I have an honest question that maybe someone can answer. When and why did batoning wood become the de facto baseline test of determining whether a knife can be considered worthy of being labeled as suitable for bushcraft? My reasons for asking are: 1) As a rule, most knives are not designed to do batoning. That’s what a hatchet or an axe is for. The stresses batoning inflicts on a knife are extreme, regardless of steel type, edge profile or blade design. Some are more resilient then others but given enough time of extreme use like this, something will fail. The only exception being, I suppose, an extremely heavy and thick blade, in which case you may as well be carrying a hatchet or axe anyway. A thick, heavy blade doesn’t allow for accurate precision work very easily. 2) In all my years of practicing bushcraft, from my youth in the boy scouts up to my present re-introduction after a long hiatus, I can honestly say I have never come across a situation where I needed to baton wood. The vast majority of batoning I see in videos is for processing firewood into kindling. But if you’re collecting firewood, 99% of the time you’re in the woods in which case you’re surrounded by kindling of all types and thicknesses, thus rendering batoning unnecessary IMHO. If processing wood for another purpose, (i.e. building a shelter, crafting camp furniture or tools) here again it’s more effective, safer and precise using a hatchet/axe to remove bulk and a knife to fine tune. 3) If you’re in a legitimate survival situation, all bets are off. You do whatever you have to in order to survive/get rescued. But that doesn’t warrant giving a knife’s ability to baton the unusually high emphasis it seems to have in accepting or dismissing it as being suitable for bushcraft. Again I struggle to see a need to baton in this situation but regardless, the vast majority of survival situations are resolved quickly, (usually within a week), meaning a knife only has to stand up to batoning for a short period of time, damaged or not. So again, why so much emphasis/priority placed on a knife’s ability to baton?

11:21 "... i wouldn't recommend it for ... " Well, just in case you haven't see Felix Immler's launch video, nor do Victorinox themselves recommend it for those extra heavy duty or survival type tasks. The knife is aimed at pure bushcrafting tasks, just as you stated. So, within the parameters of its design philosophy, it seems that the knife performs exactly as Victorinox set out to achieve! Their sales to date (and the fact that I can't find one to purchase!) seem to indicate a wide and positive acceptance within the knife community.

Here is what is said on the Victorinox website about this knife. "For limitless bushcrafting adventures. Discover the rugged Venture collection Blades made for outdoor adventures. Discover our Venture collection: a range of fixed blade knives designed by experts and designed for bushcraft. Made of high quality steel renowned for its exceptional robustness, these knives of unfailing reliability meet the challenges encountered in the great outdoors. To imply that the knife can be used for bushcraft "without limits" and to meet "all types of challenges", I find that misleading. www.victorinox.com/fr/fr/Collection-Venture/cms/venture-collection

@dennisleighton2812 Felix Imlar, does not do most of his splitting with knives. Even when he does it, he usually expresses caution. That said, it's fair to say most people expect a bushcraft knife to be able to baton wood. I happen to fall right in the demographic for this knife. You see, I own a hatchet. Also, I'm anal-retentive about my blades. Even if you don't damage your knife batoning, you dull it.

i love Swiss army - i own about 30 of their pocket knives - great video - you exposed a true weakness -as a barbarian all i can say is that when i have to split a piece of wood - i dont know or care about the hardness of the wood - i grab my blade - a ontario sp8 and slam my way through - is it a sophisticated blade ? - NO sir - its just a chunk of steel - does it have a weak tang blade interface ? yes - but i never worry about it breaking - is it heavy ? yes - that only helps it go through more wood - can it carve ? not really - it can chop - pry - dig - hammer - i use it to chop roots close to the surface - through the dirt - its a tool - better than a knife - i even thought of a way of re-enforcing the tang just because its such a fantastic tool - its strong - cheap and effective - the harder the log the harder you hammer the sp8 and it will not fail you - any carving i simply carry a actual carving knife made for the task - cooking is accomplished by a good folding pocket knife - there is no one knife / tool solution - just suck it up and carry what you might need - but the victorianox is a cute knife - would rather carry a Japanese chef knife and have a kdex sheath made for it - again - i chopped through 2 inches of dirt and then the tree root with the ontario sp8 and there was zero damage

That's fine Craig. I really urge you to follow up on what Felix Immler has said about the criticism of the Venture, and that will surely put it into context. If you are looking for a knife that can do batoning thick or hard wood without damage, you should look for a different knife. This Venture is not intended for doing heavy batoning such as mentioned caused the damage. It's a BUSHCRAFTING knife with a very fine edge designed for cutting, which it does well. Good luck with selecting the right knife. 👍

First I’m not a follower of the idea you need to baton. I’ve been through survival training from desert to swamp. An never found a need to baton. Now that said I do see batoning as a good test. I just don’t believe it’s needed for real world use. I’m very shocked 80cv broke out. That’s a extremely tough steel. I really would like to see what rippled the edge of the 14c28n. Especially because batoning doesn’t usually cause that. In my experience a ripple is from prying or cutting extremely hard materials like metal. I don’t see wood causing that. It’s nice that both accidents happened when the cameras were off. Guess this knife is a wait an see. Well I guess I’ll just have to use my terrachete it’s awesome.

Hi Regarding the blade of the Skrama in 80crV2 steel, it happened to other users, I learned about it during a discussion. Probably a production batch problem. The deformation of the blade on the Venture must have occurred when I cut small branches on the log before batoning.

I completely agree with your comment regarding batoning - when did this become the reference point for a judging a knife??? I've spent over 40+ years hiking/backpacking and have never once resorted to using my knife in that capacity. A small pack hatchet is a much more appropriate tool for such a task - the right tool for the right job. If I was in a survival situation, the last thing I would do is risk damaging my knife by batoning - I don't need perfectly formed kindling to start a fire.

Do you really think Victorinox would get the sheath wrong? Or could it be, just like Falkniven, a premier designer of knives to be used in arctic conditions, whose sheaths also rattle, is you make a close fitting sheath in those conditions the knife freezes in the sheath, rendering it useless. I’d advise you to watch Felix Immlers videos, he helped design it, I think you’ll find yourself wanting. Poor review.

The new Fällkniven sheaths from the X ranges provide good locking without as much vibration. A knife that vibrates in the sheath emits a lot of noise and this is not an advantage for all those who have to move discreetly in nature. Surely there is a much better compromise to be found.

Liked and subscribed. The sheath is a let down but one can always get an aftermarket kydex sheath that would work better. Talking about great outdoors kitchen knife, the Mora Kansbol is a good candidate. I never use it for outdoors but it is a great kitchen knife. I have to see this Venture up close if it will be a good utility knife for both outdoors and indoors. As for the edge damaged, no way wood could inflict such damage to a knife that is hardened to 59 HRC. There must have been some sand pebbles that got caught in the wood piece. If the user desire robustness over sharpness, one could always reprofile the cutting edge to a more gentle angle. Just my 2 cents.

Lot of questions with this knife. You're not the first one tu ruin one on KZbin, so this knife is not as sturdy as à mora companion or pro. But I see how it cuts, slices, and seems extremely ergonomic. May be it shall be completed with a saw or Hatcher for bushcrafters, but I am just a knife enthusiast camper and I am going to order one when available. If victorinox want to keep claiming it's a sturdy knife, they have to change the grind geometry to a Saber or convex edge with a thicker edge, loosing the thin edge benefits. DO NOT BATON WITH THIS KNIFE...I'm in the process of returning my Venture now after thinking it could lightly baton a piece of cherry. Well guess what? The blade failed and I lost a huge chunk out of the cutting edge...use it for light camp work and wood carving...it's not a Mora

In general, if I am batoning, I make me a wedge for final spitting the wood. Basically I think you did not really get the real versatile functionality of this knive and how and why it was designed like this. Smashing a knive at it's back causes damage on every knive bcs knives like this are made for slicing not for smashing. For the rhe sheet retention problem, there is a solution, look Felix Immler's latest video. For batoning clean through, I use my Sacki 3.0, but hey kaybe you don't know about this knive.

To avoid any disappointment upon purchasing, it is important to understand that the design of this knife is contradictory: - A 3.4mm thick blade + full tang = a strong knife that can withstand impact. BUT - A flat grind + 16° bevel per side = a blade that slices well but with a fragile geometry. => Therefore, this knife can only be FRAGILE, despite the thickness of its spine and its full tang. This does not make it a bad tool, but for example, a Mora Bushcraft Black or a Terassaur, which are much cheaper, will be more robust. If you mainly want to cut food, the Venture will be more suitable. But there are cheaper options... For those who like to read: So the question arises: what is the point of having a full tang? In my opinion: For marketing purposes only. To sell, to give boners to Americans who only have the word "full tang" in their mouths, to create an illusion, to impress, to trigger impulsive purchases... How? For the little hexagonal hole you say? GADGET and even a rather dangerous one. Using the handle of a knife with a super sharp blade on the other side as a drill handle, not for me...

This was a very well made and informative video and I thank you for your efforts and look forward to more of your work . Knives have been a part of my life for many years and in many environments but I will never be a millionaire so have always been careful to chose the best I can afford that will do what I ask of it .I have a fondness for the SAK Victorinox in particular and have carried one or more for over 40 years so I was very interested and pleased when they brought out a fixed blade for bush craft ,your review of it ,to me is honest and quite correct and while I may get one in the future I feel I would be better served by a Condor Bush Lore or a Kephart. I would probably pair it up with a larger blade as a companion knife as I currently do with the Mora Companion series as it seems a little thin for the kind of regular tasks it will be needed to perform in a real emergency or prolonged trek, though it is beautifully sharp like my Mora's . Glad I found you .

Very fair & thorough review, it seems to me one of Victorinox’s larger folders would do most of the carving tasks If you can’t do the wood processing that most bushcraft knives are expected to be able to do, then there is no advantage. over a folding knife. Thanks for the video.

This is one of the best Kitchen knives Victorinox has ever made, but I won't be buying it as I already own 5 of their kitchen knives and I own a 111mm Outrider, a 130mm Ranger Grip 79, several 111mm Foresters & Rucksacks plus 111mm Picnickers / Nomads. Kitchen knives should not pose as outdoor knives, their place is in the Kitchen! "Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock and now the Victorinox Venture! Kitchen Knife"

Victorinox has some kitchenknives, but the venture is not sold as such. To me it's also not a typical bushcraft knife. It looks so cheap, made totally different to their folders, which are excellent. Victorinox has two more bushcraft knives which are produced in Spain from Muela. So I expected much more from a Victorinox bushcraft knife Made In Switzerland, especially when it's designed and made with the help of Felix Immler. By the way, cuckoo clocks don't have anything to do with Switzerland. They are typical clocks from the Schwarzwald (Black Forrest) Germany😉. Here you can find even the biggest cuckoo clocks of the world (big as a House). And hey, we can make good bushcraftknives too. Watch for the Rotwild "Falke". Made by Otter Knives in Solingen Germany. Handmade, with a Böhler N690 blade. And of course much more expensive. List price is about 250 Euros. But much better quality than the Venture.

@@michelottix4428 Happy Saturday, I am aware that the Cuckoo Clock is a German invention, the quote I used is from the classic 1949 film with Orson Welles called "The Third Man" set in allied controlled post-war Vienna. I agree completely that Victorinox have not produced a quality bushcraft knife in the Venture, unlike their 2 Outdoor Master fixed blade knives, for that reason I class it as a kitchen knife. Victorinox has IMO made a mistake in straying from their main business of folding pocket knives, this year 2023 they have discontinued 39 SAK's some of them small popular models & cut the range of colours that were available on many others to just plain red and in 2024 it is rumored that the entire very popular 85mm Delmont (ex-Wanger) range of SAK's will also be discontinued too, all the while whilst producing a new Evoke series of 136mm Alox single locking blade folders which like the new Venture are not core business and because of their bade length and locking mechanism are not legal in about 40% of the countries worldwide, to me it makes no sense for Victorinox to put so much effort into a niche market for large outdoor knives! Hi Steve :) I tend to agree with you on this. This kitchen knife reminds me of ColdSteel Slock Master, but shorter, 0.1mm thiner, and 3+ times the cost. You're right! I'm already bringing a 111m SAK into the forest. I got a kitchen and fine carving blade on it. Now I want a Scandi beast to process wood. Where is it? Not in this kitchen knife! What a disappointment. It does look aesthetically pleasing. I'll give it that, but it's not enough.

After watching your video, I was surprised to see the damage caused to the edge of the blade. But as most large manufacturers I imagine, it's quantity and not quality. All machined and not lovingly hand crafted. Maybe as they only recently moved to full tang and as no one would batton a log with a folder, the expertise wasn't there. As where manufacturers like mora started with a knife for doing these kind of bushcraft jobs in mind and probably tested their products for the extremes. Maybe they should go back to the drawing board and re think . There are so many other knife manufacturers that have got it right. Maybe they should have looked at these first.

Every knife has some luck built in. Build luck, user luck, and life's luck. This test example ran out pretty fast. Would another example of the same have more? Thousands of Skramas have been sold and few have ever run out of luck. Mine I beat the hell out of and seven years on is still regularly working hard. They have a very good warranty by all accounts for those that are luckless, (miss a heat treatment stage or just bad luck). This Victorinox looks a fine cutting knife. Probably not a Garberg killer, or the better Terava 110/120. Not really up to modern Bushcraft demands. Having said that, I like its design and for a load of cutting tasks it may do really well. So many tasked are better achieved without an overly built brick of a knife. Victorianox does suffer from being a bit of a fashion and marketing victim; which is probably why this knife is overhyped and expensive for what it is. It shouldn't be more than $/£75, and then it might well be good value. There is a lot of competition for this size and scale of knife. I have a good few Victorinox, but this one need to do a lot more than it is, especially at this price point. Good review.

I've had a few Victorianox Swiss Army Penknives. I use them intelligently enough to not damage them much/often. Some I have had for twenty, thirty, years. Not much I can't do with one, just takes more time. The Venture knife has a sound design but is overpriced and wrongly described. Which is the fault of their marketing team. $/£80 would be plenty for the materials and brand appeal; and then would be a good enough investment.@@forzaknife

I don't like that knife and I wouldn't buy it, if it cost fifty percent less. With that said though. Batoning with a knife. Especially one not designed to do so. Is not a fair test of a knife. Each tool has its uses, and one should only use the right tool for the task. If you want to split wood. Use an axe, or one of the big knives. Which are designed specifically for that purpose. There's never any need to split wood that way anyway. If you don't know how to find dry wood. Stick to city sidewalks. If you go out into the wild. Without the proper knowledge. Not only do you put your life at risk. You endanger the lives of those. Who will inevitably need to go out and rescue you. I can find dry wood in the middle of a torrential down pour, in the winter. When there's six feet of snow on the ground. I've built thousands of fires and I've never needed to split wood for a campfire. There's no one tool for every job. You can find some tools. Which will do a mediocre job at most tasks, or you can carry multiple tools. Which will do an excellent job at specific tasks.
