Their kitchen is the most beautiful of the typical farmhouse (or even not) youtubers that feels so sterile and white. I love how its full of character, it changes through time, there is realistic "clutter" and just overall feels so real and yet so beautiful.

It's amazing how people think they "need" things they don't: counter stools, a garbage disposal, even loads of cabinets. I also love the thoughtful space. If it had a SMEG instead of a sub zero, and a quartz easy care counter, it'd be perfect for me!

It's larping. Why not just buy an old farm house and save it? My house was built in 1880..with wood from trees on the property. Little things like that, you can FEEL the spirit of a house made from the earth beneath it. Families were born and probably died in my house. You can't recreate that no matter how much refurbished barn wood you buy or how much money you spend. I think it's funny yuppies and suburb/city folk make fun of us country people, but they're dying to live like us.

Love how your home is so well-thought-out. I bought a bunch of old, Victorian homemaking books years ago and READ THEM! :) They were huge, but offered so much insight into how a home should function, paint colors, the PURPOSE behind furniture and placement. It was eye-opening. So many look to "the old ways" and think it's old-fashioned and out-of-date. I say, they were wise women who knew what they were doing when setting up a home. They took pride in it and put much thought. Anyway, love this video! Love your Homemaker Chick podcasts too. I also have a 6 foot harvest table with benches in my kitchen that my father in law built for our wedding 39 yrs ago.every meal has been eaten on it. I love that you don't have a hood and have wondered this myself. In our new house, I absolutely do not want one but from reading online, I've been somewhat forced to feel like they're necessary - esp because they're considered the norm. But now I have a reason to put my foot down and keep my walls open :)

They are also 'code' in some locations... a certified Gas Fitter will not install a Gas Stove without a Hood Fan where we live...it is illegal and dangerous... Shaye's is electric/propane...not sure what the Code is for that, where she lives.

I admire your planning and patience. Truly. I'd probably never have an outcome like this because I can't imagine myself being patient enough to envision something and save for something and having it delivered.. and having to pay to install it or install it myself. And I really loved that about your story several times throughout the video! That is a beautiful thing about you guys for sure. And I just enjoyed the overall tour. Like how you set up your kitchen. Btw, the walls were probably originally plastered over. Wood walls were mostly structural and were not considered an interior finish. They were usually plastered. We like the look now, but they were originally hidden behind plaster.

I have been so inspired by your kitchen from the very first video I saw. This year I have completely gutted our kitchen in our 1930s home. We used repurposed lumber for old shiplap walls, removed all of the 70s built in cabinets, and created an unfitted kitchen. Antique pieces that are both beautiful and functional. So open. My friend says it's built for me and it really is. It's my workspace, my passion. I couldn't be happier!

One hundred years ago no homeowner with any bit of money would have exposed wood,(or brick), in any room. They always plastered. It was proper. The exposed brick or wood presentation is a totally modern interpretation. Kitchens always have more wriggle room for design since few people would have the bare bones type kitchen of yesteryear. Our house was built in 1883, older than peanut butter! The total size of the kitchen is roughly 10x12. It also includes the washer/dryer because originally the house didn't have plumbing and previous owners needed somewhere to put those. (There's a well under the kitchen floor, but someone built a toilet over it). When we bought the house, the kitchen was painted gold with black cabinets so the first thing we did was to paint the upper cabinets white & the lower a light blue. It really brightened up the space alot! Then we took out the vent hood, since it didn't go anywhere, and installed a lights and a small shelf. We now use the original dining room as a kind of butler's pantry since the kitchen is really small for a family of 6. Our table didn't fit into the dining room, which measures roughly 10x10. It's a little weird but works for us. You just have to use what you have and what works best for your family in the space! :)

I love your kitchen, and truth be told I love that you mentioned it taking six years to get to this stage. The before and after is DRASTIC! We are a homeschooling family of 8 and it takes us a long time moving through renovations too. Recently though, our family acquired a large homestead. This has been a dream of mine for over 20 years! We had a small homestead at one point but it didn't work out so well for a variety of reasons-one was being in the wrong place. After we moved to the PNW I did urban homesteading (the only home we could find at the time for us was in town) but it wasn't as much fun as bigger scale homesteading! We've been having a lot of fun with our new homestead journey, and I've been binge watching your videos again for this reason! Right now we are working on renovating our place as it was only about 75 percent finished, and our kitchen has been the most fun of all to work on.

I have renovated a 1950s home and I also built a house from the ground up… Meaning I wore the nail bags, swung the hammer, and designed the home. It took us four years both working full-time. So I can relate to living in a construction zone.😂 i’ve had dish washers in all of my homes. I raise my son hand washing dishes. He and his stepdad took turns washing and drying and putting them away. He is a grown man with his own home and he and his girlfriend have a dishwasher but do the dishes by hand! My niece had a new minister at her church. He told his congregation on one of his first sermons that he was the kind of minister that liked to stop in to visit over a cup of coffee outside of church services so he could actually know the members of his church. When the congregation gasped and murmured that their house wasn’t always “preacher clean” he explained further. You never have to apologize for the tidy state of your home especially when someone stops in unannounced. He said he was a firm believer that a house should be clean enough to be healthy but messy enough to be happy. That has always resonated with me.

Beautiful functional farmhouse kitchen. I am gatehring inspiration for remodeling our 1907 farmhouse kitchen and I really like a utilitarian style kitchen with some comfort and flare. I say ditch the dishwasher all together. I did about 2 years ago (I bought a brand new expensive dishwasher and it was DOA). So I returned it and never looked back!

smart to put your money towards quality that lasts. LOVE THE STOVE!!I didn’t have a functioning vent for years, the ceiling collected the grease so as long as it is painted in a washable finish and cleaned periodically (annually?) it will be ok. Spices shouldn’t be near heat but they do look good. Wallpaper is beautiful. Fabulous kitchen!

I knew that wallpaper was French!!!! I watch a lot of U.K interior design videos. And when I saw your kitchen I though oh French cottage. But then you were American when you spoke. And then I saw your stove!! And I thought she must love the French style. Their stuff is the best. It does last for years and years. I love your little sitting nook too! I’ve only seen that in European homes too. I wish we did it more in the states.

I love the vibe of your kitchen. After watching, I think I’ll just use calico in stead of cabinet doors and change from the stainless sink I bout to a farm sink. I can do butcher block and marble as you have done. Thanks for the tip about open shelves above. I think I’ll just pair down my possessions to the bare minimum so that they will fit the tiny space and put a mini pantry under the loft stairs. I love all the hanging garlic and flowers and herbs. I’ve been looking for a couple of overstuffed chairs for exactly the reason that you have them. I cook very simply with veggies, whole grains, herbs, and legumes. The two of us eat only fruit for dessert. So, we can eventually, hopefully begin to fill our year’s supply hoppers with stuff from out place. Maybe, I’ll get a carpenter to make bins like a Hoover cabinet to put above. We plan to attach an tiny architectural greenhouse to the south kitchen side of our tiny cottage to grow winter greens and provide passive solar heating. Anyway, again I thank you for another lovely and interesting video. I love the feel of your kitchen, which btw is bigger than our cottage.

I bought a new dishwasher a couple years ago and I wasn't happy with it and then I started adding 1/4-1/3 cup of borax to each load as well as putting some detergent in the pre-wash indent. Then I make sure to run hot water through the faucet to wash my hands before hitting start and it makes a world of difference.

I don't know if you realize that heat and light degrades spices. IMO, a better spot for them would be on your counter, by the stove, beside your oils. A little tall shelve unit there would house them nicely, and, still be convenient, and, you don't risk a scald reaching over the stove to get them where you have them now. Your kitchen is so vintage, love it. P.S. You didn't mention your farmhouse sink, is it vintage or new? If new, where did you get it?

LOVE !!! I absolutely love this. I am currently re-doing my kitchen, which is very small. Yes, I could afford new cabinets, but I look at them am like, Yucko.....I just do not care for them. My current kitchen island is a clearance cabinet with a butcher block on top. So I am going with the flow of repurposed and well loved items. When I moved to my home 25 years ago......all I could afford was the "assemble" type pieces (like fiberboard stuff). Now I am excited to find some real wood pieces and mix & match. Your kitchen it absolutely adorable. I appreciate you sharing this content and inspiration. Good job !!! Great job actually. This is very homey and comfortable. Exactly what a kitchen should feel like.......Oh and very functional as well. These are the questions I have been asking like "Exactly what am I going to be using in this space?" and laying it all out with the answers to these questions. Thank you again.

Hi there I love you're kitchen. I had a new kitchen 5 years ago it's a lovely light grey. Buy at the moment I'm trying so hard to make it old looking. Absolutely love the “lived-in” imperfect aspects of your kitchen that makes the rest of us feel like we aren’t abnormal with our kitchens. We are currently living in what will be our future garage with a kitchenette with unfinished concrete floors. I hope it won’t be 6 years until we have a normal kitchen, but we will definitely appreciate it when we get there. 😽😽😽
