Legally, speaking your face is public domain. It’s kinda the workaround after the San Bernardino incident. The FBI want an easy back door into iPhones but Apple wouldn’t compromise security. Instead, they put in finger and Face ID. If a person is arrested they have the right to remain silent, so they don’t have to tell the police the passcode to their phone. But your face and fingerprints aren’t protected as such. You can remain silent (or be dead), but they can unlock you phone

I was one of the artists on the sopranos job. It was a nightmare. These guys were pretty accurate in their assumptions as to why it looked so weird- yes we had to flip her head horizontally to make it work in some shots and not in others, yes we knew the lighting made no sense. But there was nothing we could do! We were given a bunch of body parts and told to Frankenstein it all together into the final sequence. Please bear in mind it was 20 years ago and the tech has evolved hugely since then, yet even now it is super hard to do. The other artist and I were under 25 at the time and working 16 hours a day for a month. Sorry guys, we tried our best with the tools and materials we were given!

I don't know... the scene at 1:52 looks pretty bad to me. And in most of them he looks like something out of a Quantic Dream video game. The first one they showed is by far the best (despite the shortcomings they pointed out), and it makes sense given the background they also provided. Granted, I also don't know that there's anything better than that, so it was likely a great attempt with what they had to work with.

Fun fact: the cast they had of Peter Cushing came from the film Top Secret, directed by the guys who made Airplane and Naked Gun. The reason they had a cast of his head is because they had a visual gag where he is looking through a magnifying glass and his eye is super big, but when he puts down the glass, his eye still super big because they put a giant eye on his face

I think movie stars need to include in their living will and final directives whether they want their likeness resurrected. We know that studios and some family members will just see dollar signs, but some stars may want their characters to retain continuity in whatever way a director can do it. I think it's reached that level at this point.
@1lucia
@1lucia 2 жыл бұрын
This can of course work, as dark as it might be to ask someone the question if they want to be included if they died. In the case of Paul Walker though it was so unexpected and sudden that they couldn‘t have possibly predicted it. I think in those cases you would need to ask the family and take into consideration what you think the actor would‘ve wanted. Paul Walker loved his role and I am 100% sure he would love what was done with his character. I am sure though that there are other actors that hate their role and wouldn’t want to be „revived“ for a movie

When I saw Rogue One in the theater, I hadn't heard they'd used CGI for Tarkin. I thought they'd found a decent doppelganger and then tried too hard on the makeup or something. Went home and immediately watched A New Hope (because that's what you do after seeing Rogue One the first time) and seeing the real Tarkin again really made it click. Also. Carrie Fisher passed away THE DAY before I saw that movie. So seeing her at the end, in an end sequence which was already spectacular, sent me over the top emotionally.

RE: CGI Tarkin Quite apart from the achievements and / or failings of the digital rendering, and despite all the lengths the artists went to to assure they had as photo-realistic likeness as they could get; they fell flat by the omission of one of the single most distinctive "human" touches Peter Cushing was known for - the finger raised for emphasis. Look at any film where Cushing is playing an authority or emphatically making a point and you will find it - that finger visually punctuating his words. From Dracula to Frankenstein to the original Star Wars itself (hell, even the animators of the cartoon series used it!); you could make a drinking game out of how many times he wagged that finger in the air - and yet it was so glaringly, painfully missing from CGI Tarkin. In fact, in most of his scenes, his hands are resolutely immobile or clasped behind his back. I was seriously disappointed that so familiar a Cushing trademark had been neglected.
@blofeld39
@blofeld39 2 жыл бұрын
Guy Henry gives a very somnolent performance compared to what Peter Cushing would give. And then the animators tried to bring it close to Cushing facially, which creates a disconnect between the voice and the face.

@chindleymuffin 3 жыл бұрын
@@JackFlashTech It was the second movie, they didn't get Glover back for the sequel for some reason (if I recall correctly, there was a dispute about Glover wanting more money) and so they decided to get another actor in, with prosthetics to make him look like Glover. No CG was used back in 1989 (the technology just wasn't advanced enough), they used a special motion control camera rig (with special film stock too) to film each character separately and then optically lined up all the shots in post production. Nowadays it would all be done with digital compositing. There was no law at the time to say that you couldn't use an actor's likeness without permission, but due to Glover suing Zemeckis and Universal (the court case in which he won), there is now a clause in the Screen Actors Guild rules saying you have to seek written permission to use an actor's likeness, even if they are dead.

Part of what killed Cushing/Tarkin's CG believable nature was the constant small motions they had his head make - they were so numerous and so sharply executed, almost staccato to use a musical term (kind of stop-motion-like or slideshow like; very jerky) that it was just obviously not any way that a person would naturally move. If they cut the little head movements in half or even just took 1/3 of them out and made the motion a little smoother, it would have been far more convincing. People don't move like a puppet with a DC Step Motor controlling them; there's motion build-up and inertia that keeps you moving slightly when you try to stop, and they flubbed those aspects completely. tl;dr: CG Tarkin lacked fluidity in his movements and made too many of them to begin with, and they didn't follow basic physics.

Sopranos had Nancy Marchand unexpectedly die, so they used existing footage and applied it to a body double. This was season 2, I believe, so it was done over 20 years ago. In the case of the horizontal flip, it was probably the only footage they were provided that made the lateral movement they needed, but in the wrong direction. They then pursued a bad idea to completion to solve the problem. But it might have been the only thing they could do with available tools and budget. Also maybe they didn't know enough to know everything that is possible. It is substandard, but you've got a crew that does basically no visual effects, having to scramble and figure out a solution during a time when these effects were still very expensive. I think it's a big case of the talents of the team being incompatible with the solution of digital effects.

In the sopranos scene the actress playing Olivia passed away very unexpectedly days before filming started for the season. Which quickly became a writing nightmare since she was such a big part of the story. If you watch the season she doesn't appear or is mentioned in the first episode of the season because they had to buy time for this scene of her to be made, which appears in the second episode. The reason why it looks so bad is because 1 they were rushed, but also because all of the head shots were from previous scenes in the previous seasons, which all had different lighting and shot from different angles. Also if you watch the scene the dialogue is very strange too because they had to write it so the things that she said in the shots made sense for the conversation. They did the best they could with what they had. But man it looks bad.

I am just now getting around to watching the Sopranos and had a really strange hunch that the actress had died when first viewing the scene. It was so strange to be able to predict her character's death minutes before it happened because of VFX. Didn't put the pieces together until I went to the actress's wikipedia page and saw how they had to write the story around her death. Felt like something I could only experience by binging a 20-year-old show lol

Its in a way like replicating art and putting your name under it. Its still a copy and in a way impersonation/identity theft. Because it is also really easy to use deep fale to destroy reputations, so yeah people should have the rights to their likeness and the estates of late actors should be considerate towards what the actor would have wanted and not just cashing the paycheck. For example Peter Cushing loved working on Star Wars and would have been fine but the liquor ad with Bruce Lee seems like a big stretch that he would have been okay with that

His judgment is just and warranted because of evil in this world, but He provided a way of redemption for us through the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for us on the cross. God is patient with mankind. Yeah, it's like someone taking a picture of you and uploading it without your consent. It's your likeness and you should be able to have control over what happens with it.
@moondust2365
@moondust2365 3 жыл бұрын
@@AcoskyFilms True? But I also think it should be like copyright but not exactly. You have all say on what happens to pictures of you and digital models of you while you're alive, and can specify what can and can't be on to your body (along with what the law already says can and can't be done to your body). After you die, your children or your grandchildren own the copyright to pictures for a few decades, plus some rights on digital models. After that, you should be public domain. There'd still be laws preventing some things, but for the most part, 10-60 years after you die, the only thing your family should have control over is your assets, your successors, and your body.

Not sure if this was mentioned anywhere in the comments, but Peter Cushing's head-cast was created during production of the movie "Top Secret!" - they casted his head so they could give him an enlarged-eye prosthetic for a scene in the movie. Very funny movie, definitely worth a watch.

I've been worried about that. Black Panther's battles looked off to me for the longest, and I never knew it was because the majority were heavily CGI. I'm also worried about getting his coloring right. A lot of artists don't quite nail the various hues in darker skin tones. Then again, they'll be having the best of the best working on the movie; I would assume the technology will be more advanced by the time the movie releases. I'm curious as to what you all think about it.
