My son was born premature with an undeveloped stomach and I had to make all his food from scratch because processed food would cause a lot of belly pain for him. So I became a stay-at-home mom and studied ways to make food and treats for him. I wish the internet was available for me back then like it is now, it would have been a lot easier. I made a lot of homemade treats when he was in grade school. Our nutritionist told me to use raspberry, tomato or Hibiscus powder for red food colouring, turmeric and saffron for yellow (a tiny bit goes a long way), red cabbage powder and baking soda for blue and matcha for the green with some natural citric acid, and blueberry powder for purple. I had to make my own 20 years ago it wasn't easy to get them, but with today's markets, the manufacturers can easily swap these synthetic dyes for natural food ones. Great idea about your "study", but I think going for 90 days the results would be more significant, especially since it takes 90 days to see any significant body change and so that other outside factors could be accounted for and eliminated. Maybe we should try it with our friends, I know my Endocrinologist would love to get her hands on something like this. I will be seeing her in a couple of weeks, I will bring this up to her.

Thank you very much for your time Steve, I like to start the week with you, I know that is not easy for you to do the video podcast but be sure that we appreciate the thoughts you share. I live in a country in Europe and the regulations here and the nutritional information in the labels are different. Also here we don't have so many keto processed products, I always say that keto here is going to the supermarket and make the right choice, then cook.

An even more interesting study would be a cross over where participants switch diet after 30 days, including a rest period in between to avoid one diet affecting the other. This would cover the fact that you have the aame participants in both.

Yes! STEVE: How about a brief series of “lessons”? You could cover the basics in a clear and interesting manner! There is a book by that title, How to Lie with Statistics, by Darrell Huff. It was published back in the 70s. It is an easy read and should be read by all! At the very least, EVERYONE should know the basic concepts around sample size, standard deviation, confidence, interval, mean, median, and mode, and relative versus absolute risk.

Re: food dyes. How about getting people accustomed to more natural looking foods. Re: My Plate. I did an estimate of the number of carbs found on MyPlate meals for a day. (I used an average of 11 commonly consumed vegetables and fruits and 3 different grains, so it is likely that the total amount could really be considerably higher, since I think that the lower carb fruits, vegetables and grains fall in the the common but not frequently consumed area) If followed, MyPlate would provide 176g of total carbs (considered grains, fruits, vegetables and 1% dairy only) Obviously, this doesn’t count ingredients in dishes where sugars are added various forms for flavor. e.g. muffins, pies…. The protein content would amount to roughly 50-60g. Considering my age and weight, that’s about 1/2 of my daily requirement. Calories were too complex to estimate since specific foods vary greatly from each other in the same category, likely because fat content varies widely. What I have deduced is that most people would likely be rather hungry unless they stuck to the higher calorie items in each category. As MyPlate cautions against higher fat options, I found it lacking in every area: too many carbs (for me), too little protein and calories.

In the UK/EU, they have very strict regulations about using artifical ingredients. "Big Food" makes the SAME FOOD for them with natural ingredients, but forces us to eat the food with BS ingredients. Why?! (HINT: fake ingredients are cheaper.) I wish there was away to get the same food rules as Europe has, sooner, rather than later.
@SeriousKeto
@SeriousKeto 12 күн бұрын
There are some EU food regulations that we could definitely benefit from here in the US. The one I'd like to see first is for us to adopt their nutritional labeling. Get rid of the ridiculous "per serving" macros that are so easy to manipulate and list them "per 100g" and/or "per package".

Wow, the MyPlate has tones of a recent convo I had w/my cardiologist. After saying how thrilled he was w/my A1C (4.5 down from 6.8), no longer being insulin resistant, & over 70# of weight loss…he closed our appointment saying I need to find a balanced menu, since Keto or Ketovore are used ONLY for a short period of time to jump start a weight loss. Discouraging, as he’s been my Dr for 20 yrs. I’d love to get more ideas for meals, as I am getting in a rut. Thanks, Steve!

Glad you addressed these specialty foods labels. Lesson to learn. Yes always read the label. Kinda not sure what these future podcast meals episodes might be but I like when you demo a recipe cause I always get ideas from them As for the dyes in foods, before they were presented food was basically all the same colors accept sons where browner than others Brits seems to like well charred foods and it was brought here with them. My family’s also runs where there’s a lot of pickled ingredients used So ya they take the trash dyes away! But what’s its replacement you know the medical and pharmaceutical communities will quickly find replacements for lost revenue

While a serving of grains is in cups that is using a volume measure not meaning a serving is actually 1 cup. I taught a diabetes education class a number of years ago and a serving of cooked brown rice is 1/3 cup. A serving of cornbread is a 1-3/4 inch cube and a serving of potatoes is 1/2 cup. Who on a SAD or even a type 2 diabetic that follows the suggested diet actually eats 1/3 cup of brown rice for a serving? My guess would be a serving is at least 1 cup. It was laughable to suggest 1/2 cup of cooked pasta was a serving. I couldn't stand the protocol being taught so I quit. It always amazes me that they think drugs need colorings in them. Great content today, Steve.

If I had the wealth to back it, I would fund that study. I read some medical research study papers some 10 years ago. Two of the studies were very interesting; one from UK and another one in Netherlands concerning obese individuals versus average sized individuals that never gain weight. They were given the same diet based on commonly known healthy food. The average sized individuals lost weight but the obese group gained weight. 😮 This study fostered the idea of varying metabolism.

Being Canadian and having universal healthcare I find that the government should have more of a vested interest in in what goes into food. The independent insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies don’t profit off of helping clean up the food industry. They a ton of money because people pay more. We pay for healthcare through taxes and I must say it’s a load off your worries. It is not perfect but our food is a little cleaner and could always be better. We can’t even get keto chow here because of ingredients ( I think it was too much potassium,not positive) so not saying it perfect but it is work in progress. 🇨🇦

The issue, at least here in the US, is that when the government is involved in any sort of food regulation, it's often due to one of the big political lobbies (food, pharma, agriculture, insurance) rather than an actual concern for health.

Combination, red sugar, sugar and eggs even like cake, made my son drunk; could not walk strait anymore , crying, sweating; even in my whom it was already clear that my son was sensitive to melk for instance and even some vegetables because they made me sick oversuddenly … so I learned to read labels early on. It was hard to convince family and friends 😢 time after time I had to ask; what did you give them and see how he reacts ; sorry that there were no mobile phones then; I could have bombarded them with video’s 😅 After his birth food allergies stayed with me also, so we all did the same diet; there was hardly any sugerfree, so I learned to make candy, chocolate etc invented some wheels too. In 35 years my son overgrew most intolerances , I didn’t. With december I fell off the wagon but stepped back in. I feel better with keto and making things myself. 🙏🧸🍀

Note that a lot of red meat used to be treated so that it stays red... The oxygen that binds with the hemoglobin and myoglobin, is not strongly bound, and slowly gets released and the meat turns grey. Some places blast the meat with carbon monoxide, which strongly binds with the hemoglobin and myoglobin, keeping it red. Not enough Carbon monoxide to poison a person, as it is already bound to the beef hemoglobin/myoglobin and is not easily released (which is why it kills people... it binds 5000 times stronger to those molecules than oxygen does).

I don’t think it is going to be any challenge at all for the food industry to give up Red 3. It has been banned for decades for food use in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, with a notable exception: maraschino cherries. The dye, a petroleum-based additive, has been used to give candy, soda, snack, cakes, maraschino cherries and other products their vibrant cherry red hue. It is used in foods, dietary supplements, and oral medications, like cough syrup. Although Red 3 is still used in hundreds of products, many companies have been switching to other food colorings, a move that accelerated after California in 2023 became the first state to ban Red 3 along with three other food additives linked to disease. In its place they,use beet juice; carmine, a dye made from insects; and pigments from foods such as purple sweet potato, radish, and red cabbage, according to Sensient Food Colors, a US-based supplier of food colours and flavourings. Under federal rules, the F.D.A. is prohibited from approving food additives that cause cancer in humans or animals, rats in this case. The dye has also been linked to health concerns for children. Consumer advocates said the F.D.A.’s decision to revoke the authorization was long overdue, given the FDA’s decision in 1990 to ban the chemical for use in cosmetics and topical drugs. In regards to food dye. I see absolutely no reason we need food to be aesthetically pleasing. I don’t need something strawberry flavor to be bright red.

I've been doing keto for 4 years and I still cannot lower my blood pressure. I went to a specialist, but she was not interested in finding the root cause. Next I'm going to a more natural, holistic or homeopathic practice.

Another misleading area is the new KETO cookbooks on the market. After looking through many keto cookbooks for recipes I have found that many of the recipes have carb counts that are way above a daily allowance of carbs. I am confused it seems to me that any recipe that has at least two days of carbs for one serving (and I am talking net, the total carbs are outrageous) should not be considered keto and if a cookbook has 50% non keto recipes it should not say KETO COOKBOOK.

I've been seeing a lot of obviously AI generated "keto" recipes on the internet. The pictures are clearly not real and when you look at the ingredients, it's pretty obvious that it wasn't made by a human who actually does keto.

imagine if we have just been interpreting things wrong and the reason they say you need more processed cheese is because it has less nutrition over regular cheese. as if the reason for them saying you need so many grains is because you need 7 servings minimum to get any amount of nutrition. would be a little funny i think

If I were a project manager for household repairs, I would take the amount of time I expect it to take and number of trips I expect to make to the hardware store and multiply them both by 3. And that's being optimistic. 😉

The Food Pyramid/My Plate has already shown results whether directly or indirectly. Compare the disease rate (or even obesity or Diabetes Type 2 populations) from the 1970s (or before) to current records. While food cannot be proven to 60 % of more of diseases directly, food is a major contributor! For non-believers all they need to do is do one month of Keto and check their own results. The non-believers typically come back with - but do not know the long term results of Keto. But today's state of diseases should show the Food Pyramid/My Plate is not a positive, and add the fact that many doctors recommend the Mediterranean diet says a lot about the American nutrition standards.

I always reply, "but we know the effect of the standard American diet" and then list the stats on obesity and type 2 diabetes over the last 50 years. It's funny how a way of eating that was considered normal for over 99% of human history is now a dangerous "fad".
