I remember seeing people clunk corvettes when cash for clunkers was a thing. I was heart broken. People need to realize that the amount of work that went into these cars makes them worth keeping around. If more of us fixed stuff instead of throwing it away and blowing money on new stuff that doesn't work as well... I need a cold snack. Thanks Derek. Keep making content. It's inspirational.

Overheating on the highway usually means radiator is clogged. Ram air cools engine at speed, fan cools at idle/low speeds. Place your hand on the cooling fins down low and see if it’s cool, while the top area is hot. Pump blades may be rusted off, causing lack of flow. Seeing the freeze plugs missing, makes me wonder about the condition of the pump blades.

I had a 1953 chevy bel air that was the same yellow and white as your buick was originally. It also had a vapor lock problem. An old mechanic gave me this trick. Clip several wooden spring clothespins to the fuel line right there where you were pointing. I don't know why this worked.. but it did. I never had another problem with vapor lock.
@400brian3 жыл бұрын
Had experience with the split race ball bearings om the front end of my 55 Chevy years ago. They require frequent maintenance intervals, and need to be kept properly adjusted. In my case the simple fix was swapping on a pair of mid-60s tapered roller bearing hubs. I do not know if there is anything like that available for the Buick or not. The tapered roller bearings are just about bullet proof compared to the old ball design. These old cars will run at modern traffic speeds, but maybe you shouldn't, they are over 60 years old after all. Kudos on the trip!

That Buick is a work of art; from a time when American car designers were given free reign! Love this Buick!

If you're willing to do the labor yourself, you can pick up a fixer up classic car cheap sometimes.

When I was 17 my best friend bought a '56 Buick Special. We knew nothing about mechanics. Took one of the valve covers off: "what is all that?" (rockers, valve springs) LOL great memories. Stay 17 as long as you can! (John Mellencamp lyrics, or close to it) 😃👍

@Jeremy Stephens I was a year old when that Buick rolled out of the factory.

I know im dropping comments on some real old videos here, but i just want to say thank you Derek, for the crazy effort you've put into all these videos, not only fixing up and driving these old rigs all across the country, but taking the time to show us all the cool things along the way like this car museum. Youre my favorite fella on youtube Derek still to this day. I hope some day to win an old rig specifically that Duster from you, even though im in Canada. My uncle had a 74 before he passed and i really want to find one someday to honor him and what he did for the car community in my province back in the day. I love everything you do Derek, thank you again. Huge motivator.

I can't find part 3. Your program is addictive. I think we have all been stranded, due to vehicle breakdowns, so when we see you at the end of your day, we can feel your pain.

Well, if there's something I've learned from watching Derek is to go get a classic car and go drive through the backroads. There's too many awesome things out there to see.
@vincedibona4687 Жыл бұрын
Doesn’t even have to be a classic car. I plan on doing a trip from NC to Las Vegas, including historical Route 66, in a 2003 Camry. All backroads if I can help it. IDC how long it takes. 👍🏻

Gotta love it when someone starts to pass you then drops back for a better look before continuing on. I get where you're coming from on procrastinating--sometimes, when you care about the car, you don't want to start figuring out what's wrong because you just don't want to see it like that.

I love that museum. I was born way too early. I’d rather drive an old classic than most anything on the roads today.

You can hear the frustration in your voice in many parts of the video. The reason is because that car is very special to you and there is a respect you have. It’s your memories of the past with your dad and you are keeping it alive. That car is beautiful.
