Both geniuses. Alex was actually more intelligent. I met him at the Mirage hotel in Las Vegas in 1992 and he was playing piano in three lounge. Cleaning crew recognized him and the manager of the hotel said, well whatever you do, don’t tell him to stop. Let him play. It was very early in the am and he just played and played and played. All kinds of songs. Rock, classical, jazz. Drumming with his left or right hand on the piano to keep the beat as needed. He wound up leaving with a beautiful young Latina woman who worked at the hotel.

Alex and Eddie Van Halen are Rock Gods. Immigrant kids who didn't even speak the language early on, but learned it, worked their asses off as musicians, wrote and performed amazing tunes, etc. I'm so sick to death of idiots praising Diamond Dave, who did nothing other than leeching off other peoples' talent (exhibit 1: His first solo record consisted entirely of covers. I rest my case). Meanwhile, Eddie was writing great music, and he and Alex were perfecting their art. Long live Alex and Eddie Van Halen, true geniuses. Everyone else? Hangers-on.

I think they're great too but the truth is their recording output ground to a halt after Sammy left. A few years later Eddie looked like a homeless person at death's door. If anything it's become clear over the years that the only way those two can be creatively productive is if they let someone else take the reins in the band.
