Imagine Cronenberg directing "Babe". During the "That'll do pig" scene, the pig would turn inside out while the farmers eyes would explode.

If you see any of the interviews with the cast and crew of Videodrome; the original script that got James Woods, Debbie Harry, and Rick Baker (SFX specialist on the film, same guy who did the SFX on American Werewolf in London.) interested in doing the project, was far more insane and strange than the final product we ended up getting. Cronenberg was re-writing the script as they were filming. Re-writing scenes sometimes as they were filming them, or the week and day before. The making of Videodrome is a really interesting story. I highly recommend picking up the Criterion Collection version, as the extras on the Blu-ray (the version I bought) really delve into how chaotic the process was, and you would never know it when you watch the film. Videodrome is a classic and was absolutely ahead of it's time. It was also prescient in many ways about the future of TV, and video entertainment. Some of the lines in the film, like Brian O'Blivion mentions that one day we will all be going by different names, like stage names. Oh, how right he was. He just didn't know it would be on the internet rather than TV. There are so many of these little moments that just sets Videodrome apart from many of its contemporaries.

When the TV pulsates, I get flashbacks to when I used to do shrooms. Crazy shit, very accurate to what happens. Everything looks like it's breathing. I even remembering doing a 4g trip, BIG MISTAKE. Don't ever do an ego death unless less you plan ahead of time. That's the trip where you hallucinate proper, I'm talking faces and eyes appearing from nowwhere screaming at you, fractal colors cascade and boom in your peripheral like an ocean of light. My sister was so mad when I overdid it😂😩. But yeah, will never do it again, maybe when I'm older and more responsible and with friends, but right now, hell no...

I always assumed there was a pretty decent chance that the hallucinations weren't hallucinations at all. The idea behind the titular videodrome is that it's a reality beyond reality. It has the power to give Max cancer and make him undergo visionary experiences. It's possible he truly did need to forego his mortal meat form to give birth to the new flesh.
