I too am a Dave and I was born in 1964. Jonny Quest will always be my jam. Although between this, Gentle Ben and Flipper and the Popular Science and Popular Mechanics magazines my dad got, I was convinced the future would be far cooler. But you gotta give em props for VTOL aircraft.

And NONE of those kids playing that theme were even alive when "Jonny Quest" first aired on ABC back in the early 1960s! Heck, some of their PARENTS might not have been alive, either! LOL. Nice job by the band!

10/10 No other big bands have ever taken the time to perform a rendition of this extremely difficult piece of music. Mr Hoyte Curtin would be proud of these young guys to have given there best shot of his master piece. 🎵🎵🎵🎵
@nortoncomando3728 Жыл бұрын
Fred I am happy you posted the fact that this tune is Extremely difficult for even experienced musicians. I listened to a documentary where they discussed the professional studio musicians whom were considered Elite could not actually follow the sheet music to the very end. The trombone players actually messed up on the recording used in cartoon. They said it was exhausting and you had to have a strong set of lungs to keep up with Hoyte Curtin directions. So hats off to the Vicksburg HS band and You Are 100% correct Hote Curtin wpuld be proud of these guys And If I don’t mind saying.. Happy we all still remember his work and consider this piece.. A masterpiece

10 SOLID GOLD STARS FOR THE "RED JAZZ BAND" ABSOLUTELY OUT OF THIS UNIVERSE!!!!!!!
@koomo8014 жыл бұрын
Hoyt Curtin was ribbed by the brass section that the original composition was too simple. He ended up modifying it to the point where the professionals working with him could just barely play it and that became the theme we all know and love. So, well done, VHS band!
@Nclght2 жыл бұрын
Actually , the professional trombone players couldn't play all the notes as written due to speed and distance of the slide requirements.🤣

Not too many high school age drummers can play swing that fast these days… dotted eighth notes on ride cymbal and hi-hat virtually the whole time, and fills dominated by triplets demand mastery of alternating stick technique. When I was that age, I could play paradiddles so fast it sounded like a roll … as long as I started it with my right hand … make me start with my left, and I almost couldn’t do it, and on improv fills, I avoided triplets like they were poison. One of the many handicaps of being self-taught … I guess if it weren’t for ZZ Top and “La Grange”, I never would have done the necessary work to get past that. My hat’s off to this young man.

I loved this cartoon as well, as it was so different than the others. I even bought a bootleg of the cartoon I was so desperate to watch it again. Now they have it on DVD. Loved the music too. Gave those trombones a run for the money. The band did a great job playing this difficult piece. Hoyt Curtin was a brilliant prolific composer! I think this is one of his best works.

Did they change the rythym? others have.. They all had strings sections, which, in my opinion RUINS it, it makers it DRAG. That music was NOT written for STRING SECTIONS! It was written for a JAZZ BAND! For a HS band, VHS did better than the other ones (comparatively speaking).
@donowens78724 жыл бұрын
100% agree! Strings ruin it. THE REAL ADVENTURES OF JONNY QUEST absolutely decimated this extraordinary composition - and the show sucks to boot!

Trombones, primarily. Hoyt Curtain composed and conducted the original. The trombonists had ben complaining about how little they had to do, so Curtain threw this at them.

Sorry, but "Church Goes Jazz" played it at an even slower tempo than this group. Every challenging jazz piece gets much easier when you slow it down enough. Having said that, however, I think both groups did a really good job with this song. It was hard to play even for the professional studio band that recorded it for the original show!
