In this video I'm pulling a tree out of our little pond with our vintage 1945 Oliver 80 tractor. I had cut the tree down in a recent video and now it was time to get it out so that it can be processed into firewood.

Love the old flat fender oliver. Most folks these days don't appreciate what those old tractors will do. Even the models without 3 point. All kinds of work was done in days before 3 point. Keep the vintage stuff alive my friend

Everytime i see an oliver like that, I think of the tv show green acres( a favorite of mine BTW). I can just hear Lisa saying " oliver, oh oliver".

That’s a pretty neat old Oliver. I’m a little behind on my KZbin watching this week. But Seeing yours are always a treat. I get the 2wd tractor thing. I’m used to all 4x4 John Deere or CAT units at work. And hen I go home it’s an old Ford 500. Makes for a lot more time. But she’s a good old gal. Thanks for sharing!

Always like the old Olivers. I grew up with a 46 8n and a 56 600 model Ford. The one thing that Ollie has on the Ford was weight- it keeps the front end down. Had to get good with brake steering on the Fords! Just like yours- if you could get traction and keep the front end down- it could pull anything!

This little story was something my dad told me. "We ran nothing but Farmall on the old farm. The neighbor ran Oliver and the other neighbor ran John Deere. I always wanted the John Deere because of the sound. I was only a kid at the time so you can imagine how impressed I was. All day long you could hear that Put Put Put of the Deere."

My original Oliver 80 was the king of the vintage tractor pulls in our area. Never got beat.

My dad had one too. I was just a little guy, remember him out there cranking on that old Deere. He could get it going one out of 5 times he wanted to use it! I recall seeing it out under the old shed/ it was BIG. I was less impressed with the 8n when he got that later- but we all liked the starter !

Hi Mr. O !!😀😀 Sweet old Oliver. They used to work really good for running the thrashing machine, the silo filler the corn shredder and a multitude of other chores around a small farm in the 1940s and beyond. We were still farming that way up until the early 2000s. It would have pulled out the whole tree if you would have hooked to the but end of the tree instead of the top. That wasn't a very big tree. My super C Farmall would have pulled the whole tree out. I've skidded many trees that size over the years. Take care buddy. Logger Al

Shortening the chain would have helped too, you would already have the tree moving before you got to the hill.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea91563 жыл бұрын
If I were further down by the pond, even just a few feet further, I would have been in the mud, and wouldnt have moved the tree at all, so the way I did it was the correct way.

If you are going to pull any tree by its top. Then you need to trim every branch flush with the stem so they don't dig into the ground and act as brakes.

@@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 I didn't say you had to move the tractor, you had a lot of slack in the chain that could have been taken up and still in the same positions with the tractor you were in.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea91563 жыл бұрын
When pulling a heavy load I always leave a fair amount of slack in the chain so that the tractor has some momentum to break the log free. On a straight pull with no slack, and the poor traction, I would most likely not be able to move the tree. Also with the slack action of the chain, all of the momentum doesnt happen at once, and is easier on the tractor, and safer as there is no chain whip. I was actually surprised that the tractor moved the tree, as it weighs more than the rated drawbar pull of the tractor@@johnlincicum6390

One thing to be careful of is starting your forward motion to abruptly. Especially going uphill it can flip. The clutch looks like it may need adjusting. How is your crawler project coming? Do you have any drag saws? Thanks, I really like your content.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea91563 жыл бұрын
The clutch on this old tractor is either on or off, no transition. I have pulled at vintage tractor events with the Oliver 80,s and it is nearly impossible to get the front end off the ground more than a few inches, even in ideal pulling conditions. The incline I am on is pretty slight. My 1918 Fordson would definately flip over in the same conditions though. Every tractor has it,s different characteristics, and experience is the key to safe operation. The Oliver crawler has been on the back burner because of weather and finding a few parts needed to fix it, but plan on starting to work on it next week. I have a Vaughn and a Wade drag saw.. Safety is always my first concern, and experience is the key to safe operation. Thanks for your thoughts.

You have to cut all the bones off a tree before you try to pull it. My 7740 Ford NH would have pulled it out but it had a lot more ponies than your Oliver, like triple. It was a turbo charged diesel with 5,000# weights on the front and bolt on wheel weights., however when you got it stuck - it was stuck. I always carried a saw with me and a 25’ trace chain for such occasions. I usually carried my 395 Poulan with an 18 inch bar on the left floor board next to the clutch. The chain was in a five gallon bucket hung to one of the swing arms. They got me out of trouble a many a time.

The tree was in the water, and most branches were under water and the water was too deep to go out and cut off the branches that weren't under water, so I had to pull the tree out with the branches still attached. Like any job, make an assessment as to what can be safely done, figure out what how to proceed and get the job done. Using vintage equipment makes it more challenging, but more fun for me.
