I think part of the reason he thumped his heart was because, as the writer and original performer of the song, he was so very proud of what justice she did to it. She's a good friend of his, so he knew she'd be good, but I think she went BEYOND good, and killed it. What a beautiful song, and done so perfectly by her.

One of the prettiest songs ever written. Vince wrote this after meeting his wife, Amy Grant, for the first time. Never heard this version...only Vince’s original version with Patty Loveless singing background vocals.

Allison could sing the phone book and sound like an angel. Vince is one of the best male vocalists around and has been for a long time. Vince is a world class guitar player/collector. Allison was winning fiddle playing awards as a child in the Bluegrass world and is one of the best fiddle players in Bluegrass music. And she is still the same beautiful person inside and out that she was 20 years ago playing those small Bluegrass festivals!

There it is... I’m glad someone else commented on the backstory of the song because the fact he wrote this is the reason I wanted you to react to it. And you nailed it. When you said everyone else could just get out of the way and let her sing, even Vince agrees with you. You mentioned his heart pound at the end. Also, how many times did he step to the mic to sing but instead just backed away and let her have it? He knew. I’m impressed. Great job. Oh and yes, I see ya shirt. Haha Well played... Go Pokes!

I heard a podcast interview with Vince where he stated that Mark Knopfler heard Vince playing guitar and offered him a place in his band he was forming (Dire Straights) which Vince graciously declined and boy I am sure he did. He’s an amazing guitarist with such a pure tenor voice whose vocals light up any song. However, no female has a sweeter, angelic voice than Allison. I get lost in the sound of her voice every time she sings. I always think of Amy Grant when I hear this song by Allison’s vocals make me forget about Amy on this one.

Another cover where Alison sings it better than the original (I Will, Alone am I are 2 others). Here to be singing it with the song's writer playing and singing harmonies is a special treat. Her take on the song is more melancholy than Vince's recording and I wish he has put that guitar solo in his original recording

How did I miss this video until today. I love when you react to Allison Krauss,because you have a twinkle in your eye. She is lovely.I bet she is just as sweet as she appears.I heard once that someone asked Eric Clapton how it felt to be the best guitar player and he said "I don't know,you'll have to ask Prince" That of course was before Prince's untimely death. Enjoyed the video.

Hey, Don. I just came across this. Listening to you wax eloquent about the human spirit, it begs the question. Do you possess a degree in psychology and/or philosophy? It seems that every one of your analyses probe the inner consciousness of the human heart and soul. Alison's interpretation is rather poignant. Vince wrote this song back in 1994 as an ode to his future wife's smile. The thing is, he had only met her briefly, once. She shook him to the core. When he got together to write with Peter Wasner, Vince admitted that he wanted to write about Amy Grant's smile. Peter asked him, "Do you even know her?" Eventually, be would and they would marry in 2000. He said she still makes him weak when he looks at her. I could feel that longing, the need, that utter baring of the soul in Alison's delivery. I think this song has such power because most of us have coveted that kind of love. Well, I have, anyway. Great analysis, my friend.
@RockN2Country
@RockN2Country 5 жыл бұрын
@Will Deloach That's a wonderful story about how Vince came to write the song. I went back and listened to the song again with that in mind and everything fit perfectly. It's a beautiful story about that untouchable part of life, when you love a woman so much that her smile makes life worth living. As for me, good call, as I have a degree in philosophy, and also listen to many seminars on psychology and other aspects that relate to life on a deeper level (at least that's the way I interpret it for myself). I like thought, but mostly as it relates to how we people live it and process. At age 57 I've come up with this basic idea about people, including myself: kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity is the way to be. Mean spirited, selfish and judgmental are disgusting, and not the way to be. So when I hear songs I listen for those things. Kindness always hits me the hardest, but in a good way. And that's what makes Vince's song about Amy's smile such a beautiful thing. There's so much hurt in this world and when something as simple as a wagon's smile is enough to enliven your soul, it's a sunrise and sunset all in one.
