raichu odd no it’s explained in the anime, it’s not cause anime, it’s actually because since they are battle angels they must have a perfect eye view so they are able to see their enemies and fight them, and since they are from Mars, further away from the sun they need bigger eyes and stuff to dilute the light. Also she is a Martian, and in the manga, martians have huge eyes

@@somefrenchweirdo5692 what, do you think when they designed the character they calculated the exact eye dilation needed for the most realistic martian? No they were like anime is neat, let's make it look anime and decided later 'oh it's cuz she's from Mars" edit: y'all I'm not saying it wasnt in the original manga. I meant that they designed the character first in a manga/anime art style, and part of the design included big eyes. They then made a lore reason for the large eyes. I'm just saying that i highly doubt the lore reason came first.

"A shot that looks completely average, and has a disproportionate amount of work put into it." That's called "bumping the lamp," a phrase coined during the production of Who Framed Rodger Rabbit - an actor bumped a lamp so the animators had to spend hundreds more hours dealing with a constantly changing light source. Worth looking up, it's amazing, and would be a very good thing to talk about one episode. Also, RIP Richard Williams.

Next to the whole Alita Mars eyes thing, from a character artist's standpoint. Her being so unique in her design and facial features paired with the top tier animation and fantastic acting made Alita a stranger in this world. She's not a human, not a robot, not a cyborg like the others. She is her own being. And her being so unique with the big googoo eyes actually helps you adjust to that tonal whiplash of her unrealistic proportions next to a normal human, next to a cyborg abomination. I member sitting down with my friend (also artist), I was familiar with the manga with the original OVA and at the end we just sat in the theatre and discussed stuff. And we agreed. Blowing up her eyes, actually helped beating the uncanny valley
@kentslocum

One of the reason’s for that blue light was trying to recreate some of the monochromatic art styles that where in the comic book. Characters who are initially coloured blue while they’re under Dr. Manhattans influence gradually a falling out of it and less of there faces are drawn with a blue filter. Pretty cool that they try and recreate that in the film.

For anyone curious, the reason Dr. Manhattan glows blue is due to something called Cherenkov Radiation. It is easily visible in nuclear reactors with large pools, and it forms because electrons are emmitted during the nuclear reaction at very close to the speed of light, BUT the speed of light in water is way slower than the normal speed of light, so the electrons are travelling through the water faster than light could, and thus release that blue light. It's like the light equivalent of a sonic boom

Even when and where they used CGI, it felt plausible, and where they didn't use CGI, the practical effects and costuming were great. Alita is a Cyborg because she has a human brain. A Robot would be 100% Artificial. That also explains her behaviour, i mean she is just a total derp sometimes xD

I worked on a press junket for this movie. The FX supervisor said there are more cg elements in one Alita's eyes than they had in the entirety of Gollum. Truly amazing work they did at Weta and Park Road Post
