I had the original version of this kit that DID include the launching torpedo. If the version you had did not include it, then likely your kit was manufactured after the lawsuit surrounding the Battlestar toys. The toys also used to have torpedoes that could fire from the ships, however after a child accidentally swallowed one and choked, a lawsuit forced the firing capability to be removed from the toys (incidentally, this same lawsuit is also why Boba Fett's rocket wasn't able to launch from his jetpack on the original Star Wars action figures).

Yes, I remember hearing about the lawsuit as a kid. And yes, mine didn't have the actual torpedo so it was a later kit. Thanks for watching. Have a great day.

This is a fantastic Viper! I too have fond memories of building this kit, I built one when I was in High School for Art class. I've still got it, and I'm planning later this year to tear it apart, repaint it properly. I'm going to watch your Cylon Raider later this evening, I can just imagine how cool these 2 look side by side :)

I have the updated Revell, Moebeus with para/etch and lighting kit. The updates to the Revell are cockpit, pilot, display stand and added clear parts for engines and cockpit display screen along with decals for same. The rear engine part is no longer solid but holed thru as to add clear discs behind each. Box states "added clear parts suitable for lighting" The original kit I never had but my brothers buddy (Ron Williams) down the street did. Well Ron had brought the kit down to the house as him and my brother were building kits back then and he left it there. Well that was to much temptation for 8yr old little me so I worked on it some. Well I was 8 so all I really did was mess it up (Sorry Ron) to which Ron got a wee bit set off hahaha. I remember he told me off and pitched the kit in the garbage can and yes I attempted a rescue mission but sadly was thwarted by Rons little brother, not sure if Mark ever did finish/savage that kit.

Few years ago i found the Monigram kit, great kit for its time, i was abke to get the dart to work corectly, had to brace the tracks so they wouldnt flex so much and use new rubber bands for the shuttle block to latch right. And have the mobious cylon raider.

Nice job on your kit, really liked your weathering. I actually just pulled this kit out of storage to start building. I bought it second hand a while ago and on opening realized it had some special extras. There is a resin cockpit/figure which I can't find any details about online, seated figure with front section of instruments but not the sides. The original owner has cut out the screens from the cockpit & there is a clear thin plastic piece that covers the whole cockpit piece. Aztec Dummy masking sheets. Original decals as well as a set from JBOT which seem slightly smaller & a lighter orange. Really not sure what direction to take on it, build side panels to finish the cockpit but would really like to light it too but not sure how to do the engine pieces for it. Thought about getting the ParaGrafix set for the Moebius Viper & making that fit somehow. It doesn't have the missile shooter parts but has the hole in the nose cone & the molded parts inside the nose. Too many options I guess!

Great job! one question: what is the tape that you used to hold the fuselage together when gluing? Also, wouldn't that tape get stuck with the glue?
@PlasticImaginationWorkshop8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the compliment! The tape I used is just some "blue painters tape" and no, the glue (Tamiya Extra Thin) is actually more of a solvent so it doesn't stick to the tape. Still, you don't want to use too much as it could pool up under the tape and that wouldn't look very good. Thanks for watching and for the comments. have a great week.

I know it's too late, but should you get a chance to do another TOS BSG 'classic' Colonial Viper build, you should check & see if "Lunar Models" hobbies, is still in business. They made a detailed resin Viper cockpit, and canopy, as well as the landing gear.

Hard to say if there are any differences to the original Monogram kit, of which I still have mine, bought & built back in around 1978-79, when I was a young teen. Obviously anyone, including me, bought the kit because of the TV show. The decals had long since worn off, such as those red patterns, even back then, so I had to cut paper & color them red. I did install the torpedo launcher, but that no longer functions because the rubber band had since dried out & I am not about to crack the hull open to replace that, heh. The space dust weathering was done with calligraphic ink flicked on with a toothbrush, as airbrushing equipment was somewhat expensive for me at the time. This means that I could wash all that off with water today if I wanted to, heh, but I'm not going to do that either. I want to remember my youth by not retouching it. The model has been sitting on a high shelf in all its dusty glory along with a few other models done back in the day, such as a Radeen Shogun Warrior, USS Nimitz, Buck Rogers Thunderfighter, lighted sign scrolling Goodyear blimp, etc. Other models I have made are hidden away in a big drawer, some with broken off parts that I need to reglue back on. I had since stopped kit modeling by the mid 1980's due to this thing called computers, but had also gotten into some 3D CAD work, which in a way was a continuation of plastic kit modeling. I have at least one more plastic model that I got decades ago that I would like to build one day, a Star Wars B-wing bomber. But good video. I actually also wanted to get a Cylon Raider back then, but I did not get one. Oh & I still also have the Viper kit cardboard box, it has also aged since 1978, but it's still strong & all together, along with a few other boxes I kept of other models.
@PlasticImaginationWorkshop Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your story Rob, really interesting. I had one of those lighted, scrolling Good Year blimps too. I loved that thing. At one point I gutted it and placed an old digital alarm clock inside of it so it looked like the blimp was telling the time. Great memories... Thanks again for sharing and for watching. Have a great weekend.
@robwebnoid5763 Жыл бұрын
@@PlasticImaginationWorkshop ... Cool to see that I wasn't the only one with that blimp, heh. Afaik, I have not turned mine on since the 1980's, lol, but I'm sure it still works, it's basically just a DC motor. I might have a look & make sure I did not leave aging leaky batteries in it. Oh & I also liked the reimagined BSG reboot tv series, so I have seen videos of the QMX Viper Mark II lighted kit versions here on YT.

i'm not sure it was 1997 I think it was earlier than that, because I bought all the reissued kits when they came out, and I was still working at the deli at the time. The missile was removed due to a lawsuit around the toy that looked nothing like the actual ship, that's where the missile was originally added and the model kit people replicated it thinking they had some news they didn't because nobody talked at that time, the missile parts of the mold were filled in

The original scale 1/ 48 viper toy was out for about two years before one STUPID kid shot a nose dart down his throat which unfortunately for him, his parents, & millions of kids world wide - all such toys & model kits were pulled from shelves. I missed out on the cool toys because of stupid. Though I wish he had lived to regret & learn from his stupidity. The models & toys eventually returned without the darts. My cyclon raider had two dart shooters. One beneath each wing. They were kind of lame in functionality. I have original decals I never used. By age 18 I went through a burning phase. I set two old models on fire to scientifically study how a plastic model in flames differs from hollywood. Well, one was you guessed it. Oops! Before you all shoot your mouths off, my older brother closest by age had burned most of his coolest models. Nothing I ever said, offered, nor how much I begged stopped him. He stuffed in firecrackers too. And he's actually a mean spirited & deceptive person now. Possibly all along, only disguised.
