Great review! Viltrox 85mm is good value if you are on a low budget, but the 90mm is just a gem and worth investing in! I think the addition of weather sealing, the overall improved quality, and the fact it can focus well in video makes the upgrade worthy for most. If you are on a budget you can try a 90mm f2 used for a similar amount.

I remember the time when Fuji's 90mm had cost over $1000, or over €1000 in Europe that is, so in my book $300 over the Viltrox is not so bad, considering you are getting WR and aperture ring, what's one of most important reasons I jumped to Fuji's ship anyway...
@MannyOnePointFour5 жыл бұрын
Great review as always, Andrew. I just bought the XF90mm 3 days ago and am extremely happy with it. Interesting that your findings certainly in regards to AF accuracy and speed differed from what Mattias Burling experienced who concluded in favour of the Viltrox. But on that note, what body did you use because Mattias tested on an X-T3 so perhaps the improved AF performance on the X-T3 had something to do with bringing the best out of the Viltrox, or perhaps it just highlights variation amongst the Viltrox copies. Either way, the fact that the Viltrox even did this well for such a price point is great news however for those on more of a budget. I’m happy with my XF90mm and happy that I’m supporting Fuji, but competition is always healthy too. Nice work Andrew.

I can't seem to find the X-mount version of this for sale in Canada, and I have not tried Fuji's 90mm f2 yet. But I recently picked up a Contax-Zeiss 85mm f1.4 for my film camera that I can adapt to my Fuji, and it's simply outstanding. Chromatic aberration when wide open, sure, but that's also why there is so much perceived depth and fidelity, and the images have so much character. Manual focus of course, using bright red focus peaking with B&W film simulation nails it every time, especially at f2 or higher. Just putting this out there for anyone looking for even more options in this range.

Thanks Chris. I really appreciate that comment. Bias is real and it's in all of us. Pretending to not have any bias is as bad as someone pushing their biases in their review, consciously or subconsciously. But I find that the thing that helps the most for me to battle bias is to be absolutely obsessed with shooting with the very best gear and to never be in a position to owe something to any brand. If someone makes a better lens, I have to have it. That's a different problem, but at least it helps me be less biased. :)

This is interesting, although this lens isn't quite there for me. I've always thought it strange that the large third-party lens manufacturers haven't launched some Fuji compatible lenses. I must check out the Zeiss lens you mentioned. Thanks.

Agreed. The biggest surprise to me here is that other brands who make affordable lens alternatives haven't jumped on Fuji yet. They must not see it as a large enough market yet.

Great review and much appreciated! (Also, being less sharp at f/11 is kind of to be expected bc of diffraction, especially when dealing with a full frame optic used on APS-C.)
@AndrewGoodCamera5 жыл бұрын
I didn't know FF optics on APS-C could contribute to diffraction. Why is that?
@JokingJay5 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewGoodCamera It's because of the difference in pixel size (i.e. the 24 MP on a crop sensor are smaller than those on a FF sensor). Cambridge in Color has a nice explanation and visual representation tool that shows the relative difference of the effects of diffraction on FF vs. APS-C sensors. www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/diffraction-photography.htm It basically ends up meaning that the same amount of diffraction is spread out over more pixels on crop cameras bc said pixels are smaller/more densely packed. But of course this is all more or less theoretical limitations - I can't imagine a client (or at least any of my clients!) viewing any of this and being like "gee, I wish you hadn't used that FF lens on your X-T2 - would've been sharper." ;)

Crop is a function of the sensor, not the lens. So no matter what the lens number, ever, if it's going to be mounted on an APS-C device, you need to apply 1.5 if you want to know what it's equivalent in full frame terms are. Viltrox (Chinese) has a product history grounded in LED lights, lens adapters and other lower cost accessories. Take a look at Amazon to consider the lack of customer satisfaction based on their lack of quality control. So now they are moving product line upscale by building lenses which appear to fall short on performance by almost every standard of measurement, yet we reach out to not say what we are thinking, being that they are second rate at any price and a foolish purchase, because to say such would abuse the YT standards of not simply saying that crap is crap. That's a poor profile for a product review.. Before they folded in 1986, Modern Photography published the most detailed and objective product reports in photography. A few years later, it was revealed that when a camera or lens failed to test up to their minimum standards, they would not publish the "unacceptable" report and would just say nothing in order to not rock the boat.

Hi Randall. I'm not sure if I fully understand, but it seems like you're insinuating that I'm pulling punches and being overly kind in my review of this lens. Maybe it was my happy disposition and enthusiasm to be on YT that threw you? But I thought I was pretty clear that this lens is not up to Fuji lens standards. I do appreciate your insights into the history of the brand. I agree that caution is warranted. Cheers.

@@AndrewGoodCamera Video pretty spoils the quality of the images, I talked about the fact that it would be nice to see the pictures as pictures and not as screenshots in the video

I see. Maybe instead of saying "blablabla" you could have said, "Hi Andrew. Thank you for the time you took on your video. I really appreciate the free information. I wonder if you would be willing to share the photos in their hi res form to study in more detail." Just some feedback for you, since you took the time to offer some for me.

I can't fault your analysis but the whole thing is just a bit too quick for me. I know that 10 mins is the goal but you just seem to dash through your content. At least 50% of your output should focus on your feelings and opinions. I love your channel, but this is disappointing.
@AndrewGoodCamera5 жыл бұрын
Sorry you found it inconvenient.10 minutes is not the goal. Being concise and not wasting people's time who are here for quick info is the goal.

@@AndrewGoodCamera Inconvenient is having to walk an extra 5 minutes because the closest store doesn't have any milk. I'm happy to walk that when I want something that matters, but I subscribe to your channel because of the excellent opinion that you give, not because of the social media bullets that you are firing.

I'm pretty happy about how this review turned out. Not perfect of course, but it's a format I fully intend to follow for gear reviews. For other types of content, we will continue to take our time. But feel free to unsubscribe if you find my reviews lame, or my use of the word "inconvenient" inconvenient. :)

Greg Stevenson This is the format which makes this channel so great to watch. Concise and efficient and very informative. Be grateful for the time and effort put into making these reviews, and also for the fact that it’s one of the first video reviews to hit KZbin too. If you want long reviews and the same thing repeated several times, go and watch The Angry Photographer (no offence to him btw as I appreciate his reviews too).

Buddy, we could make a very very long list of all the things I would need to do to satisfy every critic. I appreciate the feedback, but audio is probably about as good as it's gonna get around here. If that rubs you wrong, feel free to enjoy some other ammerture's videos. :)

I would totally give it a try IF it would feature an aperture ring. I'm so used to the ring by now ... I can not and want not live without it.
