Really good video about how you size (height and weight) make a big difference in how your skateboarding is going to "feel". How the wheelbase and the truck geometry can affect how your going to "feel" your skateboard. I have also noticed with bushing, as a heavier guy I need really hard bushing because I would regularly destroy the medium bushing that came with my trucks. Also getting taller trucks (with a riser) really helped reducing the wheel bite.

6'2" 240 lbs size 11.5 shoe My set up is: Board: Anti Hero 8.38x32 , 14.5 wheelbase ( I like 8.5s too) Trucks: Venture Low 5.3 or 149mm on the Indy scale Wheels: Spitfire 53mm f4 Classics Bushings: Bones Hard, I like my trucks to feel tighter, but with my weight I still can turn pretty easily Bearings: Lucky abec 5, someday when these croak I'll move up tosome Bones Reds I ride mostly park and dry canals. I can still do flip tricks, definitely more of a challenge with double flips on flat

first off I wanna say, I´m a beginner, I skate 3 months now and I´m 1.95 tall, 165 pounds. At first I thought my board couldnt be big enough for me, but now I really think that you will learn on any board, doesnt matter which size. its so much fun trying out new stuff: I got my very first board 3 months ago and learned alot on it. its 8.38 with steep concave and 14.20 wheelbase. just recently I stood on someones elses 8 with low concave and it actually felt pretty good, small, but very agile and super easy to pop. I´m now thinking about buying a 8.1 and an 8.5 just to try them both and see what sticks. its very easy for me to lose myself in technicalities, happens all the time, if I´m not worrying about the width or the length, I´m probably thinking about the concave, or the size of my trucks and wheels ... that can be fun, but it gets exhausting quickly, so remember to just go out and skate on whatever board you can get your hands on!

update: I bought myself an 8 and it feels amazing, I have less space for my feet, but the small size and light weight make it very responsive and easy to turn, I love it.

Yeah I really think I like my 8.45" and 8.5" boards best, compared to a 7.6" and 8.0". The 8.5" Santa Cruz Everslick is a pretty heavy deck for me, but it's steeper concave and steep tail/nose actually makes it somehow nicer to ride. It flips fine, even when I'm a total beginner. I kind of can double flip the Andy Anderson deck too, even when I can't land 'em. So the flatness doesn't bother me at all. I _definitely_ recommend trying out different trucks. For me it was a world a difference having Tensor Mag Light trucks on 'em, instead of heavier Venture trucks. It rides a lot different now, even when I probably can't pop as high as I used to before, as the Tensor Mag Light trucks are low trucks. I might experiment with high trucks that are lightweight sometime on the Andy board (if it survives that long).

With the Andy Anderson board I took a page out of the Michael Relevant playbook and put Thunder 161s on it. My ideal wheel with it was the 54mm Spitfire Lock-ins. Feels so good on my feet. Also this video is super super helpful. I like how height and weight are discussed.

The big thing with board size and shape is the Gimmick Factor... what failed years ago became the norm over time as new generation sk8rs came in and didn't know that it was a failed gimmick design from the past and fell for it 😮.... And notice that everything is getting away from the popsicle stick and the Little wheel back to shape decks and full size wheels and skateboarding is actually gaining speed again because it was chumped down horribly in the early nineties.... It was becoming hopscotch everything was slower than I walk 😂😂😂😂..... Great video 👍

the typical board or "industry standard" for a 6' (72") guy is 8x32. 32" is based on an inseam of 32"... for every 1" of board height, that's 2.25" of person. the equivalent of that same body ratio to board for a 5'5" guy like myself with a 29" inseam is a 29.3" long deck. that basically means that in order to have the same exact leverage that a 6' tall guy can get out of a 8x32 where they're able to slide the front foot up with minimal effort to cradle into the nose for the easy pop, i'd need a 29.3" deck. yeah shorter guys can still skate the same size boards and we've been doing it the entire time, but there's literally a ton more effort required because the industry doesn't support this sizing. in fact the industry seems to believe it doesn't matter (ccs no longer even lists the lengths on decks), which is stupid considering the nose is angled up specifically to have your front foot slide, grab, and lift up. what size board should you ride? whatever width fits your shoe size best and divide your height in inches by 2.25 to get your length. the industry needs to change. we need more decks in the 30" length. as for wheelbase, set it to how you like your pop.
@ramrunsfast
@ramrunsfast 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting perspective that I've never heard about. If that is the case wouldn't it depend what type of terrain you ride. I just bought a Steve Caballero board that is 31.9" based on your math equation it seems for Cabs height he would need a board length of 27.55". If you could further explain your numbers and show some skating before and after with the adjustment I would be curious. I know wheelbase plays a huge role in how heavy or light a board will feel. But now I'm curious about overall board length.

If you wanna just cruise and skate on rough ground I reccomend getting softer wheels and the bigger the wheel the easier it goes over rough ground. Wheel hardness is measured in durometer so 99-101a is pretty hard and mainly for skate parks and smooth ground. If you get some 78a wheels or under 90a you should be able to cruise nice and smooth on crusty ground😊

Hey man, I thought I'd weigh in here because I've just started skating again at 28 and I'm 6"4 with a size 11 shoe. When I skated properly (12 years ago for around 6 years), I skated anything between 7.75 and 8.0. I was a little shorter (and younger) back then, but I just got myself an 8.0 inch setup anyway and I've had nothing but regret since. My riding/basic tricks have come along a lot in the last three weeks, but I really wish I had bought a 8.375 - 8.5 board because I tried an 8.5 and it felt so much more comfortable whilst still being able to flip. If you want to learn fliptricks eventually, I would avoid anything over 8.5 personally. I would also invest in a sturdy set of trucks like Independent 149s (if you get a deck between 8.25 and 8.75). I used to ride indies for years in my teens and never had any trouble. The tensor alloy trucks im skating now don't seem as consistent in turning and go a bit crazy at high speed.

Whatever board you like. I'm 5 ft 6, but I love big 10.0 old school decks. There is no such thing as a correct size board it's just you're preference. I've seen big dudes skate 7.75 decks and I've seen small dudes like kader sylla for example skating 8.75-9.0 decks. You can do any style of skating with any size deck but keep in mind the bigger the deck the harder it is to do really technical tricks on. Just pick a board you think looks cool and play around with different sizes you will get a feel of what you like

8 1/2 normal size? I would have to disagree. There are many factors...weight and size being one of them, or if you want to do more flatland...7.75 has been the norm for me when skating street as the board flips so easy. I move up to an 8 when skating ramps, but never felt the need to go bigger. Its personal preference

Poor analogy EVERYONE prefers a knife that is fast to deploy, needs no thought to put to task, lasts longer .. there is a reason multi blade old timer knives that need thought to deploy, are slow, degrade faster are NOBODYS EDC unless the laws where they are force it on them. The smaller the board you learn things on the more precise and better technique you will have. So if you want a trick on lock long term go small enough it challenges you. Bonus is better turning which is vital on the street unless you're a juvenile ass-egoist. While learning less likely to do the splits or body by getting planted on board while balance off. More likely to stress ankles as foot half off or so far to one side the board angles and stalls. I prefer an ankle sprain to a hammy or body and if you ride enough your ankles will be strong enough to bounce back. 6+ cruising 7.5+ tricks 8.375+ stairs 8.5+ bowls 9+ ramps and now surf skates
