It’s not really whale poo, and it usually isn’t defecated either, but stays in the intestines sperm whales until it dies before floating to the ocean surface and potentially making it to land. It eventually oxidises solid in the sun and air. How do I know all this? My daughter did a science project for it at primary school.

What I don't understand is why collecting ambergris would be illegal anywhere? How does it threaten the species if you collect it's poop? One would think the opposite actually - if the whale produces a valuable commodity in it's poop, that would make any prospective ambergris hunters and buyers want to ensure that the species thrived, would it not? It's not like, say, rhino horn, or ivory - it's something the animal discards, and no animals are harmed in collecting it.
@tommychoppa75643 жыл бұрын
Easy mate. Government doesn't make any money when its legal but can make some when its illegal. Fines, tax payer money for "enforcers", and probably a secret rouge group of people collecting and selling it illegally with no competition since almost no one is actively looking for it. Outlawing stuff has always been a money maker that's why the government loves to create laws and get rich off everyone else's loss.

you can probably find out somewhere if you even have a chance to find it in your area. you can also find amber the same way though, which is why ambergris is named amber grease. on baltic sea beaches for example, people have been collecting amber since forever. nowadays tourists are warned against it because there is white phosphorous from WW2 incendiary bombs that looks and floats somewhat amber-like, and if you put that in your pocket, it will self-ignite as it dries. burning white phosphorous is not something you want in your pocket.

Because it's not legalised in places like the us and stuff, New Zealand is just about the only place you can get it since sperm whales aren't found in many places. New Zealand only has around 4.5 million people or something, pretty much all of whom aren't interested in making a living off of picking animal excrement on the beach. If other places that had ambergris had the sale of it legalised such as australia and the us, of which australia has 25 million people and the us has like 300 and something million, a bunch of people would take lots of measures to find new ways to get it, which could include the illegal farming or poaching of sperm whales.
