One of my favorite albums of all time, And definitely the best Roots album imo. This album embodies what Hip Hop is/was in that time period and beyond. Still in heavy rotation on repeat without skipping any tracks!! Classic period!!

I foolishly thought that this was played by the Roots with live instrumentation. I own the CD and cassette and don't recall sample information in the liner notes. I'm probably bugging. Classic Album regardless. I have a Black Thought story to share. I'm too relaxed right now.

Questlove said that he even sampled his own drumming on this album. The Roots also remade samples with live instrumentation.
@sambeanland87074 жыл бұрын
i think it is mostly live , with some replayed samples and actual samples

They played it so well, we all thought it was originsl live music.

The album was made with sampled drums on the SP1200 by Quest’s producer/beatmaker friend called Kelo. He also taught Quest how to use it. They purposely wanted this album to have a boom bap traditional 90s rap sound as they were tired of being labeled “JazzRap”

At 9:40 ...Q-Tip actually gave Questlove that record after he asked Tip for a dope sample, and then The Roots remade it.

Amazing album. Barry White stayed with the soulful strings. Lot of strings in this album. Love it.

Underrated album!! If you're looking for pure lyricism and poetic value from 2 dope MC's, then look no further. This is the album for you. Such a classic joint!

Black Thought is actually the best rapper of all time. You can say otherwise but in actuality nobody can out rap son and there are very VERY few that can come off the dome on his level..Alot of times yall might make the mistake of thinking Black Thought is spittin a written, nah duke is just ill like that but what makes him the illest to me, is son is wild humble,🙏 that just solidifies his god mc status....peace and blessings..

Messiah Black I agree with most of what you said. You can’t deny Andre 3000 nor Mos Def or Talib Kweli...They spit straight fire written of freestyle

Always wondered why this album is soooo underrated, even among other root's albums, this is not praised as much as the rest. IMO not only is my favourite album from them and one of my favourite hip hop albums ever.

I remember DITC channel had Kid Capri showing the sample for Clones he has the actual album. I thought Quest made that beat organically...true notes from true musicians huh Quest? You lied, a true musician don’t sample they create from nothing.
@KardiFan20004 жыл бұрын
Sometimes The Roots sample, but most of the time it's live instrumentation. At the end of the day, it's hip-hop, true musicians CAN sample but they don't RELY on sampling, that's the difference.
