@@lucasdutra67 because husbands want a son to inherit the family name and possessions. Plus poorer families couldn't afford more than one child since the country wouldn't cover costs of additional kids. So the burden and expectations of birthing a son was put on the mother who knew that having a girl would "bring shame to the family" and it would make family life difficult for both the child and the wife. There, a little bit of context behind your statement.
@francescalee24975 жыл бұрын
Female infanticide was something they took for granted, unfortunately. My grandma told of how her grandma crushed her newborn baby granddaughter with a stool while the parents watched on, too afraid to say anything. This was way before the one child policy (my grandma's 90). It's been done for centuries. The way women were viewed in China pre cultural revolution was similar to how women are viewed in rural India or Saudi Arabia these days. It was practically Sharia law with no god. There were honour killings (if you committed adultery, they drowned you in a pig cage). Girls were often sold into slavery (my other grandma was sold into slavery as a child and married a guy who was 40 years her senior to be a a sister wife/baby maker just to get some financial stability) and polygamy was very normal. China has always had a high percentage of unmarried men because the rich men had multiple wives and concubines and there has always been female infanticide.

Hence, even in this case, when they had to keep only one child, the girl children were the first to be sacrificed. Men are seen as important, so they are sent to wars, to protect the country, while women, are seen as useless, so they just become another object for exchange, through marriage, to become the background against the man, as a wife, cooking, cleaning, serving him, so he can do all the important tasks. Fellow brazilian woman here. We are very secondary citizen indeed. Brazil is a modern slave country. There are no citizens, there is only a market, everything has a price, and the money holders are white men. The same logic shown in the doc that the government only worried with men not finding wives, but didn't worry with child infanticide, applies here with our parliament discussing how to punish women for abortion. Wanting to put women in jail for 20 years for an abortion, twice the time that they voted to put a man that raped that same woman wanting to abort that pregnancy. We're not actual citizens, we're a tool

@@bn8781 let me clarify: if you are a woman, and you focus mostly on qualities inefficient to generate attraction on the opposite s3x (such as socioeconomic status), when to appeal to the largest possible sample of men implies you would rather value other characteristics, it can be said that there IS indeed something wrong with the way which you perceive what men want out of you which contributes to female singlehood. as with "incels", maybe this group of women who is 30+ and single can at least be partially responsible for their state of affairs? Wish this documentary had Chinese subtitles so I can send it to my parents. They each sent me a video of a woman (different women in each video) saying how she regrets never getting married. The women in those videos were probably around 40+ years old. In my mind, they can still get married if they wanted to, it's never too late to get married if you find someone who's right for you. They don't even realize that's propaganda meant to brainwash people. My mom keeps saying our (younger people's) way of thinking is skewed and says that if I don't get married and don't have kids, I'll be all alone when I'm old. I'd rather be alone than to be with someone who isn't right for me and makes me miserable. And it's not like people who get married and have kids don't end up all alone when they're old as well. But my parents just don't agree and don't understand. Also, it's so hypocritical to call older unmarried women "left over women" because there are way more men who can't find wives and some of them even have to resort to buying their wives through human trafficking. It's infuriating. And the criteria of a "desirable partner" is even more favorable for men, because you will always get older, but you'll never get younger. Even nowadays with the advantage of science, women in China are the first ones to be blamed for a couple's infertility and they even get blamed if they don't birth a son instead of a daughter. As if it wasn't the sperm that determines the gender.

There are several social issues impacting the situation: 1). The men (and likely their parents) are in “desperate defense” mode. They adhere to traditions that overvalue men and devalue women. At least some of these men were born and raised in place of a healthy, beautiful baby girl who was either aborted, murdered, or surrendered to an orphanage. They’re struggling to maintain status quo, their precious man-children are little kings entitled to the very best wives possible. “Best wife possible” means very young, attractive and healthy/fit to wait on husband and in-laws. They don’t want to admit their choices are limited and compromise is REQUIRED if these men are to successfully marry and have families. Let’s face it. These aren’t very intelligent people. 2). The women are rare and high value AND THEY KNOW IT. They were raised by families who either loved and wanted daughters or who at least were willing to raise them in a traditional society favoring men. Their families likely were wealthier (both financially and emotionally). They’re unmoved by the traditionalists and even the government “blame and shame” of their age and marital status. They’re educated and probably have sufficient mathematical skills to know the idiots scorning them as “too old” will regret it in another half-decade when their sons are STILL unmarried and childless. 3). The government caters to the LCD, shaming the “leftover women” when the REAL shame is obvious. You don’t demand compromise from the winners.

As a westerner who lived in China, their mindset is completely different and strange to the unacquainted. Westerners marry for happiness, generally because of our heathy economy situation and ability to care for ourselves with a non STEM job. In China, the economic situation is dire for much of the people, with most making only 10k a year (1/7 of the American average). Because of this Chinese often look at marriage as an economic tool to produce children that will eventually care for their elderly parents who will not be looked after by the state. There is no social security or Medicare in China; the old folks are on their own. Hopefully this helps explain why the criteria Chinese look for in their potential spouse seems so calculated and scientific rather than emotional. Marriage for many Chinese folks is not an exercise in love but an economic tool and retirement plan.

@@JohnDoe-gn4xj i don't agree. Almost no foreigners can speak well by that definition. Most will retain the accent from their native country but speak english fluently. Pronunciation is important but only until native speakers can understand you. A foreigner continuing their education of the english language until they get the exact accent that we speak with is great! And shows even better english BUT if they don't do that, it doesn't make them have bad english. You can't become extra fluent. Learning a language is learning vocab, grammar, and basic pronunciation. Once youre fluent, youre fluent. Once natives can understand them and they've got the vocab and grammar pretty much down, they are fluent and speak GREAT english, like the girl in the video. If accents matter so much, i can't understand some native speakers in America because of their accents. Are they bad at english now bc they don't have the basic accent (which what even is that? A solution would be a ratio of 3 females to 1 man. WITH equal representation or possibly more men in government due to the imbalance. With more females men would have a greater opportunity to find a wife, females in turn may become less picky on who they have as a husband due to the ratio. Today the inequality in dating isn't addressed. Women get 100 matches on a dating site and men maybe 2-3. THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM!

In China, women often have higher standards when choosing partners, seeking men who are relatively ‘better’ than themselves. This trend is particularly evident among women living in big cities, who generally prefer not to marry men from rural areas. Consequently, many of the surplus men in China are from these rural regions, facing challenges in finding spouses.
