I wrote code back in the 70’s and 80’s. (0:44) it wasn’t “Tron” for electronic, Tron was a command code “Tron/Troff” stood for “Tron” Tracer-on, and “Troff” Tracer-off. Which back at that time (80’s when the movie was made), most code was written in some variant of basic for “high level” user code. When you ran a program it would stream the code on the screen as it ran, to show you what was going on when your system crashed due to whatever bugs was accidentally written in, so you could determine where the bad line of code was when it crashed. It was a debugging feature. In the movie Tron’s function was, to monitor what was going on and shut down any unauthorized activity (Allen’s program) which would and did take down the MCP which was hijacking the “System” which is why Tron was represented as a “warrior”, it’s sole purpose was tracking and taking down rogue code. Then think about how the first Tron was mainly functional, with little entertainment, and how the new one showed an evolved world with higher specs (processing, memory, etc) and more recreational functions, similar to how computing has evolved IRL... And another thing I liked about the original Tron was how the characters in the real life parts have counterparts from the grid, who are played by the same actors. Tron: Legacy was the first time I successfully saw 3D in a movie. Anaglyph(red/blue) doesn't work on me, and my mind just quickly cycles between the red and blue images, slowly enough to be noticeable which one it's focusing on, but fast enough to be headache inducing. My partner at the time extolled how good clear glasses 3D was and convinced me to see Tron: Legacy in 3D. ...I actually, legitimately cried, several times, throughout the film because of how beautiful this digital world I felt I was _in_ was. I leaned away in shock at the screen coming towards me, flinched when the disc flew at me, then tried to reach up and grab it. Attempted to touch multiple things and apparently spent the film with an expression of pure wonder. I remember nothing but the crying(because it impeded my vision), and had to be told about it later, by my partner who had spent as much of the time in the cinema watching the movie as watching my reactions to it because apparently... Guy who has little to no depth perception in real life, cannot see more primitive forms of 3D, and is now experiencing _proper depth_ for the first time in his memory is an enjoyable thing to watch.

One more thing about Tron Legacy: when it came out in IMAX 3D cinemas, the "real life" scenes were screened in 2D letterbox, then when you got into the "Tron world" the IMAX screen would be used fully and go 3D. "TRON" is actually a key concept of the film - it's a debugging command that was used in many dialects of BASIC that is the mnemonic for "TRace ON". When TRON is flagged the terminal prints the current line number being executed onscreen (or on paper if printing). This is a bit of an easter egg to the computer geeks watching the movie as the TRON character is "debugging" the MCP. TRON also has a mirror command "TROFF" - which sets the TRON flag off when done debugging.

Sadly, we now live in the age of shitty story writing and shitty movie making, so they will screw this one up horribly I'm afraid. Movie makers just don't get trained properly anymore. They are employed on studios that just tell them one thing "it has to make as much as Avengers, make it produce 3 billion bucks!" They just pour a lot of money on it, but never talent, never skill and of course, never anything original, because that would be a risk. I'm sure they won't use the original cast, the won't care about the original story, but do something completely different ;-) *ARGHHH* They make movies today to make as much money as possible, not to make a piece of art, like it used to. That only focus on money destroys everything.

Unpopular opinion, Tron: Legacy was a good movie Edit: Since this comment somehow managed to get popular so quickly and since there are a lot of replies, let me clarify that I'm talking about how Legacy wasn't exactly a box office bomb, but had a sequel get cancelled because the writers and Disney suits see that other similar films (an example being Tommorowland and maybe, yes I know its a stretch but maybe the new Star Trek Movies that had a similar style) did poorly. Having invested like 200 million into Legacy, Disney didn't want to follow us Tommorowland with a similar move that would cost more and do worse I highly hope that they make a sequel that does the franchise justice, and one that is a visual masterpiece way ahead of its time like both other Tron movies were and are. The "digitalization" part in Tron Legacy seems very unspectacular if you watch it here, but the gimmick was, that you had to watch it in 3D. Every scene in the real world was 2D and the effects were only applied in the digital world. They even had a info at the start of the movie to keep the glasses on all the time and that it's all intended. So, in this short switch from real to digital world, you suddenly had a really hard cut from a plane picture to the depth of a 3D movie and it worked pretty well!

0:50 TRON was not because of "elec-TRON-ic." TRON is actually a computer intruction: TRace ON. It was meant to reveal what was happening within the computer system as the program code was running. From TRON to the end of that function, the screen would show things like registers, variables, etc. To end that function, a programmer would issue TROFF. So, Tron could be meant to reveal anything in the system which was happening that shouldn't. After speaking with Flynn (because he triggered a system alert by trying to hack into "The System"), Alan engaged Tron to find out what was happening and to fight the big "MCP" (Master Control Program - the main villain of the movie). Also, Jeff Bridges' "program" in the beginning of the original Tron Movie was named, CLU. So, he was attempting to reveal "clues" as to who the actual programmer was for the games that Dilinger took credit for (and made all kinds of money)... even though it was Flynn who programmed them. Also, the Tron game cited was one of two which came out after the movie. The classic four-game arcade and Tron Disc. Plus the actors said that they never appreciated color more than when they left the studio after a day of shooting... since everything on the sets was black-and-white. They said the night lights and displays were overwhelming :-)

In the original TRON, when they escape the prison, everything seems glitchy, with bursts of light. According to the extra features on the DVD, this is because the photographic paper they used for the manual cutting and compositing, was supposed to be used in sequential packs (to compensate for slight variations in the batch as its manufactured) - but they'd just randomly grabbed packs out of storage without knowing that. Fortunately, that was the first scene they'd worked on, so it was noticed, and was in a position where they could explain the mistake as glitches.

@vladimiradidas19454 жыл бұрын
@@duncanwade1026 pretty much yeah. Back then, they only gave out awards to practical effects because it was more impressive to do back in those days, even when computers were starting to learn how to do effects. That's why if you go search up past academy winners for vfx, a good chunk was done practically. It wasn't until Toy Story came out where they finally decided computer effects was considered Oscar worthy.. I'd highly recommend Burger Fiction's video to see where I'm coming from.
@jp38134 жыл бұрын
@@vladimiradidas1945 Toy Story (1995) wasn't nominated likely b/c it was classified as animation (though The Nightmare Before Christmas somehow was). Award winners during the 90s were Total Recall, Terminator 2, Death Becomes Her, Jurassic Park, Forrest Gump, Babe, Independence Day, Titanic, What Dreams May Come, & The Matrix. It's more that CGI in movies increased rather than the Academy not considering them.

Showing my age here but the command TRON was an early debugging term, short for TRace ON. Cool video though guys, really love these films, and enjoyed your explanations of the practical effects.

TROFF. the movie. when?
@philipmiesbauer4 жыл бұрын
While true, it is a common misconception that the name TRON is based on that. It's been stated publicly that the creators of the movie were unaware of the TRON command until audiences pointed it out. But I usually tell the story of that misconception as well. Love Tron. Really hope they make another. Don't stop believing.

@@philipmiesbauer Huh, what a coincidence with the motorcycle traces :D
@philipmiesbauer4 жыл бұрын
@@ringoftorment Yes, and even more coincidental is that the TRON command was used for recording debugging information about other programs, i.e monitor their behaviour, and that is literally also what Tron was designed for in the movie, to monitor the MCP, Master Control Program. Probably the reason why it's such a common misconception and an even better story about misconceptions... Oh, I wanna watch them both now again....

Funny about 1982: Both TRON and Blade Runner were released then. TRON was the first movie to us CGI and Blade Runner was all done 'Thru the Lens' effects. I find it amazing how both these fantastic films have huge followings after having both sucked in the Box Office sense of films. Yeah, VHS/DVD had made a massive impact for this. Granted, Blade Runner had 5 different variants available. Love BOTH these movies for totally different reasons, yet loved their respective visuals. Thanks for posting this video. Take care, Mark.

@Lougehrig103 жыл бұрын
Something that always is failed to mention is the fact that Legacy came out right when the 3D craze was happening. IMO Avatar and Legacy are the 2 movies that really took advantage of this tech. Most other movies just throw it in as an afterthought, but Legacy and Avatar both feel like the directors wanted 3D the entire time, and certain scenes *really* benefit from it. Considering also that both Trons really focused on pushing CGI to their limits at the time, makes this really impressive.

So debugging the MCU made as much sense as elecTRONic did. This movie gave me a whole new perspective on what goes on inside of a computer. Dozens of programs that looked like me running around inside the CPU doing different tasks, lol...

as a programmer and animator working in the 80s.. if memory serves.. In basic one can output a trace thread.. you turn it on with the TRON command.. 'tracer on'.. and of course to turn it off you input TROFF. The connection is that the basic TRON command is for debugging. :P The character Tron was the 'protector' of the system.

I'm gonna disagree with Sam and Niko on this one, I think the look of Tron Legacy is just about perfect. I totally understand what you're saying about the raw, hand-crafted feel and the very hardware-oriented art direction, but Tron had to change its aesthetic because the aesthetics of computers themselves have changed. When you buy top of the line hardware now you don't get a gray block, an exposed circuit board, or anything resembling the original Tron aesthetic. What do you get? Sleek, black, LED, etc. Not to mention that the focus of computers has radically shifted from being about impressive hardware making things possible, to innovative software making things possible. All that said, I think Tron Legacy really captures the evolution of what computers are in the public consciousness compared to its 1982 predecessor.
