For the price of an original 2600 you could buy ... about 17 Behringer 2600 standard models or maybe 14 of their Blue Marvin/Gray Meanie versions. I think you could get a pretty powerful/raw sound out of that! I've always wanted a 2600 (and an Odyssey, and a Solina, and ...). I was much more into the ARP line of synths than Moog's. I've got two ARP Axxes and their sequencer, all of which need refurbishing. Even the lowly Axxe sounds amazing, but if you're going into vintage gear you've got to really have some $$ to keep them running. Even then you've got to be able to find someone who knows what they're doing (surprisingly not very easy to find locally). The Behringer 2600 is perfectly capable of doing great things. I'm sure the Korg 2600 mini will too. Also, don't forget there's also the Antonus 2600 too. They also make the Antonus Step Brother, a cool blend of the ARP sequencer and Little Brother.

I got to see and play an original ARP 2600, once, think it was the later grey meanie version, the keyboard was not connected but somehow I got it to self-oscillate, then the magic appeared, the guitar guys working the store were wondering how the heck I got it to work w/out the keyboard, it was a magnificent vintage machine, w/that magnificent vintage price tag and also realizing I would have no way to know if all the components worked properly and if they did not, to have one repaired costs vintage repair prices, if you can even find someone who can properly repair such an instrument. Been looking at many synths, have had many synths, this Behringer tribute seems to be the one I'm looking for, don't care if it's musical, just want to visit outer space; great video, thanks so much.

Have subscribed. :) One thing I noticed, on the bass patches, the attack on the behringer sounds a bit 'clicky' almost like a digital sample being cutoff, that sort of sound. Your original ARP 2600 even when set snappily showed no such behaviour. On the Behringer do you think this can be avoided just with a ever so slightly slower attack time? From your video I certainly do prefer the sound of the original, but I agree with your conclusion, for most people most budgets the original isn't worth the current asking prices if you don't already have one. I was given a Roland Jupiter 4 many years ago, with minor issues, and another Jupiter 4 which was ok electronically but physically damaged, so quite easily a good unit could be made from the two. Would I buy one for their current price? No, at least not for me.

Thanks a lot for watching and for your support. Play around with the Time Factor switches of the ADSR/AR section. Various settings may reduce the "perceived" click sound. Classic Synths ultimately require more or less intensive maintenance work and this can be pretty costly. One should always bear this in mind before buying a vintage Synth. Greetings, Ralph

I like the original a bit more too. It just seems thicker and the filters are more musical or interesting. Maybe there’s more harmonic content or something , hard to describe. It’s more present, upfront, and more aggressive. Also yes it’s a little more analog sounding , organic is a good word for it. It sounds more vintage I think, where the behringer sounds more modern. And really some tracks I may actually prefer the behringer depending on the sonic landscape. That said I love the behringer too (never thought I’d say that lol) and will be buying one in the future. To be able to have something that sounds so good and capable for so cheap is just amazing. I think they did a fantastic job on the b2600.

I remember a video with the main engineer who designed the Behringer clone and he said he “improved” the circuit, such as making it more stable for one, which was a mistake in my opinion. Unstable vcos are what make vintage synths sound organic and fat.

And this is what it comes down to for most people and especially, most artists that just want to make music; the astronomically priced (before adding any servicing) originals with the original sound and VS the affordable and practical (MIDI) brand new, clones/copies/re-issues/whatever with a sound that is close, but not exactly there. Unless you have a money tree in your backyard or are a successful artist/film score person etc, you ain't going to spend 10grand on an old 2600.

In the big picture, few will notice much difference and it's hard to justify the cost based on that alone. Had I not acquired my analog gear back when it was dirt cheap I wouldn't own any now. I had two 2600s. One I paid $250 along with Tascam cassette 4-track. The second was $500 at a university sale. Still own one but haven't touched it since getting into eurorack.

TB-303 and TR-606 for $60 and $40. Blue SH-101 for $200. TR-808 $450. So many amazing deals. Still have all of these except one of the JP-6s. Both 2600s needed some work which was done by Phil Cirocco of CMS who lived in my town. Both had the nice gray panel. I kept the older one with the Moog-style filter.

I believe your 2600 is in much better shape than mine ;-) You were pretty lucky that Phil Cirocco was living in your town. I was also lucky that and old friend gave me some gear for free, because he was buying a Korg Kronus and just wanted to get rid off his old bulky gear ;-) Over the years I was always asking him whether he wanted to have it back, but he told me that he had all the sounds he needed in his Korg workstation. I totally agree..the ARP 2600 has a unique 'flavour' and the presence of a spring reverb tank adds a richness to the sound. I love it. But for a pleb like me I think I am stuck choosing a Behringer 2600 or Korg M - both immensely great bang for the buck I have to say and gets you in the 'ballpark" I guess. Behringer has been the centre of a great deal of controversy of late but they just keep bringing the classics back to people ..legends of synthesis, that don't sound half bad. I'm kind of glad they do this regardless of the moral peril involved LOL Korg has been killing it too...they have been innovating new offerings along with the Korg mini 700S and the ARPs of old. Their quality is excellent. Thanks ever so much for your vidies- I very much enjoy them! I am now sub'd.

Honest. Very nice and fair comparison. Thanks. I do not have a vintage unit though I have wanted one for years. I cannot justify $4000 US for the full size Korg reissue. Nor can I spend $2500 on the soon to be released mini Korg unit. So for $600 I can get a reasonable 2600 clone that I can play. Yep, it's not a vintage 2600, but I am OK with "close".

The original sounds way better to me but that's no surprise. Every new analog synth I get is just too bright, especially in the high notes. I absolutely LOVE the size and feel of the original. You see it from across the room and immediately want to go to it. I'm not drawn to a rack module. That being said, I'll admit this is the best bang for your buck Behringer.

Excellent. Thanks for posting this. I was listening without watching so I couldn't see when you switched synths. The only part where I thought there was a significant difference was the reverb. I owned a Great British Spring for many years and there's a way that spring reverbs "load-up" that digital modeling never captures IMO. Having said that, if I do get a B2600, I could easily put together a spring reverb if I felt I needed that sound.

The tell-tale way to check the 4012 filter is to FM it at audio rate to get the formant "ooh-wow" - it's hardwired to osc2 already. Simply a) switch osc2 to audio rate, b) raise filter resonance into self-oscillation c) increase the third mod slider of the filter in conjunction with osc and filter tuning and you're there. There's only so much that squirting around with an EG can tell...but FM is vast. And that upper-midrange 'click' on the BARP (heard @7:30 -8:00) would drive me nuts. This is because the real 2600 always slews response at the attack stage. Further, the 4012 can get into Buchla territory because of this slew 'slop' - it behaves a bit drunkedly like a vactrol when 'pinged'. And so heavenly wood-block and mallet timbres await thee.

I really don't think the price is unreasonable considdered these are not "just" virtual analog reissues. It is "Real" analog circuitries. There is propably not very many that are willing and/or able to pay 10-20k for the refurbished originals, but 2-3k for a really good reissue is still within the grasp of a person not made completely of money. And I think its interesting to see the trends of many old analog synths being reissued with more modern analog circuits. I agree that I also think paying 2-5000 $ for some of these reissued analog synths is a tad too much compared to how narrow their use is and how much more you get with a well constructed "virtual" analog remake no matter if its eg a Kronos or a computer based system. But if Analog sound is your thing primarily I think you get pretty close to the originals at a much more afordable price and less headacke about it breaking down on you. I'm just waiting on Yamaha to reissue the CS-80 in a lighter weight version :)

KARP2600 for under $2K is an absolute steal...the closest to a proper time machine synth as any massed-produced synth today or at any other time. I paid $3K for my '71 Tonus 2600 about a dozen yrs ago, and another $1500-$2K in maintenance+mods. And _that_ was well worth every penny/minute of trouble. A new one for under $2K is just bonkers. my 2600 economy goes: One KARP is worth 10 BARP. Two KARP is worth one o.g. 2601. And the G(ray)-Clef 2600 is worth three KARP. A pre-G-clef (Tonus-logo) is priceless, with no substitute but for making the jump to the 2500.

I have 1x 2600 and now I am happier than ever before. All the little improvements Behringer did where great decisions. Okay someone whished 2 x asdr but more features does not always make better sound, mostly more features let you go more far away from the original to a more Moderne sound, but that was not what you really want! IMO a Clone should be a good copy of the original with maybe slight improvements to keep it regonizable. I Like your Videos very much, very good speaker and keep it up, you are on the right way! Allegedly they were too expensive for mass serial production. Hi Ralph. As always, you provide a high quality video with an excellent comparison of the two machines. Unfortunately, I was not in a position to buy a 2600 in the 80s, or more especially a Synthi/VCS3. I saw a video interview a couple of years ago where Daniel Miller told how he paid 300 UK pounds for a Synthi 100 from the University of East Anglia (in my home town!) - I nearly cried. I would not pay $10000 now for an original 2600, partly way more than I could justify, and also concerns about the wear and tear/maintenance. So, given my choice between no 2600, and the B2600, which, as you have demonstrated, comes close to an original with appropriate patching, I will choose to get a B2600, especially since they announced the Blue Marvin and Grey Meanie versions. The new Korg mini 2600 looks interesting, but still is nearly three times the price of the B2600. Given the lack of availability of the B2600 now, I expect there will be plenty of comparison videos before I need to choose. Apologies for the very long ramble, and thank you for your great content.

I am currently experiencing some problems with the Voltage Processor of my original ARP2600. Luckily I can use the Voltage Processor of the B2600 as some kind of an external module for the ARP2600. ..reverbs are my favorite effects sounds but I dislike spring reverbs especially ones that sound unnatural. I am very picky about reverb because I use a lot of it on all tracks.. most of the time each individual track has it's own high end reverb.. if you like real spring reverb then just add your own.. it's a no-brainer.. will buy the Behringer 2600.. if anyone is debating it.. watching old gear dying is not enjoyable unless you can repair it yourself..

Great Review Videos! I have a friend who owns a vintage 2600 that is in great need of repair. The vintage model has many issue including components incased in epoxy which are next to impossible to repair plus. I own 2 highly sought after vintage synths that require constant repair it seems. So happy to see these wonderful synths revitalized and faithfully reproduced as new units. I visited Syntaur earlier this year and got to see and hear the Korg release of the Arp 2600. I believe the B2600 is a great starting point for anyone before considering the way more expensive full size version. Especially if you are new to analog synthesis. Great learning tool. In fact my friend's vintage ARP 2600 came from a school where he taught.

There is (almost) no 'exactly' with regards to ~50-yr old synths, either. The tolerances of old components were vast. This was mitigated by calibration at the factory, but over time things drift and degrade. Unless you know a tech that can calibrate against original reference material it's a shot in the dark knowing what a 2600 is 'supposed to sound like' all by itself (and not guessing vs a recording).

@@shaft9000 When it comes to analog synths, perhaps it’s just my poor ear, but I believe that with setting the controls appropriately, you can make one synth sound like virtually any other assuming similar components (number and type of oscillators, filters, etc.). Software emulations are now getting so good that in a blind “taste test” I’m pretty sure that you wouldn’t be able to distinguish it from hardware. Additionally, software makes a number of things possible that hardware just can’t do. If you look at the actual architecture, many high end synths since the mid-2000s are just special purpose computers.

Some points: The ARP in this video has way less bass and almost as if a high pass filter has been added. Is the machine in spec as I do not recall my original ARP having such less bass. But that is from memory as I sold it many years ago. The Behringer rips it to pieces in the low end. Adjust the EQ and cut off the lower end and the Behring sound a lot more similar to the Original here but not exactly. I would be curious how the original compares against the new Korg reissue though. Second point the Meanie versions have an actual "real" spring reverb and are not much more expensive than the basic Behringer model. Not sure though how well they compare on the reverbs though. The bass differences though are pretty noticeable on a decent system.

And this is overall package is compared to a new clone. People can decide for themselves. BTW, I patched the (same) sounds by ear. I did not use an oscilloscope.

As I mentioned I do not recall my OG Arp I used to own being so anemic on bass. You can not compare something that is likely out of spec and think it is a valid test. In what world does that even come close to valid? That is like saying my 2006 Porsche 911 setup for racing is better than the new one because I like how smooth it rides, well ignoring the fact the coil overs had been broken for 20 years. I appreciate the effort you took to do the videos and I am not trying to attack you, but just rather point out the obvious errors here. Do I miss the OG Arp (hell yes), would I buy another again? Likely not as todays vintage stuff has gone insane in prices and in many cases the re-issues are better.

It could also be that the video and audio compression has an impact. My ARP is one of the later models of around 1978. I am not trying to make a scientific comparison but just to showcase the old and new alongside each other. And I personally believe it's justified to compare an old Porsche to a new one. I personally prefer manual transmission therefore I guess I am subconsciously biased against automatic transmission 😉

I have to say, I actually preferred the sound of the Behrenger. The filter was dramatically better, with a much better and more musical response. And I preferred the Behrenger reverb as well, which is a much more versatile effect that goes from subtle to dramatic, whereas the spring reverb is much less effective. The other additions and improvements in reliability, size, features, MIDI and, of course, cost all also favor the Behrenger. As a collectible item, the ARP might be better, but as an instrument, the Behrenger is a clear winner.

Is that less of a problem when it is sliders and not knobs?

@@geoffk777 Unfortunately that one has some unnecessary extras that drives up the price for me (and I already have the Poly D). I don't need another keyboard, a rack version would be great. I also think the 4 oscillators AND Juno Chorus is total overkill. All I hear is demos where, if put into a mix, it sounds totally muddy. The Minimoog can already be problematic in many cases in a mix. I have other Synths that do the pads and/or sounds with great chorus on them (wiithout the Moog already wide/fat soudning VCO:s). I mean listen to, the otherwize great, MrFirechild demo of it. Yes, I can see that it still great value for money for some people who don't have access to Polysounds in the Juno (but not really still) vain. Or have something that sounds really impressive alone on its own. I mean, a Minimoog (with keyboard) for that price (without the extras) is something that would have been someting to almost kill for, before Behringer started their mission of releasing cheap versions of vintage gear in, what was it, 2018?

Yep. Appalling. Just turn it off. Always. My friend has an original Arp 2600 and we NEVER use it's spring reverb. There are a glut of amazing reverbs available elsewhere, just use one of them and enjoy the 3 oscillators of the Barp 2600 at it's amazing price :)

Hello My freind Ralph. Good video and Good to hear the comparisons. I think the digital reverb tends to muddy the sound somewhat, to the piont where the sound gets lost if you add over the half way piont on the sliders. The Spring reverb of your original is has far less of a tail off so doesn't muddy the overall tone. I noticed Behringer are to release 2 other variants, Blue Marvin and the Grey Meanie. Basically they have added a physical Spring reverb to them. I would like the Grey Meanie, do you know if any stores in Europe will be getting supplied any?? I'm in the UK and can't even get hold of the first batch...Behringer hasn't yet supplied any UK retailers. So I don't want to miss out on the Grey Meanie.

Hello! And thank you for watching and sharing your opinion. According to my knowledge Behringer not only added a Spring Reverb but also improved on some components of the Blue Marvin and Gray Meanie. According to my research the Blue Marvin and Gray Meanie had top notch component built into them back in 1971. But they were too costly for a mass serial production. So if Behringer is staying close to the original 1971 design that sounds very interesting. So far I have not seen any information on when the Blue Marvin and the Gray Meanie become available for (pre) order. Greetings from Germany

Ever have any problems with the USB on your soundcraft mixer? I’ve had two fail on me.

No, I never had any issues with the USB. But the USB socket on the mixer doesn't appear to be very solid and feels a bit shaky once a USB cable is inserted. Therefore I try to avoid any additional physical strain on the socket/cable.
