Many times I have brought very old books home from estate sales, garage sales, or even antique stores and have found old notes, letters, recipe cards, and other personal items that were left between the pages from the previous owners. The added bonus of these items make the book even more precious and make for even a more personal attachment. Blessings :-)

I have books from older relatives that have passed and I left the notes in them. Each time I open a book, it's a short visit with my Grandmother a prayers from a Great aunt, or even my Great Grandmother. Blessings.

just an FYI in case unaware: ALWAYS do a lead test on any vintage paint. The tests kits are cheap and can be purchased online or at most paint and/or hardware stores. Lead exposure, especially for children, can be devastating. There are also proper remediation procedures to be followed. Be well!

My grandma had this style and to me personally it feels super cluttered. I guess I feel this way because as a kid I was always having to clean it so I always said as an adult I would never have all that clutter so I didn’t have to clean it. Your home is very beautiful and it does exude coziness and seems inviting. Thank you for sharing it with us.

This is what I've been trying to attempt in our home. I'm trying to have our home a comfy and cozy coastal cottage feel. I kind of feel it right now but we've only lived here for a few years. So I'll keep a look out at thrift stores next time for more pieces to add 😊

Good job of your recreating the vintage past. I teach New Hampshire rural lost arts from 1920 to 1940, when time allows. JIm & I built a farm cottage at the base of our family farm in 2016. It is an ongoing project. We are just painting the interior this month through December. We searched and found a local painter to help us with the cathedral ceilings, as we are both over 65. I am restoring a 1924 Hoosier golden oak baking cabinet and completely restored a 1930 Home Comfort kitchen wood stove that graces our kitchen. It is keeping us toasty as I type. My next quest is a small golden oak ice box. While I appreciate your fondness of leaving chipped paint as is, or even distressing new items... We have a working farm. I am using my vintage items everyday and need them mostly restored and functional, especially the wood stove. If I can't refinish and get the musty odor out of the Hoosier, it will become an art supply cabinet, instead of a baking center. Our cottage looks like it stepped out of 1935 and is certainly not pristine. Friends say is it cozy, lived in and inviting. Keep up your passion! It is a wonderful glimpse into history. I teach, A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A 1935 N.H. FARM WIFE. Its all there, in my kitchen!

I don't comment on much, but you are me 30 years ago. I adore this and you! I am blessed to have so much of what was my parents' and grandparents and to have been raised with a mom who taught me the love of thrifting early on so my children were raised eating on depression glass plates, and Gammy's china and drinking out of the glasses that my grandparents got out of boxes of detergent during the depression. Blessings to you and your sweet family and may the grace of God continue to flow over and through you and keep doing what you are doing! It is a joy!

Beautiful home! We have a lot of similar items, and I also collect truly old and vintage things. I never paint anything vintage to look “shabby chic“. When someone does this, they turn a truly old item into something that looks like a new item purchased from a manufacturer that makes New items look old. If you want to keep your good old chairs around for another 50 years or so, and if they are just loose at the joint where the leg goes into the bottom of the seat, that is a super easy fix with wood glue. No clamping involved. You just remove the leg, make sure the end as well as the hole are both clean, and put your wood glue on both (use a small paintbrush to thoroughly cover the surfaces where the joints meet). Re-insert the leg, turn the chair upright, and place something heavy on the seat overnight. No more falling guests, and no more finishing off of the old chairs, they get a new extension on their lifespan 💖💖💖

I don't like ceiling fans in my home either. We took an old 2000 sq ft wood building and built walls inside to make it a 3 bedroom home. It use to be one of those guys club meeting buildings, like the Shriners. It had 2 huge 42" wagon wheels made into chandeliers inside. One is in my living room now and one in the kitchen, edison bulbs for one and actual candles in the other. They are so beautiful! Never thought of adding copper to help with the feel I'm going for, that's a great idea :)

Lovely video, Elliotts! That wallpaper behind you, Shaye, is delightful! 👌 I love this approach to decorating and furnishing a home. My style is a bit different, but I’m so with you. Very few things in my home were purchased new. Some of my recent finds are a pair of pewter candlesticks for our dining table, a stack of white cotton napkins we use at every meal, a chest of beautiful silverware for $20, and a vintage wooden children’s chair that my little ones now sit in daily. 😊 We also have books stacked everywhere. (That part of the video when the books tipped over was the BEST! 😂💗)

My 19 year old daughter and I enjoyed your video. She, Clara, is a budding artist and likes identifying style and architecture. She thinks yours is a Colonial style before the Georgian influence. Well whatever it is we loved it. I purchased the book you mentioned last summer. I am not into the trend and have a huge garden and like you I like to bring it inside as much as I can. I was often embarrassed and uncomfortable making excuses when folks are over. Your book gave me more confidence in how I love to decorate. Thank you! Meg

If my kids were young again, I'd try to do more of what your family has created, shared, and cherished. But as I watched the amazing environment you've built, it blesses me with the ability to look around at my surroundings and know, I've actually been doing a bit of this always and you've helped me to embrace me! We live in an affluent community with all the perfect floors, perfect cabinets, bathrooms etc. I grew up with my grandmother's floor and I loved that live in feeling. So, I don't care about dings and a bit of character and actually prefer it. But it's so frowned upon here if there's a mark on your floors. I "live" in my house. Thank you for helping me to see how cool that my mother-in-law's wicker chair with beat up white paint is a main chair in our living room, my beautiful rock fireplace built by my husband and father from rock off our land, the mantle made from a large ashe tree my uncle cut down 40 years ago, saved, and then my dad had it made into our fireplace mantle, more ashe lumber being cut into panels surrounding all that, my turquoise love seat, pie safe my parents bought me for my 18 birthday, pieces from my Grandmother, the old 4-layers paint-covered shutter with stringed lights in the corner, and on and on. Thank you for helping me see that being me as I raised my family is a wonderful way to be. I love your gardens and you "home." Thanks.

I really enjoyed your video, our local thrift store knows us by name too. It was out of nessesity mostly when our family was young but we always found joy in the thrift. Your home is beautiful, and I love the faded glory of older stuff rather than the fake distressed and buffalo check.

My home is full of charity shop, junk store, antique fair pieces. My friends love it! And so cheap!
