Unfortunately, here in Red Oklahoma, very few HCWs stay home with any viral disease unless they are extremely ill. They go to work and do NOT wear masks, thus making the health care settings risky for those of us at high risk for severe disease. We have to practically beg doctors, nurses, phlebotomists, etc. to wear a mask and are "lucky" if they'll don a loose-fitting surgical mask. A friend of mine caught COVID while hospitalized for something else and ended up in the ICU for a week. That is unacceptable.
@litsci187710 күн бұрын
Yep. That's why I do my level best to stay out of the hospital. Odds of getting much sicker there are excellent, and I'm too old now for that to be trivial. Dental appointments are first of the day and my dentist and hygienist will wear N95s if asked, but pre-vax, when I arranged with the dentist to test first, the office manager got wind of this and blew a gasket. Academic facility, too. Last thing she wanted was for her staff to test, because if they were sick they'd have to go home. I asked her if she was going to discipline her faculty dentist for voluntarily taking a medical test and told her that if the answer was yes she could come with me to the Dean to discuss it, and she backed off, but she was livid. This was in Iowa, another red state. Come to think of it, that office had a LC neuro victim, too, at the front desk. Woman sounded like she got hit in the head, kept telling the same story over and over. And coughing. Fabric mask. Kept complaining about the mask, too.

Makes me wonder how often it happens everywhere, where there might be some people were sick even in areas where it’s less acceptable. Might be wise to wear a mask going into a doctor’s office or hospital who knows at the very least it would be helping others prevent them from getting sick from our own illnesses.

Why treat covid differently from flu and RSV? Well, as far as I'm aware, flu and RSV don't cause brain damage, and it seems to be pretty common among people who get covid, even now. Another friend just had to give up part of her work after getting hit by it last summer, one in a long string. Just can't get her head back together. It's not like she didn't need to do the work. Again, please consider people who are not well-off men well-looked-after by loving families and staff people at work who're paid less well and have less behind them.

Ignorant reply here. I wish I remembered the source but here goes anyway. Many illnesses result in decreased brain size. Possibly merely from inactivity. Covid may be unique but the lack of study in non covid illness does not make Covid special. I likely got some of that wrong but the spirit is in there.

Apparently RFK wants the FDA to revert approval for the Polio vaccine. I’m sure this information has reached you by now, but I imagine it must be especially upsetting for Dr Racaniello because he studied the polio virus to extensively.

He kind of wanted OPV to go away, since polio is a picornavirus,it replicated enterally and caused polio in reflex. So it's withdrawal was prevented by him.

I believe there is an injectable polio vaccine, but some countries do not have the staff or money for the injectable vaccine.
First of all, Marty Makary, nominated as head of the FDA, is an actual physician and in no way insane, whatever you may think of some of his positions. I'd expect him to push back hard on this. Secondly, Junior still has to be confirmed. Polio survivor Mitch McConnell doesn't seem to like him very much and could still scuttle his nomination, provided he's able to stay upright for a few more months.

I had raw milk once in my life. It was used to make hot chocolate. The cow in question was a championship cow from the King Ranch. I was about 13 at the time and I knew the risks. But I decided that the cow probably had better health care than I did, so I judged the risk acceptable. I didn't suffer any of the ill effects commonly linked to raw milk. But I did notice that the thickening if the mucus in my throat sinuses got worse than I usually got from milk. This lead me to wonder if heat altered whatever I was getting a low-level allergic reaction to when I drank milk. I mentioned this to my mother, who suggested I tests myself with scalded milk. Success, no reaction. So I quit drinking milk for the next 40 years. One day on a strange whim I decided to have some frosted flakes. It had been a favorite and it had been decades... The only milk available was ultra pastured lactose free milk. No reaction. I tried lactase drops with regular milk. Thick gunk again. So whatever it is, ultra pasteurization destroys it. I wonder if I will ever know what it is that I am allergic to...

Are there any studies showing you dont need polio boosters?
@AlbertMark-nb9zo11 күн бұрын
Not really. What is known is that a complete series gives 99% effective protection for many years. Its recommended that adults get a single booster if traveling to areas with a high incidence of polio. Notice that's "adults", where protection may have waned over decades. Small doses of polio will have acted as natural boosters. Vince jokes of that many times during his research days and exposure.
@sciencefliestothemoon230510 күн бұрын
@@AlbertMark-nb9zoit is a bit dependent on the country's recommendations. The USA does a single booster. Most European countries do every 10 or 20 years, depending on the travel destination. Active outbreak areas may even require a booster within the last 12 months. Of course the data on this is meh, and the primary idea is, be safe than sorry.

So, is the polio germ replicating in those sewers?
@AlbertMark-nb9zo11 күн бұрын
Polio is a virus. It requires a human host. Sewer testing just tests the people who have the virus replicate and pass through the gut. Of those people, I believe the stats is 1 in 250 to 500 will get paralytic disease of some sort if no immunity exists. Of the ones with paralytic disease 5-10% will die. It travels via fecal transmission and oral ingestion which is not as uncommon as you would like to think, especially among children.
