My first sleeping bag when my Uncle gave it to me in the late 1970's upon joining the Scouts.

I found one of these with the cover at an antique market in Allegan, Mi for $10 this summer of '23.. I absolutely love it! I had to stitch up 3 holes from missing snaps on the cover. The guy said the bag's zipper had issues but I unzipped and got the cloth out, so far it works fine. Generally I lay on top of it in my one wind and cover up with a poncho liner. This is great kit for $10.. also, I waahed it at a laundry mat and dried it with a clean pair of tennis shoes to fluff it up.

I have one of these and travel all around the United states using it pretty much every night. I take real good care of it and try to even oil up the outer bivy layer whenever I can. I got lucky and found it at a homeless shelter in California and has done me right for the past 2 years or so. Good video man.

Great vid. Like the series. I have used a US military down bag down to 30F, wth clothes on here in Virginia. About 12 years ago I picked up a British military down bag with rubberized bottom and nylon top. It had snaps so a poncho could be attached, and a protective carry bag sewn in place to the bag so it could be folded, toggled, and rolled up into it. That bag too, will take me to 30F. The way I sleep and what I wear to bed makes a difference on its range. I have used two military down bags with a blanket over the whole shebang town to -6F. That British bag stays in my truck for just in case I get stuck on the road, having to spend the night at a friend's, or increasing the warmth of my lightweight kit. As you so rightly point out old school works if used properly. Back in the day, I had a BSA rucksack. It worked with a blanket but not real well with a std sleep bag. The down bag was more compact. Back then I had to lash on sacks to the sides to hold extra kit. Nylon packs made their debut in the 70s with a frame and first went with the BSA nylon pack and frame and later a horizontal zippered sections pack with frame made by Gerry. In the military ALICE. You have a great channel. I share your vids. Thanks for doing great vids.

Found two at a thrift store for $5.00 a bag. One was new but had two cuts on the outside,so I took the feathers out of the horrible looking bag and stuffed feathers from it into the two cuts newer bag and sewed her up.Your right the cotton covered M-1949 bags tear easily. I will use mine and take care of it like you told me! Thank you!

Interesting about those Australian and New Zealand blankets. They are not too hard to find here in New Zealand, usually at the Salvation Army Stores or Army Surplus or on line. They had been used by the military for decades. We had 4 or 5 issued to each of us way back in 1981. If any one wants them, contact me and I will hunt some down for you. Thanks for these interesting videos Blackie.

There is a bivy bag larger outer bag and smaller inner bag. I'm 6'1" and about 300lb. I usually use the outer bag and my son uses the inner bag. Thanks

Looking at my bag again, and trying to attach it to the outer cover, I see it has a half length zipper, apparently steel. And no way of lacing it to the outer cover. It's yellow at the moment may have been khaki at one time. The down tubes run from top to bottom. I suspect I have an M 1942 bag. The steel looking zipper would makes sense during wartime shortages A possibly seventy-five-year-old sleeping bag still in usable condition? Cool

I got one of theses m-1949 sleeping bags and done some research and can’t really find a temperature rating how low and how high would you take it
@blackoracle695 жыл бұрын
i think it was for the 30 down to -10..but that's from info from a long tie ago..these bags are now often 50-70yrs old..so even if you find on in as new condition..its not going be warm don at the low temps

blackoracle69 but not in a machine right?
@blackoracle696 жыл бұрын
nope i fill the bathtub with warmwater..add downy..stir it up..add bag gently wash but do not ring it..then drain tub leaving wet bag add fresh warm water to rinse....drain tub gently press out excess water..let bag sit in tub and drip dry for a hr or two then take out side to sir dry on top of a flat spot..a patio or drive way is fine..turn and reposition every hr or so to let all sides air dry.this may take a full day on a hot day or two days on a cooler one
