OMG, I was a newborn baby when this happened, grew up in Illinois. Her brother is the same age as my brother. I'm so glad they were able to solve the case and get closure.

Did the perp know the victim? How'd they guess back then that he was the suspect?

He was a neighbor of some sort. This happened across the street from my house on Center St., but long before I lived there. Her parents were gone for the night or out of town, the other kids weren’t there, but I don’t recall if they were with the parents. They thought it was safe to leave her home alone. From what I was told, her parents were devastated. They thought it was him and figured his guilt got the best of him.

It might be a closer but in no way is it a comfort. A missing family member was never there. As for the perp, leave the body above ground for the scavengers to feast upon.

The fact that they still had viable DNA all this time later. That's weird.

Sad story, but how is justice served, you just confirmed what you already knew. What a waste of time, money, and resources. Do better Utah...

How is it a waste? They didn’t have enough evidence to close the case, which is why it is cold. Now it is officially closes.

Suspecting someone and having proof they did it are two different things. They suspected Owen did it but couldn’t get Owen to crack with circumstantial evidence before he offed himself. Without a confession the circumstantial evidence wasn’t enough so by law the case had to remain listed as open, as a cold case. DNA tests allowed them to prove that he did it. They can OFFICIALLY and formally CLOSE the case file now.

They didn’t have DNA tests back then. The missing information was HOW in the beginning of the case did they have Owen as a suspect? The report did not disclose that. In hindsight, it seems as if the guilt consumed Owen, which was why he committed suicide. Here is how I think they had Owen on the list of suspects: They could have pulled up the names of sexual offenders, and went from there. But they only suspected him. They couldn’t convict him just because he had committed a past crime. Reasonable doubt. Fast forward to now, and as the story said, the DNA match came in. I’m relieved for the family. I doubt that the parents were still alive though.

I disagree. If it was a loved one of mine, I'd want to know. It was money well spent.

They got a grant to pay for it. Also, they might have found out it wasn't him, and been able to prosecute the culprit. I'm glad the family finally knows.
