Thanks for this video. I have an Invicta Pro Diver collection. Two of them have the Myota Japanese quartz, two more have the Swiss automatic Selita SW200 movements, and the last three have the automatic Seiko NH35A. I love every one of them. But seeing this video of the vintage example was indeed a very special treat. So thanks again.

I daily wear an Invicta 52 mm hydromax, and l absolutely adore them. Im a pretty big built guy and having got sick of struggling with the 42 and 44 mm usual suspects discovering Invictas was a breath of fresh air, anything less than these Just looks like a ladies watch on my giant wrist. Admittedly some of their designs are pretty crass but the hydromax in stainless has a touch of the Rolex deep sea about and can still wear tastefully in most situations where a subby homage would. Enjoying the channel, All the best Jay 👍🏻

I'm fascinated by the workings of watch movements, but more than that I'm amazed at the machining that must go into the base plates and bridges. The question then goes through my mind as to how anyone goes about designing a watch movement.
@MyRetroWatches3 жыл бұрын
A good question. In modern day it’s what is learnt from the past plus 3D modelling and CNC machining. It’s when it’s all made by hand that the mind boggles ! Thanks for watching .

Thats the best way to find a non-working watch!!!! Found a hair in the balance once, another non worker was a Birks Aqua which would not wind, lucky me, it was an oyster case and and a Rolex movement. The reason it did not wind is the crown was screwed down so tight it could not be unscrewed. Being a Birks Aqua meant it was not recognized as a Rolex with a screw down crown! Also case back says ‘waterproof’ making this pre 1971. In fact it was a defacto rule around 1968 but the last appearance is excepted to be around 1971. Cheers, great work. You can see how complicated and ‘instantaneous’ date change mechanism is!

@davidhammond93363 жыл бұрын
Great video Mike, wow that automatic section was a challenge. Usually I talk myself out of a section of a rebuild as well, by the time I get to it I am very apprehensive and usually it all ends in tears. However eventually you get there unless you lose some screws or springs and spend the next hour searching for them grrrr. Always pays to have spare part movements I think, reduces the tension knowing you have spares just in case. For instance was on the calender side putting together and the screw driver slipped from my hand went thru' the perfect size hole for the screw driver of the plate and broke one of the pallet fork jewels on the movement side. Could not do it if I tried to do myself...oh well.
@MyRetroWatches3 жыл бұрын
Man that’s a bad slip to break a jewel . Happens to us all. I pulled a hairspring on another persons watch a few weeks ago. It took two nights to bend it back in shape! I was mortified at the time. I try not to get apprehensive as I know it leads to mistakes however I was just worried on this one as I had not seen the orientation of the parts in the auto works.

As an amateur/hobbiest watchmaker, here's what I've found regarding modern day Invicta watches: Their modern watches use outsourced movements, frequently with a custom rotor for their automatics. They use Seiko (TII), Citizen (Miyota), ETA, Ronda, Selita, and Seagull movements, and potentially some chinese clone based movements models as well (I am less familiar with Seagull movement reference numbers), but spend their time focusing on case, strap/bracelet, dial, and hands. The NHXX movement based watches I've gotten from them have been very well regulated, even tighter than Seiko's own standards. I've entertained picking up an SW-200 based Invicta Reserve watch, but ultimately held back, and decided to DIY something with that movement, mainly for the experience. As they mainly work in the visual design of watches, they will have a wide variety of styles, ranging from more traditional pieces (everyone has their submariner inspired design of course), to some of the more outlandish and bold. Not everything is to my taste, but with a little bit of research into what is driving the watch, which is freely available information on their website, I've been very happy with the pieces I've purchased from them, and keep them next to my own assembled/restored watches.

Haha we just had a debate on this in a Facebook group. I mark mine , I use a diamond scribe under magnification and just use my initials and the month / date. Pros will use many things but I believe job numbers so they can validate a warranty. The argument now is that this can be vandalism to someone’s property as the watch service centre will have a computerised record. I counter that with the moment it goes to another shop they could consider the watch to have never been worked on. Oh and some just use permanent marker pen.

Yes, now are a loud big arse kitschy thing with few exceptions, one of them some of the diving watches, being their main the Pro Diver, which it’s too much of a homage to the Submariner (which is a generalized sin among many brands), that has a 200 meters water resistance and decent finishes, for a price that sometimes can go under the $100 USD. Those first used non-hackable movements from Miyota and Seiko, and from few year ago started to use that very popular workhorse known as the Seiko NH35.

If I had to take a guess, and in my humble opinion only, I think this type of movement was one of the reasons for the downfall of the mechanical watch. With quart watch is coming out, which were so much more accurate and simple at the time, having a overly complicated movement like this along with the added cost for a watchmaker to service it due to the complexity of it, would drive a lot of people towards a quartz movement.

Mechanism looks bit complicated compaird to Seiko. Invicta in Latin is Undefeated. Thanks for the Video.

About oiling the pallet fork. I agree; oil can and will cause drag; oil is counterproductive. I see other watch repairmen put oil on the facets of the palet stones. I think that is an even worse idea. Eventually, the oil will become sticky and gunk up. The basic idea of using jewels in a watch is to benefit from minimum friction (and wear) without the need for oil. Oil acts a damper.

I do tend to oil the exit jewel as this is considered good practice , or to oil some of the escape wheel teeth. Pros will use epilam to keep the oil in the right spot plus you should use the correct oil for it (which I have) As hobbyists I think it’s best to stay away from this until you are confident with your droplet size otherwise it’s far to easy to over do it.

Found an old watch in the drawer, used to be my wife's mother's, it says "omega constellation 25 jewels 1978 18k 0,750", if you wind it a bit and set it to a whole hour it will run for 10 minutes, if you set it for the half hour it won't, the seconds hand in a small face runs, and it ticks, but it won't run for more than 10 minutes, what to do, I can't fix it, and I have no idea if it's a real omega or what it is worth..etc...it looks like gold.. Any ideas?

Take it to a watchmaker or just give it to me!

@@red75v67 You could only sell it in between 18:50h and 19:10h... lol, the watch only moves its hands when the hand minute hand is in that area, it does tick, and the tiny secondhand runs in it'sown mini dial.. at 15 past the hour, nobody would buy it.. It's my wife's can't give it to any one :)

I'm always amazed at how much crap can get inside these "Sealed" instruments. Before I retired as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, the lab I worked at had a Service Tech come in and clean our Microscopes. I was amazed how much crap could get inside the instruments in just 4 months.

Hi Mike. An interesting restoration for which many thanks. In the past you have used Molykote DX grease rather than the Moebius 9504 that others seem to favour. On this video you've gone for the Seiko S-4 grease. Was there anything wrong with the Molykote? Regards, martin

Nothing wrong with Molykote. I used the S4 because I bought it so work on the Seiko bullhead restoration. It’s thicker and I think it’s graphite (could be wrong ) I wanted to see how easy it is to apply. It’s each to their own. I don’t really buy into all must have right oils. Certainly for your own watches. I try to show I can do everything on a budget .
