Floki grabbed the necklace, the Saxons overreacted by pulling their swords to attack him and the Vikings took that as their signal to just kill them all. Of course, the Vikings take a lot of things as their signal to kill everyone. 😁

There seems to be a few misunderstandings when it comes to history and eras when you talk about this. The Viking age is considered to have begun in 793 when vikings first raided the monastery at Lindisfarne. This was centuries after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The Eastern Roman Empire (or the Byzantine Empire) was still around, with their capital city being Constantinople (modern day Istanbul). The Norse people (let's just refer to them as Vikings although Viking means "to raid" rather than as a people) were both traders and warriors. The raiders were feared and the traders sailed as far as down to Constantinople several times, trading furs and similar Nordic items for steel and oddities and such. A good example of how far ahead vikings were as traders was that there are items like South Eastern Asian buddha figurines found among items found among archeological finds in Nordic/Russian areas. The Byzantine Emperor heard of the prowess of viking warriors and enlisted them to serve as his bodyguards and as a military company. The companies would consist mainly of Danish/Norwegian/Swedish warriors and those from the areas settled in Ruthenia, aka Rus, in Eastern Europe. These men brought a very different sort of style of combat to the area, where mainly Hellenic/Arabian types of warfare happened, and much like their tactics inspired fear during raids, they were often sent in to break the morale of the enemy. They wielded typical viking weapons, like the dane axe, which worked well against soldiers in those areas because they were not used to fighting against axes, and the vikings were used to pulling shields off enemy combatants with their long axes. Basically, they brought an element of surprise into the battles and, just like in Europe, while they were perhaps not the most brilliant military units, they were always hard for their enemies to understand and get used to fighting. Anyway, this all happened centuries after what is usually considered The Roman Empire had already fallen. Longbows would still be a few centuries away. The Romans are long gone, and later on we'll see some of the remnants of what the Romans did in Britain. Love you guys, keep watching and discussing, just wanted to point out a few things you might want to know. Also I am by no means a historian, just a Swede interested in these things and I may have gotten some stuff confused as well.

The vikings also had an advantage in that they believed that their fates were set. So when they stepped into battle they did so with full confidence that they would survive any battle until they reached the point in their lives that had been predetermined to be their last day.

I think what you might be thinking of is the Varangian Guard in the Byzantine Empire, when you talk about Roman Viking Generals. Technically still Roman but a little misleading since most people tend to think of the Western Roman Empire when someone says "Rome".
@arlaalfrost84457 жыл бұрын
Yeah the term Viking came long after Rome fell, the Romans met Scandinavians along with European barbarians in their conquest, but Viking culture came a few hundred years after Rome 👌

I mean, as someone who also reads up on this history stuff for fun (and also did it in school), it's not like the show does EVERYTHING historically correct either. :P And that's fine (I would love to visit those... famous Danish mountains...), and it's also fine that you don't have exactly correct information about the history in the show. But it is kind of fun hearing you talking about it and getting some of it right and some of it... a tiny bit off. :D But you'll do fine. Getting Rick in on these reactions could be a lot of fun though. Really loved the discussion after this. You seem immediately sucked into this show, which is always fun. Poor Athelstan though. Like, sure, he might have gotten off easily compared to some of the others but man, this is all pretty harsh for him overall. I can relate though, I also get very talkative when I'm drunk. :P Looking forward to next Thursday (fitting, Thor is on their side afterall!) and to finally catch back up with this show.

The fight on the beach is based on a skirmish that took place some years ( if I remember correctly ) before Lindisfarne. So that confrontation could be seen as the true start of the viking era. Pretty cool they added it in the show though, even if the timeline is wrong. But still.

Ragnar wasn't a real historical figure and you can't spoil yourself by looking him up (unless you see show spoilers). He's heroic figure from viking stories and poems. The viking named Rollo was a real historical figure, and extremely famous if you look up what he did and the line of royalty he spawned all the way to modern day.

Speaking from personal experience, they can most definitely spoil themselves by looking up any of these characters.

The absent screen saves time so more footage can be shown from different scenes. It's standard practice for many reactors.

Historically the Roman Empire is long gone. England has several kings south of the Wall and clans to the North. The English are Saxons, Angles, Jutes, celts, etc. Most people never go more than five miles from home. English Yeomen and the longbows don't exist yet.

@Toren80027 жыл бұрын
I think anything you see without the screen is "extra" -- they're only allowed to show 10 minutes of the show itself, or they run the risk of having the video taken down because of copyright stuff. It can be irritating, but it means we get to see more of the crew's thoughts and reactions.
@katieee12037 жыл бұрын
The crew likes to stay within that 10 minute fair use rule for all shows. Other reactors find ways of doing it, loop holes but thats a massive gamble anytime they do it. The crew have had problems before and they'd rather not go through them again. If they get 3 strikes than the channel could get deleted, they rather be safe than sorry.
@Toren80027 жыл бұрын
I think it also depends somewhat on the how the show's owners feel about it. Sometimes, they can be more laid back, other times they can be fairly aggressive. In general, though, fair use laws allow for 10 minutes, so that's what most of the bigger reaction channels try to stick to. Smaller channels that don't pull as much traffic may be able to get away with more, and as Katie mentioned, there are workarounds. It's also worth mentioning, there have lots of comments on other videos (I know I've seen it on their GoT reactions) that basically read "Man, why do you cut so much out? Even if you don't show us the screen, at least let us see how you react to it!!" So...they get complaints either way. Welcome to the internet. =P

Well the crew are only allowed to use 10 minutes of TV footage, with the screen disappearing it allows the crew more time to show more of the reaction. When the screen disappears it's because the crew are talking about something not related to whats going on on screen so it makes sense to remove it so more things from the reaction can be used.
