A brilliant song, a great interpretation of it by Donovan. Buffy Ste Marie's is better in my opinion as she gets the interpretation right obviously. We're all to blame, we all help cause it and help pay for it, and all wars are in our name. This song needs thinking about, Buffy is always brilliant with her lyrics. A lovely pipe dream. The universal soldier wouldn't need to exist if human nature was incapable of mere disagreements. All conflict is about feelings and since feelings won't disappear so too won't conflict. This guy is describing a world which will never exist. Meanwhile people like him are able to sing songs and malign the so called "universal soldier" thanks to the existence of what he is condemning from his self righteous moral high horse.
