I was a big sneakerhead when I was in HS, but I couldn't afford any of the hot pairs so I got a paper route and saved up my money for six months to buy the very first Iverson's with the blue toe. On the car ride home from getting them I opened the box to admire my first pair of cool shoes and when I did, I heard this song for the very first time on Power 99 (Philly/NJ/DE people know what's up) and this song brings me right back to that moment every time. youngins don't understand this song was a stab at the rap game back then when it was all about showing how much money you had when didn't really have it, frontin hard but broke as shit..this was a radio banger and still relevant and hot today...youngin's take notes..the shit they do now was already done but dude's like Black Thought and the Roots stayed true to who they were and never got caught up in the glitz and glamour of fame...they kept it real and that's why they get infinite respect. Real talk. Real Facts.!!

@jeterw753 жыл бұрын
@@laaa7833 I knew they were going at certain NY cats at the time, cause that’s who was hot at the time, but I figured the same could go for any industry dude or crew back then from any city that carried themselves that way

when I was 12 yrs old in 96..some jazz guitarist in community service gave a casette to me and told me to learn english and listen to the lyrics. I will forever be thankful Hauke Böhmer. Germany in the Fall of ´96 someone tried to teach me the truth before I even knew what was up.

Two years later I was on a uni visit in Kiel and since I really liked Erykah Badu I found in a recordstore The Roots single “You Got Me” and by that discovered the Roots - because lot of hiphop came through MTV that didn’t play them quite often before that era. And world was never the same after that…

Without subtitles they are literally just doing what THEY do. It makes the whole thing redundant

yeah kind of, I mean the video is clearly criticizing hyper-sexualized hyper-glamorous rap videos. But it's way of criticizing that type of video is to be that video until like 5 seconds out from being over. Like I get it, but they are definitely taking advantage of the tropes they intend to criticize here. The method of criticism destroys the critique.

The Roots are THE ROOTS. Seriously, how did Jimmy Fallon get them? Bests concerts I have ever attended in my life, and I'm old -- seen zillions -- by far the best, especially with Talib.
