On Thursday, April 28, 2022 Pepperdine School of Public Policy hosted the 2022 Augustus and Patricia Tagliaferri Dean's Distinguished Lecture entailed Is There Hope for the 'Dying Citizen'? featuring Dr. Victor Davis Hanson.
In his latest bestselling book, The Dying Citizen, classicist, Dr. Hanson, explores the challenges to active citizen engagement in the 21st century-from the Administrative State to globalist corporate interests. As the Wall Street Journal noted in its book review: "Mr. Hanson hits hard, but I don’t find his analysis unfair or partisan."
At the heart of the American Project is the self-governing citizen-a person with agency who can influence the public policies impacting everyday life. Whether from the political left or right, public opinion surveys reveal-especially in this COVID-19 era-that Americans feel disconnected from their governing institutions and from one another.
Is there hope?
In this timely talk, offered in SPP's 25th anniversary year, Dr. Hanson will not only help us to better understand these hurdles to self-governance but also what we might learn from history to revive the "dying citizen."

The California Club made the right choice for their first big event in three years. Victor Davis Hanson is the greatest historian of our time. The man who started this wonderful speaker series passed away in December 2020. May Pepperdine University Regent Augustus Taliaferri Rest in Peace.

The most important point here is the lack of accountability. If a government official lies to congress under oath should at the least lose their job AND their government benefits/pension, at most be put up against the wall for treason.

I will feel more hope when Mr. Hanson is motivated to write a book titled, "The Modern Citizen, from life support to Free Again"

I'm afraid Dr. Hanson won't be able to write that book. I wish he could but the Left never stops pushing leftward.

Listen to this man! His “sober and judicious” insights are rooted in empirical data… historical trends… and “muscular” common sense. May God bless America (and VDH).

Mike Rowe and Victor Hanson brought together through an understanding of work. God implemented the fall of the human race & sin as the punishment for our sin with the final wage being death. He is a wrathful God but in His unbelievable mercy gave us a means to get through, and to do so in a godly manner if we would, through work. Work. We don't redeem ourselves with it, we can't imprrove this fallen world through ingenuity and perseverance unto heavenly perfection, we can't save ourselves (find another world...) with it but we can get through in a good and godly manner with it. We are lazy to our detriment. But lazy can't hold a candle to delegitimisation of the work ethic. Love his take on the trades. We need to give experience (what he specifically referred to) far greater respect. That is a thing for kids to aspire to and I wish it hadn't been so demeaned and disrespected for so long. Perhaps this insanity is succumbing to more rational thinking but please remember to avoid replacing one form of tyranny with another. Seek out the strength & wisdom of God. Start in the Holy Bible's Gospel of John then move on to the book of Proverbs then read the rest.

He is so spot on about everything...Especially about the young men in our country and their "failure to launch". We have taught them that they always will have a safety net. Parents have in many ways mimicked the "Nanny State" where there are no expectations for success just obstacles so we have to keep saving them. The best thing that we could do is cut them off completely and force them to fit in to the system that they are so vigorously resisting. Things would really change if public assistance and familial assistance was to cease as the economy would have to completely reshape itself due to the demand of those who actually contribute rather than just except hand outs.

There is ALWAYS hope for America and the American Citizen. It has been repeatedly said elsewhere that "Tough Times" make for "Tough People". Since the Invasion of Ukraine by Russia and with such high Gasoline and Food prices and now there is a further threat from Supply Chain issues and our Food, these "Tough Times" will NOW mold the "Tough People" our Nation needs right now! Looking at our Countries History, this is exactly what has happened!

Regards conservative professors: the advice Mr. Hanson gives is verbatim the advice given black and Japanese students in the 1950's. Guess there is always someone who needs to be twice as good to be as good. Good thing most people are lazy.

Abundance and “prosperity” are not always good too much of anything can be bad. Too much pride gives way to entitlement , too much abundance gives way to health problems such as obesity. Too much idleness gives way to people that are gong to be a burden to others such as people that have been on welfare all of their lives and even multiple generations. When abundance is rampant people tend to fabricate problems where they normally wouldn’t exist
