What specifically makes them bad? Mess, noise, personality? Because I’m about to get my first bird and I’m fine with both the mess and the noise. And I actually like the ‘not a family bird’ thing bc it would be only my pet, not anyone else’s. I’m also thinking about cockatiels but I have minor allergies and they produce dandruff. Also again I’m not looking for a family bird. The last thing I need is ANOTHER pet bonding with my sister and not liking me.

My first yellow sided green cheek was not social with anyone except for me & he was really hard to tame & even though he successfully bonded to me, he would still get nippy at times and had a tricky temperament. I recently got a brand new little girl who's a hybrid yellow sided/crimson bellied & she could not be more sweeter since the first day I picked her up and brought her home. When I took her out of the carrier, I was expecting biting, and there was nothing. Completely calm and sweet. All 4 of my young nieces were able to hold & pet her. I've had her about 2 weeks now & she is legit the sweetest bird. No biting whatsoever & anyone in the family can handle her. Literally got a dream bird everyone hopes for. I got very lucky & I'm assuming the breeder was totally hands on with all her birds. They really do make some of the best pets imo.

They all have distinct personalities just like people. You can get a sweet cuddly bird who is like velcro or you can a get one that is independent and rather hang out on a stand and play with toys. If your lucky you get a combination of both.😂 Birds aren't pets they are companions that are still wild and take alot of knowledge and work. I think a huge problem is people often assume a pet is a pet is a pet. As Victoria has pointed out a number of times, perhaps without enough emphasis, birds are not pack animals. You cannot own a dog and apply that relationship to birds, or cats, or ferrets. Parrots are individuals, even in a large group. They may kiss you, learn commands, allow you to hang them upside down like bats, but that does not mean the next one will. Every animal reacts differently to different people. The tragedy of abandoned, or returned, pets is that they were acquired by someone with insufficient knowledge, patience, attitude or desire to commit themselves to a lifetime relationship. There are too many people with optimistic, or unrealistic expectations. Your bird may never play peekaboo. It may never talk. It may never get along with a spouse, or a child. This is not anyone's fault. It is simply a reality for that animal that you chose to house, feed, care for, clean up after, etc. There are hundreds of videos these days on all manner of pets. Do yourself, and an animal out there, a favor. If you cannot commit to the relationship, don't. I haven't owned a dog since high school. I live alone and work many hours. It would not be fair to the animal, if I were to get a pet that knew when I was not there. So, I watch Jody and K'eyush the stunt husky, and Victoria and her menagerie, to get a few smiles. Do the world a favor. Make sure you are ABLE to make the commitment. If you decide yes, then BE committed. If it does not work out exactly as you hoped, that's life. Don't blame the animal. His life is in your hands. In my lifetime my family has owned parakeets, finches, snakes, hamsters, mice, gerbils, fish, horses, a skunk, dogs, cats and iguanas. Not all at the same time, but they were all part of the family, they were all loved and they were all well cared for. Also, please, under NO circumstances, just abandon a pet. There may be many reasons why the relationship cannot continue. Moving to a no pets building, marrying someone allergic to the animal, death, just to name a few. Brooklyn, New York has a large parrot colony. Their origin is a shipment of birds that got loose. Florida has a huge problem with python snakes and lion fish. The mid-west is trying to keep Asian carp from getting into the great lakes. Farel cats and dogs all started as as a few abandoned, or escaped, pets that were not neutered. Thank you all.

I got a new terrified pet store gcc. I have educated myself and started with budgies to learn pet birds.he came home and spooks every time i went near the cage. Strange enough, peekaboo is the one thing that got him to finally open up to me

For those who are confused: (This is what I believe what she means) The word "conure" has been used very loosely which leads to many misinformation. Due to people grouping many different birds together as "conures," they mistaken it as it's own species which have owners believe all Conures are the same (personally and care requirements). Conures is not a scientific classification but was made up in the pet trade. Her point is that the word "Conures" is an outdated which causes misunderstandings. I hope I explained that good

Conures do not "suck" all birds are intelligent, sensitive creatures and like other animals, if you are patient, a bond can be achieved. With that being said, like all animals, they can tell if you dislike them and in turn, they will dislike you. Show them love and respect and they will love and respect you with time. I feel so sorry for the Green Cheek you dislike that is now stuck with you...
@sailboat56143 жыл бұрын

@HealingSpectrumIntuition3 жыл бұрын
Maybe because you’re referring to her/him as an “it” as if your bird is an object. Birds demand respect. If you respect them, they will respect you. Just be patient and respect your bird as much as possible. You want your bird to feel as if they’re more than just a pet, you want them to feel as if they’re family because they are. I treat my birds as if they’re my biological children. However, if your bird was rescued from an abusive situation like three of mine were, forming a bond may take a lot of time and patience. It took a year for my Pineapple Conure to feel comfortable enough to let me pet her head but she still freaks out if her back or tail are touched even by her cage-mate.

How do you feel about the name robin, or wren, sparrow, titmouse? There's a huge variety in these too, but that's why we add descriptors such as yellow, superb blue fairy, tree, bearded etc. To differentiate. Same goes for mammals like fox, tiger, wolf. Surely conure is just a specific family of name in the parrot kind...the descriptor like Green cheek, Dusky, black caped etc gets you down to the individual species, in the same way we use Macaw. we know what family of psitacus is being referred to, we need the descriptor to know exactly which one if we need to be absolutely specific. The descriptor on it's own doesn't tell us much or even what phylum eg "Blue" are we talking about a titmouse, a Jay, a wren, a robin, a frog or a whale.

I wanted to get a gcc as my first bird and found a girl who had a gcc and sun for sale. By the time I responded to her ad, the gcc was already sold. She assured me that sun was amazing and very quiet, so I gave it a shot. The noise level is definitely stressful, but the pros outweigh the cons I feel. My sun is extremely affectionate, playful, friendly, and intelligent. She loves all the members in the household and is overall a great addition. We try to give her lots of attention and time out of the cage, which helps her noise level a ton.

I feel your pain. Over the years "Conure" has turned into a big umbrella term that lumps very, very different parrots together and tries to label them all the same. I agree with you that "Conure" can be a decent starting point for finding a feathered friend, and am sooooo glad you encourage everyone to research the individual species under the Conure heading. You are 100% correct that each type of Conure can be dramatically different from one another. Growing up I had a Half-Moon Conure whose temperament was nothing like the Green Cheek my family and I have today. Thank you for putting out this video.

I think the word. It's been used very loosely which leads to many misinformation. @leviradford7075 жыл бұрын
The word conure is definitely used interchangeably, but that is because taxonomy. It is not "outdated", there just happens to be many species that are considered a conure. Calling them conures also doesn't imply that they are all the same. We are considered primates, but people dont think we act the same way as a chimpanzee. That is not the fault of taxonomy, it is due to people misinforming each other.
@lovebirdsrule93455 жыл бұрын
It is very outdated. The word was used since the 1800s and more and more species became considered conure along the way. For sure needs updated the word is used so wishy washy now

Yes definitely taxonomy and people misinforming one another. Thats why we all need to stick together and help one another instead of bringing each other down or trying to prove to others that we know more than the next. @mrbluesplodge37404 жыл бұрын
I think conure is a branch of species that originaly came from one bird. Monkeys, apes, gorillas and humans are primates. In fact, if you go back further and further then conures and quaker then they are both parrots, and both came from one ancestor - and if you went back even further, than a pigeon, a bold eagle, and a conure all came from the same bird. But yes, I agree they should not be classified as just 'conures'.
@Khaoscntrl5 жыл бұрын
I was gonna say I feel like this is more of a 'you just didn't look it up' situation. But I will admit upon researching what bird I would be interested in I had a bit of help via 'My Right Bird'. I feel like I still would have gotten there myself but I can definitely see how some people would see conure and just assume they were different colors. Especially when people start calling saying 'pineapple' and 'yellow sided' 'green cheek' you would think its just a color difference so when you hear 'sun' you'd go oh it is bright cool. It would probably be very beneficial for different names to be used, I will haft to agree with that,.

She ( pineapple GCC) doesn’t act as regular GCC if I compare with any other green cheek Conure, sometime I wonder if she hybridized with any larger parrot or not! It’s not surprising if one argue every Conure species are different from one another, while I find every mutation in green cheek Conure differs from each other, such as temper, range of speech, patience etc. From my own experience I would suggest yellow sided green cheek Conure would be better option for beginners than pineapple GCC, although pineapple GCC are quieter than yellow sided, highly intelligent as well.

The difference between the different conures is the same as the difference between the different macaws. Deal with it, naming birds is hard and naming a group of similar bird that can breed together by one name is what we (humans) do. Of course each subspecies is so different and have very little to do with each other. But that's the same as with other birds species falling under the same term. I named macaws, but it also applies to pionus, cockatoos, amazons, and more. It just makes it easier to talk about birds. Accuracy should be used timely.
@VictoriaRyann5 жыл бұрын
Google conure. What does it tell you? All are loud. All are one person birds. All do not make for a good family bird. Shall I keep going? Do you believe those articles? This is what a potential bird owner sees when they begin their research on conures. If I had a dime for every time someone meets Yoshi or my friends gcc and goes "dang they are quiet and so nice... Nothing like I've read about conures" I'd be living like the Kardashians. Why can't we leave them for what they are. Green cheek parakeets. Sun parakeets. Do research on the species not the word conure. I don't know why doing research on the species instead of some made up word from the 1800s is something I should just "deal with".

I love this video thank you for this. I have a Pineapple Green Cheek Conure and I love him, he’s truly the best. However, even though they are known as a “quiet” species I can say that he is very capable of being as loud as a Sun/Jenday/Nanday (typically the noisiest conures), the difference is he doesn’t make noise nearly as often and is only very loud occasionally. Also Green Cheeks have more of a high pitched, fast paced scream in intervals rather then the loud constant screeching of say a Sun conure.

Yeah I agree with you but they're little beady eyes and they're tiny body just makes me want to get one which I did get one but they're so loud they always scream and don't allow you to grab them or else they will bite you

My rescue gcc Rio Bella Lugosi ( she loves going for blood) looks just like your Yoshi, doesn’t want to be touched and will be calmly sitting on your shoulder when out of the blue she walks over to your neck;, ear, arm whatever & chomps down really hard grinding her upper & lower beaks together. It’s very hard to remain motionless or do the “earthquake” method to dislodge her. I’ve had her over a year & know nothing about her background. I definitely have a love hate relationship with this bird. I do agree they are very clownish and not nearly as messy as parakeets or cockatiels.
@VictoriaRyann5 жыл бұрын
Oh wow. Did she have a rough past with previous owners? That is definitely not normal especially from a gcc. I agree though when people say sit there and take the bite like a champ I truly wonder if those people have ever been bit by an angry birb lol

I agree, The word conure is used very interchangeably & that’s bad bc a sun conure is VERY different than green cheeks. But most just call them “conures”. People also say “Conures are so loud” but the truth is GCC aren’t very loud & they are more gravely in sound. Animal wonders had a good saying that I can’t remember now but it was kinda applicable to this. Like “ all conures are parrots but not all parrots are conures, all green cheeks are conures but not all conures are green cheeks” lmao it didn’t go like that but I know she had one that cleared up a LOT of what you’re talking about. Lmao she’s your mama so I’m sure you know what vid I’m talking about hahahahahaha
@VictoriaRyann5 жыл бұрын
Hahaha yes!!! I watched Mama's vid so many times I guarantee you I'm half her views 😂 the title was something along the lines of "what is a conure". I'll find it and put it in my description. But yeah it's so annoying. People will randomly come up to me and be like "how do you deal with such a loud bird on your shoulder Conures are so loud and mean" and I get somewhat offended over my yoshikens 😂 he's nothing like that.

I got my second bird (Conure) just over a week ago. Kinda a big step from a parakeet. I found the same misleading info about them being loud and even found that they can be aggressive. So I drive to get him. He is a pineapple green cheek, about 6 months old, his previous family was too busy for him so he didn’t get any attention and didn’t know how to step up. Got home and taught him to step up. Most cuddly bird ever and he never bites. Only nips when he is trying to step up for support. Cutes thing about him. His happy squawks sound like a duck.

I had a Nanday conure until he was close to death and I needed to move and rehome him and his last dying months. However I owned him for about 15 years of let me tell you that parrot was a handful. He was a fighter. Very very loud and screamed at children and strangers and was not user-friendly with other people except for me. My conure. Required frequent bathing. These birds love water and by bird that stressed out if he did not get water a lot at attention a lot. I strongly don’t Recommend these birds for first time owners at all they are difficult. And I am a bird handler with a lot of patience and have the scars to prove it.

@AirFire184 жыл бұрын
This doesn’t make any sense. You are making your judgement based on other people’s experiences but not the whole experiences. My conure is incredibly quiet, I’m actually surprised sometimes when he makes a noise. His noise is not loud. The only time he makes noise is if he’s scared or saw a spider LOL But, conures in Latin America are pets as well. So, I’m confused why you see the issue since these birds have had a background with people with humans for years. 🤷🏻♀️ My grandparents had similar birds and they are from the country. its not a big deal 🤷🏻♀️ Conures are family birds LOL. My bird loves everyone in the family , sure he has a preference but they are family pets. The issue comes down to the owner and the lack of training. So, no. If you have issues with your pet is because you have lacked the training. My bird poops on command and he comes when i call him. Conures is the right term and should never changed because it is a branch of the species due to very similar traits. You are trying to teach people here but they are very similar when it comes to looks. That’s why they are conures, but they have sub-traits. Similar to baboons or elephants. There are different branches of the species but they are not all the same. Macaws, canaries etc etc have these sub species because they have similar bone structures and similar behaviour tendencies. Thus, similar looks overall and body functions. People who complain about the word , clearly don’t understand birds🤷🏻♀️. I study birds and this whole video has false information 😂. It baffles me that this information might be taken seriously. The birds behaviour is instinctual but they are trained when they act out cause some birds are more aggressive towards people. Sun conures can be trained to only make noise during certain times during the day. It takes a long time, but the key is training if people have issues. Training doesn’t have to be hard too, you can have a loving relationship and train them . In spanish, we have different words for them cause of colour and that is why they have different names. But, as someone who teaches spanish I feel the word in English does it justice since they share similar features. The key words is the adjective to the noun, which would describe if its green, sun etc. English works this way and although Spanish does it differently, both are just fine 🤦🏻♀️ Pyrrhura is a genus of parrots in the Arini tribe and although Colorado del Sol is different, the issue comes down when people study these birds and see similarities. I don’t think the language will change since language is not consistent between countries at times. El Salvador says it differently than those in Peru, and that goes for Mexicans as well. Dialects and names changes the word for these birds, you just happen to get the one you don’t like.

I have a one year conure. A nanday and he totally gets loud.....once in awhile...you know....when I get home from work lol. He trains so well and loves the whole family. If you don't have time to hang out for a few hours a day of one to one time maybe not for you. Completely different from my other sun. I think nanday falls under aratinga as well. I hear you can cross breed with others.

I learned something valuable about (Sun) Conures today. If kept in captivity, DO NOT give them protein. I have never owned a bird so I decided to volunteer at a bird shelter. Anyways there is a sun conure that really bonded with me there and it's story was that it was very hormonal because it was fed a high protein diet. Once it got to the shelter it became very calm once it started eating an indoor conure diet of (fruits, vegetables and) pellets. The lady at the shelter says that she sees this all the time. Protein is good for the active birds in the wild. It's like giving a child sugar and telling them to go to their room.

Hey Victoria ❤️ first of all I’m a huge fan! As a second time bird owner previously owning 2, anyway I have a bird loving family and I was allowed another bird I was stuck between a lovebird conure,ringneck, parrotlet the list goes on as I love all the birds, I have done tons of research on all of the ones I liked and narrowed my choices down to two lovely birds, a ringneck or a conure, I have dons lots of research or everything about the birds and just can’t decide, I was wondering your opinion on it, I am fully committed for the noise and mess, as the birds I have are VERY loud and I understand that birds are a huge commitment and can take long to tame, anyway sorry for this being so long, would love to hear your opinion ❤️
@amira86033 жыл бұрын
Huhh, maybe its just me, but i thought that everyone searches conure, look at the different conures and than search about a conure species, for example sun conure. I dont think that the name really put them together, because, well you can see the difference, and also all cat are cat but not all cat are the same. So in German they are all "Sittiche" but still noone would think its the same as budgies ( in german they named WellenSITTICHE). People just are bad in researching.

Eclectus would probably be good choice especially the male, he's the green one and the female is scarlet and violet one.
@alexishere47385 жыл бұрын
This isn't an issue with the classification of calling them a conure. It's an issue of people being misinformed and not doing enough research, aka even a simple search like you did with the word conure. Every site and recommended video specified they were different kinds of conures. So if someone can't do that simple of research they likely wouldn't be taking proper care of there bird anyways.
@VictoriaRyann5 жыл бұрын
I see where you're coming from. But unfortunately I've seen just about as many sites stating all Conures are loud, one person birds, and not good family birds. Which doesn't make sense to me because some of these are fairly reputable sites why would they be saying all are the same when they aren't? When someone is completely new to birds I can see why it's confusing. Yes, you'll find sites that state all are different. However, you'll also find many that say the opposite. Leaving people confused and questioning what the truth is. Also in my opinion, research isn't the only thing that determines a bad or good bird owner. You can do all the research in the world but lack of patience and love for these animals will ultimately become a negative situation. Does that make sense?

@compulsiverambler13525 жыл бұрын
I agree that people often wrongly assume all conure species have the same behavioural traits, but I think it's better to correct them on that assumption than to try to discourage use of the word, which I doubt is going anywhere. The category does have scientific usefulness as they have common ancestor species that non-conure parrots don't. The same applies to categories like 'lovebird', 'cockatoo', 'macaw' and 'Amazon'. They aren't going to fall out of popular use any time soon because most people can't name all the specific species, even most amateur parrot enthusiasts. For example, if I ever see a lost small-to-medium parrot with a long tail and bald circles around the eyes, I'll know to report a conure or conure-like bird and to search for missing conure posts online, even if I've never seen the specific species before.
@VictoriaRyann5 жыл бұрын
Oh I totally see that side of it and I'm all for anything making it easier for potential bird enthusiasts cause it is a lot to try to understand. The part that REALLY aggravates me is somewhere along the way the word is being used to say that all Conures are the same. Which I'm sure you know, is simply not true. It really gets on my nerves when people are asking a recommendation for their first bird and I have heard repeatedly people say "oh get you a conure". Not every single conure is a good fit for everyone. So the word has left a bad taste simply because it is now used to group all of the species as the same. I'm all for using the word as guide. If someone wants a good starting point because they like a lot of the characteristics of Conures then by all means look them up. Just find the conure on the list that looks appealing to you and then start looking up that species. Cause they aren't all the same. And being one of the top rehomed parrots of the world I think we should start looking at alternative approaches and taking things a little more seriously. But yeah I see where you're coming from. Just need alternative solutions you know?

Super late comment on my part. XD But I felt compelled to place one anyway. I've owned 2 pineapple conures (I think that's their name in English, which is not my native language heh). I "shared" them with my grandma, who wanted to have birds, but was afraid that they'd outlive her, so refrained. This was our solution. They'd live at her place, I did the cleaning and training for/with her and if needed, they could come live with me. The birds took to the training well, bonded with both her and me equally, were rarely loud, but also extremely different from each other. Pip was playful, chaotic and super social and chatty. Maya was nippy, shy and preferred to be by herself or with Pip, save for the occassional cuddle in the morning. And that was with two of the same kind of conure! Let alone the differences amongst all different kinds of conure. I agree it is smartest to do research and - once you have a bird - get to know them as an "individual". :)
