Barx is right, MREs are designed to be able to dehydrate as much as possible and are usually excessively salty because the high sodium will kill bacteria and mold by exploding the moisture out of them. MREs are designed to last about 3.5 years (but can sometimes remain safely "edible" for up to a decade) and survive an unassisted fall of about 100 feet. In all honestly, most of them would be far less wretched if they stopped trying to disguise them as real food and just made them nutrient crackers or something.

I can't believe I'm seeing Vinny do a video about an MRE, and also it's neat to see more camera appearances! I'd also like to share a story with anyone reading this because surprisingly now is better than any time to share this story When I was about 17 in high school I was away at a JROTC camp for a solid two weeks, and lived off MRE's and whatever they scraped off the ground to serve us at the mess hall. When I came home my family went out for dinner or something and I was tired and didn't my go out with them. Awhile later I became hungry but didn't feel like cooking, and I had snuck an MRE away from camp in my backpack so I figured I could just make it tasty and warm it in the microwave (it was the hamburger MRE, so I basically scored GOLD). Anyway, I went back to my room to talk to my online buddies when I heard what sounded like gunshots, it didn't occur to me that MRE's had an aluminum lining in the edge, ultimately I had ended up blowing up the microwave, the inside looked like a portal to the nether. My family is a military family, so for months on end I would hear "MRE doesn't stand for microwave-ready-to-eat..." and I lost microwave privileges for the month. That's all, thank you for reading and thank you Vinny for posting this, I'm now reliving the fact that my dumb ass blew up a ration like an idiot.

I was eating MREs for a while because I liked most of them. I thought it was neat just having a hot meal in my room whenever I wanted. I bought a 200 MRE box and just kept it so I wouldn't need to cook. Those are packed with calories. You could eat one a day and be ok for the whole day, they are very filling. Don't try eating only MREs unless you do a lot of excersize. If you don't exercise, you will gain a lot of weight fairly fast with an MRE only diet. Being stranded for long periods of time sucks, so having calorie-packed food is essential for a number of scenarios like exploring or hunting. The cheese is good, however the cheese will constipate you. The whole MRE will constipate you if you eat too many. I've heard horror stories of people being rushed to the hospital for it. MREs sometimes also come with M&Ms or Skittles. The gum breaks down after a while of chewing, It doesn't last long. I feel like it's more a tool to keep you occupied and awake. MRE frappuccino is the best. And yes, the spoon is so solid that you could kill a man with it. One last note to those who want to try an MRE. Blow into the heating bag, fold the top to be air tight. Add some pressure to the bag and check it for leaks. The bags sometimes aren't sealed right. Fill only to the fill line with water after the meal is inserted otherwise it won't get as hot.
