there great video. I own a ton of silver jewelry that needs polishing asap. Can i use this to clean up my silver jewellery? Im assuming close any necklaces etc then add to drum a 1lb or 1/2 lb of steel shot. Add water so its just about covering the shot and the jewellery items. Then maybe a drop of dish soap? Then set for 10mins on level 3? How does that sound ?
@funwithjim
@funwithjim 2 ай бұрын
I avoid cleaning silver chains unless they are on the larger side, rings without stones are okay to tumble on low settings. This is a jewelry polisher tumbler but many items should be cleaned ultra-sonically.

@funwithjim hi I don't do dainty small all my silver is chunky. And I don't have stones. I wouldn't dare try cleaning a gold diamond ring in there I use ultrasonic for thst. Awesome so will be fine for my chunky silver stuff. So water shot and some dish soap anything else ? . Thanx for replying appreciated

Great video! I have the same tumbler. For your silver pieces, how many pounds of shot do you use? And do you find that using a large amount of water like this works? Others have told me to fill the water about 1 cm above the level of the shot but i don’t know if that’s actually correct. I use mixed media stainless steel shot with a bit of water and dish soap, but all my silver pieces come out with a pitted surface no matter how long i run the tumbler for. Wondering if i need more shot or more water to fix this!
@funwithjim
@funwithjim 8 ай бұрын
I usually just eye ball the amount of media I use leaning a little more than actually need side, water should only be a little over your media line and for silver I only use to remove ocean crust to identify the item other wise I use chemical cleaners and buffing wheel to remove the tarnish. Pitting sometimes happen when out in the ocean and if you tumble to too long it will cause pitting. I suggest not using the tumbler for precious metals unless you are remove the ocean crust to prevent damage to the silver item, chemical cleaners work best combined with polishers.

@@funwithjim gotcha, thanks for the reply! I guess i didn’t specify that I’m a silversmith, so I use the tumbler as part of the final polishing process after soldering, etc., as do many other jewelers. Many jewelers use this vevor tumbler with no pitting issues, so I’m trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. I end up getting pitting in my silver regardless of how long i tumble it, so I’m trying to figure out what to change about my process. I suspect it could be the pins in the mixed media shot that are marring the silver, though without the pine the Hard-to-reach places won’t get polished. Thanks for your input!

Hello Jim, I have been running this tumbler for over a year to clean my clad. Everything has held up great except for belts. Can't speak for anyone but myself, but this thing goes through belts like a mother. Turns out it is a common problem from what I have read. There is a company here in the U.S.A. that sells U.S. manufactured belts with a 15 year shelf life. Bought a 5 pack last month, and do far a MAJOR improvement. Great machine, just have to get away from the O.E.M. belts. Thanks for the video.

how do you recommend cleaning coins on a budget?
@funwithjim
@funwithjim 10 ай бұрын
Really ocean incrusted coins need to be tumbled, some people say to soak in vinegar and salt but that process is really slow and not really budget friendly because you need to change vinegar / salt solution everyday and that will add up. The cheapest way is to soak in olive oil for a few months until you can wipe them clean but that is a long process and wiping one coin at a time is not something I would want to do with the volume I of coins I need to clean. So tumbling them clean is the best process.

😃Impressive. It won't replace my Lortones for rock tumbling. But it looks ideally suited for cleaning detecting finds. The noise is offset by the speed and being able to actually see the tumbling in action. And maybe not worth the electricity, but do you think it can salvage any significant % of partially corroded Zincolns? Thanks Jim.
@funwithjim
@funwithjim 10 ай бұрын
it will remove the corrosion from zinc pennies but it doesn't repair the coin. If the coin is recognizable it can be rolled and marked damaged coins. The US Mint will take them back through your back, I have my Grandson stuff rolls of zinc pennies and then give him the cash from the bank when we cash them in. Then the bank deal directly with the mint. Thank You 👍
