Against the backdrop of a brutal war, thousands of young Ukrainian hippies gathered in the mountains for a giant party: the annual Shypit Festival. Nudity, psychedelics, and dancing around the fire chanting “**** Putin” ensued.
For many, this was their last chance to party before being conscripted to the front lines.
But then the Ukrainian military showed up and began drafting the young revelers. While it may have ruined the party for some, these hippies are mostly keen to fight. In fact, they may be the first hippies in history who WANT to go to war…

I live in Ukraine, 100 km from Shypit. The festival was founded by my friends in the early nineties. I was there for the first time at 96. In total I visited 15 times. A million wonderful memories. This is a truly unique festival, one hundred percent DIY. And completely peaceful and friendly.

Guys I was there What this video fails to mention is that these "conscription papers" were handed to folks unlawfully. There is a set procedure that these cops did not follow. Many of the guys in the video have already made appointments with their local conscription "places" (idk what they are called in English) and therefore by law shouldn't be called into that regional office. That's the reason most of these men just ignore those papers. My husband got one there and we went through the whole process, so I know what I'm talking about. I suppose the creators of this video just didn't know about it, but I consider it to be an important detail.

Obviously the video talks about the festival from a quite shallow perspective, it's not just "ravers and psychedelics", but that's to be expected. And Vice PLEASE teach your operators to film without actually interfering with what's going on. I had to drag your cameramen away so that people dancing around the bonfire don't trip and fall into the flames more than once. We did not sign up to be filmed, nor are we getting any profit from your video, so at least try not to be an inconvenience.

There's a huge difference between serving in an army that mostly functions as a tool for imperialism overseas, and serving the army to defend the people of your country against invaders. @@PaulTheadra Well ranted ;) Yeah at least Ukrainians have a good reason to fight (though it's obviously a shitty reality that that reason exists), I feel for the boys on the Russian side who are also thrown into it for the ego-trip of their leader. It is weird tho to see how some Russians keep their patriotism in the face of their boys being taken away: I saw another VICE report where in one interview a father expressed his deep sadness for his son being drafted. As his wife had died a few years back, his son was the last person he loved, and now faced the possibility of being killed in war. Yet right after having said that, without hesitation he added that he fully understood his son to fulfill his duty to the country. Maybe it's just indoctrination, but it feels so unreal.

I feel grateful being able to go to Raves over here in the USA with no problems of war. Next month I get to go to a big festival while Ukrainians are fighting for their lives. I hope when this war is over , I can join them at this true underground rave. All us young people want is to live a happy life and be free. No one wants to die for a dictator. The Czech authorities ended up bringing a TANK and bunch of special opp guys. It was crazy and sad to watch. All these innocent ravers... many got beaten up, there are still some videos out there.

@@aw7x Ya it does, which I'm really glad for! I just haven't been in many years! And it always did move locations. Used to rotate between Quebec and Ontario, I'm assuming it still does. Lac Dumont was my favorite site. We used it a few times, and eventually just started referring to it as Paradise.

@@MissSladousek Well certainly not in terms of police response. We never had any trouble whatsoever with authorities in the years I was there. One time some friends and I did greet a lone OPP officer in a cruiser that somehow made it down the logging road we were at the end of to see what was going on. He immediately asked us who was in charge, was pretty blown away when we explained no one was, asked if everyone was okay, then turned around and left after telling us to be safe and have fun. Part of the reason for this, is that in Canada anyone can camp and gather in groups on crown land (land owned by the British monarch), provided no fees are charged to be there. We always did so. The other part is we were always very careful about choosing especially remote sites where we wouldn't bother anyone.

I was just a teenager when I started listening techno now I'm 41 and all I can say is that nobody can stop this even Putin. These raves reminds me to the golden age of the early 90's here in Western Europe. Since than electronic music has become a global and unstoppable phenomenon. Years ago police tried to repress this in Georgia failing miserably. By the way Loveparade started in this way after the fall of the Berlin wall against russian repression. Man I'd love to go there. This is where my bloodline runs. My great great grandpa had a surname that is super specific to the region between the Carpathian mountains and Eastern Moldova. And the other side of my family were all just pretty much born there. But as time goes on, I have less and less hope that I'll get to see any of this in my lifetime.
