a5hun, thanks for telling us, right near the end, which of the monitors you've reviewed is your favourite. Your reviews are excellent, even if I don't understand many of the technicalities myself. So a final "and my favourite is monitor is..." moment comes in real handy for those wanting to buy something. Personally, I'm stuck, with no idea what to buy, but eventually I'm sure you'll review something which ticks ~most~ of the boxes for me. (I thought the LG 27GL850 reviewed by others could be it, but I think I'd squirm just seeing the red accents on the stand / shroud... and then there's the contrast ratio issue, and the "mere compatibility" with G-Sync rather than full implementation.) Despite tonnes of options, I can't bring myself to actually buy anything, and so just use a sh*#ty retired monitor which I hate from a former workplace, while I wait for "the perfect" monitor... which might never even arrive.

@@dynastes4938 How important is it? I think it has some kind of overdrive.
@dynastes49384 жыл бұрын
@@IS-vy2yh Pretty much every LCD uses overdrive. How important it is to have that overdrive being variable depends on how well overdrive is implemented. In the case of LGs 27GL850 the implementation is quite good so you will not get significant artifacts even with the refresh rate dropping to 60 Hz during adaptive sync usage. There are worse examples, though. Asus did quite a bad job with their VG27AQ for example. Measurements are to be found at tftcentral.co.uk oder on the channel Hardware Unboxed.

I'm coming from benq tn with 1ms gtg 144hz so i was skeptical about the input delay.. I have to say... With gsync enabled, i believe aw2721d is the only certified gsync ultimate 2k 240hz monitor at the moment?... I am getting ZERO input lag. I love it. Looks so clean. One day when I'm not working 12 hours I'll try it without the gsync and see if i get a delay.. But what for really since gsync is working flawlessly.. my only gripe. Is the backlight bleed... It's not horrible... I've adjusted the settings to 70 brightness and 75 contrast for resident evil 2 and tarkov. It's in the left corners and is only a minor gripe. I rate it a 95. -5 for the backlight bleed... Thank you, thank you all for joining me here today.

This was super informative, good job. I am literally deciding between this monitor, the VG27AQ and the 27GL850-B. A few people had talked about the BLB and it really seems like you have to play the lotto for a good screen on the Viewsonic. I am not sure it is worth it for me but do think that this monitor has some good features over the other. Out of the three, would you ultimately recommend the VG27AQ for someone who games 65% of the time, video edits 30% of the time and the remainder just surfs? I am having a lot of trouble deciding between them. I was able to look at the Asus and LG in person today at my local store and I had to say I liked the Asus color quality more. I played with the settings a little but it still looked better to me on the Asus. However, most people say color is better on the LG so it was confusing. (Just tested a few 4k color videos) Any advice would be appreciated.
@ApertureGrille4 жыл бұрын
The ViewSonic is too expensive. True G-Sync is nice, but I don't think it's $200 better than the ASUS or the LG. I don't have the 27GL850, but it's the same panel as the ViewSonic, so response times should be quite good. But have you considered the 27GL83A? Same panel without the red phosphor for extended gamut. For video editing, almost everyone who is going to be watching your videos is watching in the sRGB color space, so the 850's wide color gamut (I think that's what people are talking about with the "better" colors thing) isn't much benefit, and it may actually hurt. The 27GL83A: +Very good response times for an IPS -Low contrast -No backlight strobing mode VG27AQ: +Much better contrast +Backlight strobing -OK response times (except for 79 Hz to 100 Hz, see note below) -Top-left two pixels are copies of bottom-right two pixels (hope this gets fixed in the upcoming VG27AQL1A) I'm buying all these monitors, and as a CRT guy, I don't want to purchase something without backlight strobing, so that's why I'm typing this reply looking at the VG27AQ, but I really don't think you'd be disappointed with either. Take a look at my newest video on the Acer KG271U for why the ASUS isn't as bad as people are saying.

Awesome review, thanks. I have two very specific questions: -Considering what you mention about ULMB: Do you think the LG UltraGear 27GL850-B (the same panel but 100 dollars cheaper) is a better option? -What do you think of GIGABYTE AORUS FI27Q-P? Do you consider it a better option. I really want to buy the best 2k 144 - 165hz IPS panel, regardless of the price, but I am quite hesitant with so many recent models. You have a new subscriber and I appreciate your opinion
@ApertureGrille4 жыл бұрын
The three models you're considering (XG270QG, 27GL850, and the FI27Q-P) are all extended gamut panels, meaning they have that red phosphor I mentioned in the review. Check out tftcentral's review of the Gigabyte AD27QD (same panel family as on the FI27Q-P): www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/gigabyte_aorus_ad27qd.htm Look in particular at their strobe crosstalk images, where you can see the same 'chromatic aberration' type effect I saw in the ViewSonic. I think LG was smart in not offering ULMB in their 27GL850. I don't have it to test, but the Gigabyte FI27Q-P is interesting. The Innolux panels seem to do better with contrast than the LG panels, but aren't quite as fast. The downside is that it costs more than the ViewSonic without having an actual G-Sync module. My review of the ViewSonic was a little soured by the back luck I had with the backlight bleed, but if you get a good panel, I doubt you'd be unhappy with it. But I'd suggest waiting at least a week or so until things fully shake out at CES 2020.

Unfortunately, I bought it from ViewSonic's store, which means I get to keep paying for shipping if I return them. Another guy on r/Monitors posted an image of his backlight bleed, and it's almost identical to mine, just a little bit better. I could have just been unlucky to receive a bad sample AND publish a review of it, but that's the risk ViewSonic runs if they're sending out panels that look like this.

Weird fact: The Viewsonic XG270 (non QG) has blurbusters approved motion blur reduction tools built in. When set at 120hz and calibrated it's easily one of the best, almost crosstalk free MBR experiences. Weird they didn't implement that here. Another weird thing: My Samsung VA (CFG73)'s strobing modes don't diminish contrast or brightness much at all... In fact, I wish the ''faster'' mode (with ''fastest'' being the most aggressive strobing) was a bit more dim since it's about equal to setting my monitor's brightness to like 85%... Why is Samsung's VA strobing so different from most others? It's also better than most ULMB implementations I've seen, especially in terms of crosstalk uniformity and retaining brightness and contrast.

@ApertureGrille4 жыл бұрын
Check 2:37 for all the color modes. Native was the default, and grayscale tracking was pretty bad, which you can see at 3:26. Bluish and Warm weren't worth talking about, but I checked sRGB, and the primaries are not clamped. I went back to the VG27AQ, with its standard gamut. If your work demands you bouncing between sRGB and P3, tftcentral showed the 27GL850 has a pretty good sRGB mode, so I'd probably opt for that one instead (you may have to wait for a lot of these monitors to come back in stock).

@@ApertureGrille thanks man! I bit the bullet today and bought the Asus VG27AQ since both LG's 27GL83A-B and 27GL850 are not available in my country. I've been weary of buying the monitor since almost everyone on reddit has been cautioning how terrible the response time is. Overall, I think the overshooting/ghosting has been greatly exaggerated & unless someone is very sensitive to these stuff like you are, VG27AQ is perfectly fine for the price.

I own this monitor and I wonder what graphics card you used when you reviewed it. I have a Nvidia 1080ti and I couldn't stand the LG gl850 (I returned it). The experience is much smoother with the Viewsonic and I don't know if it is the fact that one is true Gsync and the other Gsync compatible. I would love to know it, because if it was just my LG was defective and there's no real difference in gameplay experience (micro stuttering, etc.) between Gsync and Gsync compatible, I wouldn't pay the extra price for the Gsync module (and I still can return my monitor and try again with a Gsync compatible one).

The XG270QG and LG 27GL850 use the same panel, but the ViewSonic has a slightly higher max refresh (165 Hz) and ULMB, which it really shouldn't. These two (and the LG 27GL83A) have fast response at the expense of contrast. The ASUS, which I really like, is a bit slower, but has good contrast for an IPS (1100:1) and really accurate tracking of sRGB colors out of the box. You might have trouble finding any of these to purchase right now, though. Stock seems limited everywhere.

I game in my living room with my pc connected to a 65" LG OLED C8 (I'm a OLED fanboy) and decided I could let go of my contrast obsession for a pure g-sync experience on a smaller screen, purely for smooth high fps gaming. My viewsonic elite is on it's way arriving monday, this is one of the very first comprehensive reviews I have seen, under that criteria would you expect me to enjoy this monitor? Thank you so much if you drop a response, I've really been pinning over this and assume others are as well. Cheers!

I may have just been super unlucky with the panel lottery, but the backlight bleed on my sample really puts me off. I'm (as a CRT fanboy) also disappointed with the ULMB mode, but that's specific to me, I think. Other than that, I think you'll be pretty happy with the smooth, high-refresh rate gaming, but... you might be able to get close to this ViewSonic for less money. Once you get yours in, let us know what you think. I'm curious for the perspective of someone who is coming from OLED.

@@ApertureGrille Thank you kindly for the response, I absolutely will! I picked up my oled tv for a fantastic price on amazon prime day a few months back, I also have a 55" c7 oled going strong, few years no burn in even with pc monitor use. The lg c9 just got g-sync compatible certified, 4k oled 120hz vrr baby, so that hurt but I'll pick one up a year or two from now, I actually think it's an amazing option maybe consider reviewing that thechnology?

@@ApertureGrille also, never personally used ulmb so I won't personally notice it (and most likely other features lacking). I really like the design aesthetic compared to the lg 850 equivalent and want the best v-sync experience so the additional price does not bother me as at $600 usd I still think this is a reasonable price. But if there is just totally inexcusable blb as you unfortunately experienced with your unit I probably will return. I was also very interested in the auros 27" curved va 1440p monitor for considerably less and the fi27, the va panel has many negative unfortunately. Monitors... pc's most confusing component

What’s your opinion of 1440p 144hz vs. 1080p 240hz? I primarily game and I’m leaning toward the 1440p side (up to 165hz or so). I’m going to get a 2070 Super so, what monitor do you recommend?

The two most recent games I've played have been Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and The Outer Worlds, and I was frustrated with both not being able to hit 100+ FPS at times even with my 7700k at 4.7 GHz. The Outer Worlds was especially bad on the Groundbreaker, where I'd be maxing at 85 FPS with the GPU sitting at 70% usage. For many modern games, you can't expect them to reliably hit 160+ FPS without stuttering, hitching, frame pacing issues, etc. I wouldn't suggest a FHD 240 Hz monitor unless you primarily play CS:GO or maybe Overwatch, games you know can hit 200+.

@@ApertureGrille got it. so what model do you recommend the most out of all that you've tested so far?
@ApertureGrille4 жыл бұрын
@@jackdunlap4887 Unfortunately my KZbin channel is... tiny, so the only new monitors I've tested are the XG270QG and the ASUS VG27AQ. You can check out my review of the older BenQ GW2760HS to get an idea of why I'm not a fan of VA panels. But if it helps your current QHD IPS decision, I'm back to using the ASUS right now, and I'm really pleased with it, other than ELMB-Sync being worthless. But there are alternatives that I haven't looked at: the LG 27GL83A is the same panel as the ViewSonic without the red phosphor (seems to be out of stock everywhere), the LG 27GL850 (same panel with extended gamut, also out of stock), and there are also a slew of curved QHD Samsung VA panels under various brand names, but as I mentioned, I'm not too keen on VA. If you have a MicroCenter or Frys near you, drop by and take a look at some of the demo screens. It's not ideal because of all the overhead lighting, but it'll give you an idea of how the screens look. I doubt you'll be displeased with any of these monitors, but spending a ton of money right now doesn't make much sense.

@@ApertureGrille what is red phosphor and what are your opinions on monitor overclocking? I've decided on 1440p 144hz, just want to get a monitor that will last a while as I have been using the BenQ RL2455HM for many years now.

Thing is that those new 240Hz IPS have better performance even at 60-120Hz and according to Blurbusters post somewhere on youtube, ULMB at 120Hz is better on 240Hz monitor. a5hun can probably tell us why.

I think so. The ViewSonic is better built, but the price premium is too much.

ViewSonic v Razor Raptor v LG850 v Asus AD vs Acer Predator XB271HU (4yrs old but same specs?!!) These appear to be the top of heap sweet spot monitors Thin Bezel, 2k, 144hz, IPS, Sub 5ms Response Time.....Razor vs ViewSonic RGB implementation is probably the real question through!

Yeah, BlurBusters contacted me for permission to use some of my charts, but he did his own very good research into the issue, more than I was able to do. And BlurBusters has a larger audience than I do, so I'm glad he's getting the word out that these red phosphors will ruin blur reduction modes.

The ASUS VG27AQ I reviewed (I purchased that one as well) is actually pretty OK with the brightness turned down. It's still not amazing, but it does show that there really is a panel lottery with these monitors. If you're willing to play the return shuffle with Amazon, you could get one you could live with, but I really wish ViewSonic would do the work for us.

I really don't get why you put so much importance on its backlight strobing because the tradeoff is simply not worth it forgoing hardware G sync(no latency, variable overdrive, etc). There is motion blur but the response time(this is literally the fastest IPS panel right now) really mitigates it. I for one would rather have Gsync+brightness than better motion clarity, more input lag, and darkness. And i'm sure i speak on behalf of most gamers in this regard. This monitor's response time is fast enough to not need backlight strobing and motion blur reduction isn't really needed at the expense of more latency+tearing+less brightness+input lag
