it's obvious why the 87 Thunderbird was Bob's favorite car, it was the fastest, quickest, biggest motor, 500" Boss hemi Ford mill. also the most upgraded paint job, appearance, suspension, cylinder head, intake manifold, etc. development.

Bob Glidden represented Ford Motor Company and Ford Racing with dignity and honor. Many racers came and went during Bob's career but thanks to the hard work and tenacity of the Glidden family, he won 85 NHRA races and 10 Pro Stock titles. Rest in peace, legend. You were an important part of the growth of Pro Stock and the NHRA. You'll never be forgotten.

Met Bob once at Sears Point in the 80's. He took time to autograph and say hi. Bob was a class act. Thanks for the memories Bob.

Mr. Glidden, Sir, You are a legend of pro stock drag racing. You showed the boys at Chrysler and Chevrolet just what a small block ford 351 Cleveland would do to them. That is a fact and it can not be contested, it is in the record books. May you always be appreciated for what you brought to the sport. My personal salute to you Bob Glidden
@NeilLB76 жыл бұрын
Glidden also ran a Chevy Monza for a short period (with no success and to prove a point) and also ran a Plymouth Arrow Chrysler sponsored car in 1979 which had good success for one year. He did that because they sponsored him and Ford had not yet done so. It was a business decision although he preferred Ford. In that business you race what wins....especially if they pay for it all too. Later Chrysler filed bankruptcy so back to Ford.

I love it. That was always my hero in the sport. A legend is the only word to describe him. I met you at Bristol drag way in late 1980's when they were still in ihra with the Thunderbird he's talking about. You touched my life and remain an icon to me sir. A great innovator and one of the greatest pro drag racers of all time.

I loved it back when they had the manufacturers trophy for the "make" with the most points. Bob would quailfy number one, set the speed and ET records, and then win the event outpointing all the GM hordes. Amazing! In 1978 he won 14 races and 50 rounds of competition in a row. Loved it when he beat that whining WJ.

In 79' Glidden ran a FORD Faremont. He won 9 races in a row. Ford Power!

Somewhat true...but slightly different, yet more true than what you said. His first Fairmont was a 1978 season car built to get the longer wheelbase and bigger car which gave him weight breaks etc based on rules at the time (The red white and blue car). It came together right at the early part of 1978 and not only won 9 races in a row....it NEVER lost a round of competition at any time, whether at a match race for points or a Pro-Stock event. It was undefeated. In 1979 he went on to run a Plymouth Arrow for the season, despite his success with Ford engines, because Chrysler sponsored him and provided him with parts, trailers, money etc....something Ford would not do. In 1980 Chrysler filed bankruptcy and ended all racing programs. So he built another Fairmont (White and blue) which was a very competitive car as well.

NeilLB7 your so right Neil,Bob had the ONLY pro stock to retire undefeated,what a great accomplishment by a great man!!! RIP MR.GLIDDEN.

The undefeated Fairmont car was built in 2 weeks and final paint was applied 10 miles up the road from me at Clark Chevrolet in Cayuga Indiana. Albert Clark (dealer owner) raced in Pro Stock as well and offered to get the car painted for Bob over a weekend so he could get it on the track. Heard the story from Albert himself. My favorite Glidden cars was the 86-88 Thunderbirds and the 1991-92 Probes. I have the Probe T-Shirt of him pulling a wheelie off the line. Never wore it.

@@NeilLB7 hey there Hoosier bro. I had the amazing honor of bouncing around inside that Fairmont while Bob and Etta were visiting relatives on Sayer drive in Greenwood. Bob's cousin who was much younger than him (that's how I remember it anyway) was a friend and he came running to my house and we ran back and just stared at that beautiful car for a long time. Then...cuz we were little hooligans...we jumped in and pretended to be Bob for a few minutes. We laughed so hard! One of those valuable memories you know. I don't know if they knew we were bouncing around in the car but I get the feeling they would have just laughed at us. I don't use the word hero lightly, so I'll just say Bob and Etta have a firm place on my memories as a child. And that CAR! Damn, what a beautiful car!
@NeilLB73 жыл бұрын
@@JeromyBranch Great story!! I was a "Ford" kid as a child. Grandpa had all Ford trucks and cars. Kids at school always seemed to like Chevrolet. It was the 80's and brand loyalty was KING. Nascar...Prostock...Monster Trucks....they all had brand loyalty. The car commercials were off the charts back then. I remember a Ford F250 climbing a hill made out of concrete blocks while towing a Chevy and a Dodge in the bed. Probably impossible. And Dodge trucks falling out of the sky landing on all fours and bouncing in a cloud of dust...RAM TOUGH. Chevy always had a tough rancher guy in a Silverado package K20....LIKE A ROCK. Etc etc etc. So I was drawn to Ford because Bob's Thunderbirds looked so good. And the Probe car was so fast. Good times. And at my first US Nationals in 1990...Bob took the time to talk to me about his car for 15 minutes. The crowd was thin that Thursday and he was standing by himself at his truck setup. It was so great. He answered all my questions and shook my hand. Something a high school kid like me (at the time) will never forget.

Hard working American drag racing legend, could make anything run and win.Nhra factored him he went Mopar next year and showed them all.Much respect RIP Bob
@rogerbeutler56716 жыл бұрын
I agree except that it wasn't because NHRA made it hard for him, but because Ford withdrew their support & Mopar offered him a financial deal that he couldn't pass up. Didn't matter. He won with that Plymouth Arrow. Greatest drag racer of all time & a true gentleman. Also the hardest working & he won with far less resources than many of the other Pro Stock teams. You will be truly missed!

RIP Champ. You will be missed. Seen him with Billy at SCSN Vegas 2008. Both of them racing. Bob was in a Billy prepped black mustang with I believe a 400ci nitrous motor. Didn't do so well but it was cool to see him on the track again. Was standing in the staging lanes at the Seattle Raceway for the big Winston pro race. Guy ahead of me swung his head around to avoid being peppered with gravel at the launch of two cars. Was Bob Glidden,,2 feet away. A wink and a smile and he turned back around. I was wide eyeball stunned. lol.

I don't care much for Ugly old Fords … but Bob Glidden built his own cars and Motors in his own shop .. and a much smaller Budgets then many of his Competitors and he won a lot.. He and Grumpy Jenkins won enough to make a living at it with out big Sponsors on the early days of drag racing..

Don Hardy built his cars for many years in Floydada, Tx. Don Hardy quit building the Glidden cars in the early 80’s and I personally asked him why. Don’s response was, “The Gliddens are very hard to please” and he left it at that. Hardy built several of their championship cars...
