The Message in a Bottle battle is, to me, how the Defiant class and Akira class are meant to operate; the Akira acting as a lead battleship dumping torpedoes at anything that gets in its way while the Defiant’s swarm opponents. A “hell yes please” to reenacting that battle. It also gives a good idea of how the Prometheus would fit in; either as an extra battleship or adding to the angry swarm.

The proper tactic against any torpedo boat is to get in as close as possible and inside its torpedo envelopes. Torpedo destroyers or cruisers are not designed to be brawlers, but to maintain stand-off and volley their torpedoes. So good job!

The Akira: A ship so nice they used it twice It hits so far above its weight class that you have to kind of wonder why Starfleet didn't have more ships with a similar design philosophy. Could you imagine something the size of an Oddysey-class that was as equally focused on torpedoes as an Akira?

Two things: 1- That wall display showcasing the Norway class on DS9 is a DEEP cut, and I love it! 2- The Norway, Steamrunner, and Deiant were all created around roughly the same time to be part of a new battle fleet. I believe you've tried Steamrunner vs Norway before, but have you tried a combination of the two against a Defiant class? I feel like the Defiant would still come out on top, what with its ablative armor and quantum torpedoes. Still, it might be interesting to see how that battle plays out.

I remember once in All Good Things in TNG, that the Romulans sent 30 warbirds to the Neutral Zone border. In one area was four of those warbirds, and Starfleet decided to meet those four ships by having two vessels meet up with the Enterprise to match the four warbirds. Normally, that sounds *somewhat* fair (the word 'somewhat' is doing a lot of heavy lifting there), but this was before the Battle of Sector 001, before the debut of the Defiant, before Voyager, and definitely before the Sovereign class, and so before we got the big expansion of ship classes and weapons technology. One of those ships was the Bozeman, which is probably the same ship as Captain Frasier Crane's, just with modern upgrades and refits; the class of the other ship wasn't said, but the encyclopedia posits that it could be of the single-nacelle Freedom Class, so it's not yet confirmed either way. The other ship *could* be another Galaxy or a Nebula, but considering the ships we saw the most often (including the Excelsior, Constellation, Ambassador, and Miranda -- and god forbid, the Oberth), matching *one* of those ships up against a single Warbird seemed to be a death sentence. The Enterprise-D was Starfleet's biggest gun in the fleet at the time, but a single Warbird was its equivalent, and there were 4 warbirds. So the Romulans had the equivalent of 4 Galaxy Class ships, and Starfleet had 1 Galaxy Class and two likely-far weaker ships (probably even worse if it really was a Freedom Class). Even in the best case scenario of two Galaxies and the Bozeman, Starfleet sent a *huge* mismatch in power that would have been easily wiped out by the Romulans. The writers, it seems, didn't think through the severe power gap between the Warbird and the more common Starfleet vessels at the time. Or maybe Starfleet admirals continue to be terrible at this sort of thing.

In-universe, a reason we didn't see them in DS9 could be that Starfleet canceled the Norway class and shifted construction to the Akira class after discovering (through usage) that the Norway class were just too constraining of a space frame and the Akira class proving themselves to just be a better implementation of resources. So only the initial batch of ships built existed, with a good number of them being destroyed at the battle of sector 001.

Norway was meant to operate in tandem with Akira as fast attack hit and run, not sluggers. While the Akiria's stayed back at range and pummeled borg cubes with them spicey glowing balls of doom. but I would wonder if an Akira could take 5 at once since the Norways all run type 10 phaser
@terryroraus14 күн бұрын
The difference comes primarily in the classification of the two ships. The Norway classes are medium cruisers. They can take a beating and dish one back out, but if they're up against anything heavier, they're likely to be outclassed. What bothers me though is that the Norway is supposed to be equipped with 6 Type-10 Phaser Arrays, but the version we have here seems to only be equipped with two, though the two torpedo launchers are accurate (one fore, one aft). Now, talking about the Akira, it too is supposed to have the six type-10 arrays (meaning phaser power should be equal), but in alpha canon, it's not the torpedo boat we've become so fond of. There's also meant to be 2 torpedo launchers on it (from the DS9 Tech Manual), though in Beta canon, it is the powerhouse we see here (from Starship Spotters), having 15 torpedo tubes. Realistically, 2 Norways should equal 1 Akira, as they're also meant to be powered by the same warp core. There may be a moderate deviation in shield strength due to the size difference, but not enough that 5 advanced photons should shred the shields to collapse. Now I'm not saying there was some Peak Performance wargame sabotage going on... but there was some Peak Performance wargame sabotage going on.

BTW as a one time fan of Tom Clancy novels I often confuse Akira with the Soviet/Russian word "Akula" which means "shark" and was the NATO name for a formidable class of fast attack submarine much like this Akira class torpedo centric starship.

@@kwaktak I think there are TMP Akira variants in STO (as yet not in BC), though a pair of TOS-era Akira-like ships are in BC. And on the Akula, in Trek fandom a popular destroyer/frigate design is the Akula Class, generally two nacelles (one above and one below) the saucer. BC has a variety of these that fans made over the years, from TOS to TMP to 25th Century, to Lost Era variants (the Vengeance), Terran Empire, and more

Wonder why they've never considered having a dedicated replicator for torpedoes? Would save space and they'd never run out. And why has no one ever thought of energy absorbing shields? When an enemy fires, the shields absorb that energy and use it to boost said shields, even the weapons. That would be a game changer (no pun intended).

The Norway class looks like it is suffering from the same "won't be here till Tuesday" affliction that hampered the 1701-B. That negative space between those nacelle struts looks like it is begging for a mission pod to be slotted in, but unfortunately, it seems as if the Great Material Continuum faced a hiccup from Space Beavers and was unable to answer the "All hands on deck!" call to defend Earth in its complete and intended form.

That's VenomGeek's take on it. He's a decent analyst, but he pulled the phaser lance out of his ass to shoehorn the Norway into his headcanon of how the Sector 001 fleet operates; there is no canon evidence, alpha or beta, to support his claim.
@chriselliottart14 күн бұрын
Somehow, I also remember from decades ago something about the Norway having a phaser lance where the deflector is now. So from my understanding I think the Norway Class is suppose to have a lance phaser of some kind pointing forward. Each ship in the anti-borg line was suppose to be specialized/had its own role in anti-borg engagements which unfortunately wasn't utilized on the Norway's part. Now I could be thinking of a different ship since the steamrunner was also apparently made to be a torpedo ship but if that's the case why does it exist when we have an akira.
