"the jimi hendrix of the turntables" is damn right. he scratches in such unique, psychedelic and at time downright scary way. i never seen someone spin like this. gen z here barely getting into DJ's and mix master mike is one of the first that i discovered.

It took me a long time to realise just how much mike is ALL OVER the Hello Nasty album. It's wasn't just scratching - he was allowed to become part of the music on nearly every track.

Saw mike with the beastie boys during the license to I’ll tour, then headline at my very first rave I ever went to in 99 at home base in SF and he absolutely killed it. Met him in 02 staying at a hotel I worked at in Sacramento for the 02 kings/Lakers playoffs & made it a mission to meet him. Found out he & another friend checked in to two different rooms. Ended up stealing 2 nice bottles of wine (which the hotel should provided in the first place lol) and presented it nicely on a room cart. Very appreciative as he was, he came down to the lobby to say hi. Signed my MixMasterMike cd cover. 🤘 as I left that night after my shift, a coworker flagged me down saying that he had something for me. Gave me a dope glossy signed photo as well. Made my night.

@@sebastian-gs9ffThe M44-7’s were LEGENDARY cartridges for scratch DJ’s back in the day and are pretty much holy grails now for all turntablists. I still got mine in the boxes and some “white labels” in the tubes. But yea believe it or not Shure used to make KILLER turntable hardware. They added bass to your records and the needle would never hop off the record. I still use em, but I’m waiting for my Stanton 500’s to finally die.

@@urbangangsta But cue point is a huge factor that is intrinsically shown off, whether it's meant or not. It's just an added bonus when dj'ing like this with no buttons or laptops. I remember those Vestax turntables with the pitch controls down the right side. Vestax thought some DJs would prefer them to the normal pitch controls, but I don't think they were a success, because they put them back in the old position when they later released the PDX-2000 model. By the way, did you ever see Mike on the kids' TV show 'Yo! Gabba Gabba!'
@djimma50804 жыл бұрын
Yeah I find the regular place for the pitch better, I had these vestax and I didnt like it, i dont like regular pitch on turntables when they are not battle style, you can be far more accurate on the pitch when it's side on as you can tap it and you can see the bevel better, I have never understood why mixing djs didn't use battle style, turntables are clusmy to use that way and it has no advantage over battle style for mixing

Wow it's nice to see the Vestax PDX A2S (made in japan) and Vestax mixer PMC-05 PRO II (Made in Japan) days ago, I went to a thrift store in tokyo near my place, it was sale about $20 dollar each. Mike lived the dream of every turntablist when he joined the Beastie Boys. All that mainstream exposure must have had him seeing dollar signs in front of his eyes! Actually, a fun fact about that is, when Mike first met the group, it was at a little show they were doing at a club in Sacramento, back in '94, where they were performing Punk Rock music under the name Quasar, and when he went backstage, they were playing his 'Explosive Box Cassette' mixtape, and they told them they were big fans of his. Another thing a lot of people don't know about Mike is that he, like the Beastie Boys, is Jewish.
