Big thing I love about Tokyo is that wealth of knowledge people have for the vintage clothing. Store clerks often have encyclopaedic knowledge of so many types of garments. They can look at an Adidas jacket and tell by the stitching/zips/buttons etc whether it’s 70’s 80’s 90s 2000s or whatever , it’s a really passion and dedication for craft. The stores are much more curated than vintage stores in the US or Europe.

regarding the granddad shirt: it’s a pretty common style in asia, uniqlo calls it stand collar shirts. in the philippine context it kinda looks like the barong tagalog and the camisa de chino. the barong tagalog isn’t tucked in and are typically worn on formal occasions such as graduation ceremonies. my university requires men to wear barong tagalog along with our sablay which is our academic regalia instead of a toga. the camisa de chino (literally shirt of chinese) is usually worn casually from what i’ve seen.

Having just retourned from a 2-month Japan trip, your first fit seems insane. Not in terms of look (although it definitely looks good) but in terms of warmth. The last week we stayed in Tokyo it was like 35°C with 85% of humidity, I was absolutely drenched in sweat in just shorts and a t-shirt.

I was also so lucky to go to Japan in March - I’m a chunkier American dude so I’ll admit it was tough to find pieces 😅 but I found this INCREDIBLE upcyled vintage piece in Shimokitazawa Went to the Kapital in Kyoto but we only had a few minutes there - got some sandles, sweatpants and some socks I went to loose some llbs and get back to shop in Japan with an empty suitcase - or 2 🎉

With the grandad shirt, they were the thing in Edwardian fashion, being tucked into very high waisted trousers held up by braces, and they were collarless because you would attach starched collars via a pin on the back and the button on the front. Very fiddly by today's standard. You can see old European grandad shirts are quite long to tuck in, there's some vintage fashion tiktokers who show off Edwardian outfits styling these shirts

Grandad collar shirts in heavy cotton with stripes as usually workers shirts, so mills, manual labour etc, you’d have one shirt and you’d just swap out the collar for occasion and to keep the shirt “clean” the upper class would of have more bespoke of a wardrobe with finer shirts of higher quality
