I used to literally never listen to actual music. My entire family bullied me for listening to video game music outside of video games. I haven’t watched this video yet, but video game music delivers something that normal songs can’t. In video game osts, there are usually no lyrics, and you can enjoy the song for the music, and it’s always masterfully put together. It’s not just like a beat put together with some lyrics. I have now grown to also not hate regular music lol, but I love both of them equally for the individual things they deliver.

i think the biggest problem is that we aren't being specific. Most people probably think about '80 arcade/Atari songs when you say "video game music". Most discrimination comes from not being educated and being told false information. What we need to do is to not specify where the song comes and give video game specific styles their own name (chiptune, orchestra, etc..)

I would give up my music degree before giving up video game music. It has such a special place in my heart, along with film music. The Undertale soundtrack in particular has some of the greatest music ever composed.

This is beautiful. I feel so seen. It was actually really important for my wife to accept my love of video game music when we started dating. I still listened to other music but my vgms vastly overshadowed the others. She was hesitant and still doesn’t care for the chiptunes but after listening to the likes of Origami King, Octopath Traveler, Lacrimosa of Dana, Trials of Mana and many more she totally gets why it’s so beloved. I love video game music. It’s great for brainstorming or just getting lost in the music. ❤

What’s interesting about Undertale’s OST is that some of its tracks where used on other games, most notably Megalovania, which Toby Fox originally made for his EarthBound rom hack kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3rSqKqQic18jq8feature=shared

I feel like this video is trying to counter arguments that never existed. The things about people that hate video game music is that none of them are knowledgeable enough of what makes good music to critique video game music. The result is overwhelming disrespect with no reasoning backing it.
@YoursTruely5 ай бұрын
Every time someone argues for videogame music being valid (which, don't get me wrong, I fully agree that videogame music is good & valid) it always ends up being less about videogame music being valid and more about the elitism of whoever's arguing for videogame music - and I think that's where this entire videogame music vs mainstream music debate comes from. I won't try to say that the claims you bring up against videogame music don't exist per se, but I've never seen any of these arguments made during these discussions, what I have always seen instead is an attempt to punch down and claim superiority from whoever is arguing for videogame music - and that extends to this video. I personally think that's why this entire debate exists, hostility from one side and counter hostility from the other. It could be that I'm absolutely incorrect and I just haven't seen the people fighting to make videogame music seem invaluable, but it could also be that you're analyzing a handful of people as if they're the vast majority of people who listen to music. I dunno, just my two cents.

This second comment isn't me trying to shit on you or be an asshole, it just further pushes my argument, but like You verbatim said "shitting on modern music is not my main goal" and then ended your next segment with "videogame music surpassed other forms in quality and originality" - which not only is misplaced in a segment about the validity of synths and digital instruments, but is an absolutely ridiculous statement considering videogame music isn't a genre, but rather most songs in videogames are just songs of their genre being used within videogames; PERSONA 5 MUSIC IS JAZZ MUSIC NOT PERSONA 5 TYPE BEATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

of course "videogame music" isn't going to get treated like "real music" if you use a term this broad, if anything you like instrumental music over music with lyrics (i do too, mostly) but game music has its own genres

I feel as if you have a very shallow understanding of modern music as a whole. You see, it's a lot more nuanced and rich than many would think. The video suggests there are 3 music genres 1. classical with its subgenres 2. 'degenerate' modern music (and can we please move on from using nazi rhetoric when saying we don't like something or that it grosses us out) 3. video game OSTs It's not a very open-minded perspective, since the whole video, while not explicitly stating that, suggests video game OSTs to be the sole 'beacon of hope' in the cesspit of shitty music. Let me also preface that I love a lot of video game OSTs, the Undertale Soundtrack, or the Ultrakill score absolutely slap, while not really vibing with Ice Spice or Taylor Swift, it's, however, very unfair to assume OSTs are one of the only good music out there. Downright stating that video game OSTs are the only ones that have meaning behind their instrumental parts is downright insulting to such a broad thing as 'modern music'. There are and were so many artists who tell stories through their music, while yes, the genre of 'pop' can definitely feel as if they make their instrumentals to just sound cool to an average viewer, but I suppose that's what it's supposed to be like, since as the name of the genre suggests, it's meant to be popular with people who don't really know much about music and just listen to whatever's on the radio. But there is more to it and it's so much more nuanced. Not everything that's not video game OSTs is consumerist horseshit just as not every video game OST is a simple samey 8-bit melody repeated over and over again. Generalization is hurtful and narrowing to our perspectives, just as you're not likely to listen to music outside your comfort zone, because you might think modern music consists of only Taylor Swift, Doja Cat or Ice Spice, another person is not likely to listen to video game OSTs, because they may believe it only consists of the Super Mario Bros Theme Song or the Pac-Man Theme. If you want beautiful, orchestral compositions that are also emotional and near perfectly crafted, look no further than the album Days Of Future Passed by the Moody Blues. Want something strictly instrumental with a darker tone, check out The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation album Anthropomorphic. Looking for something sadder, check out ANYTHING by the British Sea Power. Want something heavy-hitting and with bizarre lyrics, check out 88kasyo junrei and so on and so on. We should all broaden our perspectives in terms of music, so we can find more awesome bangers that absolutely FUCK. For example - I hated rap music for the longest time, mainly because of how it mainly focuses on vocals, which I never found too interesting, since I'm a sucker for some instrumentals. I decided to give the album Igor, by Tyler, the Creator and holy shit I can't get it out of my head, which has opened me to way more artists in the genre. While I still don't consider myself a big liker of Rap as a whole, I can definitely appreciate the artistry in many of the musicians and how much they put into creating both their lyrics and their beats. There's, however, one thing I agree within the video. It's that Taylor Swift's music is VERY BAD, not only to mention her ATROCIOUS FLIGHT RECORDS FROM HER PRIVATE JET. Anyway, take care, sorry for the long comment, peace and love, have a good one 🙏🙏
