I am very pleased to see this video has been posted. I have been looking at this monitor for a while now and it definitely had caught my attention. With your conclusion, I'll just have to wait and see if ViewSonic ends up bringing the price down because I do like the included attachments and build, but you've always helped us understand how much of a good monitor the LG27GL850 is. I'll take some more time to figure it out. Thank you for working on this as always!

Thanks very much for your in depth monitor reviews Tim. I had my eye on this monitor a few weeks back as an upgrade from my Acer XB271HU, mainly because it boasted the faster LG panel and had a G-Sync module installed. However, seeing your review confirmed what I had been reading recently, that this monitor has pretty terrible contrast compared to other IPS offerings and that it can't get close to the claimed "1ms" without significant overshoot. Given the fact that it's only able to reach 5.5ms at best without overshoot, I don't think I'd notice the difference going from my Acer. Backlight bleed has been a common complaint with this Viewsonic monitor too, though unsurprisingly most review samples have been fine. I do have one request though, could you add either the Acer XB271HU, ASUS PG279Q or any of the other variants from AOC, Viewsonic and Dell that use the same AUO 165Hz 1440p IPS panel to your test charts? I know these displays aren't new, but I think this panel has by far been one of the most popular 1440p high refresh rate displays of the last few years and it would be great to have the data in your reviews to draw a comparison from since so many of us have this panel or will be considering it when looking to buy.

These reviews are simply a joy to watch, I never get tired of them :) Great work! I must say, though, that I am severely disappointed by this monitor, albeit on a high level. I think one could reasonably expect Viewsonic to tune the middle overdrive setting in a more proficient way in order to get the best out of the panel. Sure, those performance differences are small, but with a G-Sync module in particular it should be well possible to have no overshoot at 60 Hz while getting the best possible performance at 165 Hz. This monitor is 800 € in my region and I considered it until just now - but frankly it had to do pretty much perfectly in Tim's testing (aside from known weaknesses such as contrast) to be worth that surplus. It's a shame, too, since general adaptive sync support on a G-Sync module is a pretty attractive quality which very few models can currently offer. I would jump on that for US pricing to be sure. But for this kind of money … nah, that is just not reasonable enough. Get it together, Viewsonic!

I have this monitor. Was happy to pay the extra 100 for g-syn (especially for the 3000 cards coming out), and the rgb is still a nice touch. The headphone hanger and mouse anchor are also handy. Pretty good upgrades imo.

Personally I find the 1080p version of this monitor (XG270) more interesting since it got Blur Busters seal of approval. If that is Blur Busters selling out (which I highly doubt) , I wish them the best, they deserve a good payday after helping to advance the levels of discernment in monitor consumers.

Thank you for this review! I have to say the monitor looks beautiful! Very well designed also the stand. You can easily but a keyboard on top to make some space on the desk. But what is keeping me from buying is the same problem the LG has and that is contrast. Since I play often in the dark and also do photo editing I'm worried about this. So could you do me a big favor and have a look on the aoc ag273qx soon? A new 27 inch 1440p VA display with 165hz. I'm very interested in the performance of this monitor but couldn't find a good review yet.

I ended up going with the nixeus EDG34 ultrawide. It’s the cheapest decent 1440p ultrawide and considering even the MUCH more expensive ones I was originally planning on really aren’t _that_ much better until the $2-2.5k range (and nothing is perfect atm) I’m glad I did. 1ms is the time it takes from input to frame draw. The drawing of the frames will allways be limited by frame rate. If a monitor displays 60 fps (60 drawed frames per second), you will get 16,67ms + the latency of 1ms (grey-to-grey). Just take 1000 (milliseconds) and divide it by the frame rate, and you will get the minimum latency. If you have a 144hz screen, the minimum latency is 6,94 + 1ms.

I actually brought 2x 27GL850-B and have had to return them on the day they arrived due to black light bleed at the top of both panels and one panel the plastic was clicking like the clips where broken, I am hopeful the next two I get are fine as they seemed like great monitors Hopefully replacing my XB2070HU that at it's time was the peak IPS monitor to get I only mention this because I wonder if the different manufacturing methods the more sturdy build of the ViewSonic might lead to less issues from backlight bleed.

What do you see as the best hybrid content creation/gaming monitor? Is there even an ideal option or is it better to go with a dual monitor setup? I liked this viewsonic for it's minimalist design language and 8bit +frc, but it seems like it wouldn't be ideal for either and cutting corners on both fronts.

I tested both monitors side-by-side. Viewsonic literally felt 50% brighter than the LG. I then checked the power supply and saw it was 50% higher for the viewsonic which matched up with my subjective observation (so I'm pretty certain the power draw difference is not due to the gsync module). The difference in brightness alone was enough for me to choose the Viewsonic over LG. It was significantly harder to play competitive fps games as well on the LG due to the brightness issue. It was also not as good of a general experience on the LG. Viewsonic was just a much more fuller colorful experience due to the brighter backlighting. Playing death stranding on it was amazing.

I am glad I was able to get the LG 27GL850 before the human malware hit, I am very happy with it and it is a heck of a lot better than my previous 1080p monitor.

Seems like the Adaptive Overdrive only works effectively at the Standard Overdrive setting on this monitor.

Can I turn off black light probing? I don't know what this is. Also for a dark room do I need better contrast level IPS? I just want a 1440p 144hz that I can see everything as quick as possible and still looks really nice. So I'm guessing 0 overshoot.

What about the OMEN 27i IPS 165Hz 2k Gaming Monitor (8AC94AA)? I am very interested in this monitor. Hopefully it is tested soon. I am not sure if I should settle for a quick TN panel or an IPS for my desktop pc. Most of the time I am gaming behind my desktop pc and working on my laptop. My desktop pc is also ready for a change after 9 years so decisions have to be made.

Thank you for the detailed and unbiased reviews. You guys are leagues better than some reviewers who just play games on the monitor and orate how wonderful each one each is without doing the hard legwork / raw analysis that you do!

The LG 27GL83A-B is the 377 US dollar version of the 27GL850, the same 27" 1440p 144Hz "1ms" minus the nano IPS (P3 coverage) It would be interesting if that monitor have the same response times of the GL850 for less

Wouldn't the variable overdrive in GSYNC mode solve all the issues present with the static settings? Why wasn't that discussed?

I personally think the build quality and g-sync module made the $100 over the LG worth it and I LOVE this monitor after 2 months of gaming, stealth AF!

Does Hardware Unboxed have any website? It'd be nice to see some lists where we could go and see things like input lag for every monitor you have tested etc. - since various reviews only list a handful of other monitors tested :)
