Hi Jeff, I remember you explaining about how your suppose to install the screws in the siding deep enough but not tight so the siding can move. ON my parents house I was outside cleaning the grass placed my hand on the siding to support myself and the screw poked a hole in the siding, I'm guessing because they didn't drive the screw in deep enough. What as a home owner can my Mom do about that? She paid 10,000$ for the siding install.

Wonder if the insulation is really to prevent vibration against the corrugated metal.

That's what I was thinking, just for acoustics. If they screw kind of snug where the foam is, the vinyl won't make squeaks on a windy day or whistle a tune through the corrugated metal while still being expandable.

I am replacing an old and rotted window but the window is smaller than the opening. Either I took too much off or I didn't measure it correctly but I decided to watch some of your video and plan on replacing a siding panel. During removal of the panel, I notice two soft spots on the sheathing probably due to moisture. I wonder what would have caused rain water to get inside the house wrap. House is over 20 years old and I believe the sidings are also over 20 years.

It’s possible they used the insulation to level the surface. You don’t want your siding waving at you. Also, in my state at least, you want aluminum drip cap over top of the windows. But that’s my state. Also, you can spread out an outside corner, the butt your J channel next to it on those pop out corners. If the outside corners pieces aren’t wide enough, we would typically drop small pieces in and make sure they lined up at the top. Silicone is a widely accepted method of securing top laps. The screws would drive me nuts if I had to look at them every day. I did new construction and remodels for ten + years, so I do have an idea what I’m saying. Love your videos though, and keep up the good work!

My siding just blew off during Hurricane Milton. Come to realize these guys installed it right on top of the old siding that was starting to deteriorate and allow moisture intrusion. I texted the guy about it. It's only been a little over a year. He was very apologetic, but c'mon. We both know new siding shouldn't just go on top of old siding when the customer explained they wanted the old siding gone as it was attracting carpenter ants. It's no wonder the nails came out too. The new siding was only nailed into compromised old siding with 1 1/2" nails. No match for a hurricane.

This guy talks about integrity. He is SPOT ON! I will avoid hiring a "professional" at all costs because most of them have NO integrity. They do a sh_t job because it's someone else's house. I'm dealing with this now. Jerks used a hammer to break off the drip guard then tearing up the siding instead of removing it properly. Out of sight, out of mind. This is why I despise "professionals."

I didn’t think you can put vinyl siding over the old aluminum siding?
@SpencerJohnson-f4g
@SpencerJohnson-f4g Ай бұрын
I don't think the insulation was used for insulating purposes. I believe they were using it as a spacer between the vinyl siding and the corrugated metal sheeting. That way during a wind storm you don't hear the siding slapping against the sheeting? At the same time, you also create an insulating air void between the metal sheet and the vinyl. Since metal conducts heat much better than plastic, the metal may actually get hot enough to deform the vinyl, or at least speed up the deterioration of the siding. In theory, the air space may have been placed to allow the vinyl to sit away from the hotter metal sheeting below. These are just my guesses though, because the actual insulating material should be behind the metal siding on the inside of the building. These are just my best guesses though. All things being said, the foam board that they put up wasn't causing any harm in my opinion, and they likely attached the foam board using the same screws to hold the siding on, so no extra holes other than maybe one if they tacked it up with one before installing the siding.

It’s hard to find a video of anyone else doing this on these types of home. But for some reason it bugs me every night I lay my head down and think. “I have foam board for sheathing under my siding….” I can wait to tackle it and beef this 98 manufactured home up. Absolutely true about the physical solutions versus chemistry solutions for the most part but there are some instances where a chemical solution if done right can last well beyond the life of a product. If you know your siding is going to be replaced 30 years from now there are some chemical solutions some, especially today with modern technology that can last 50 years if done right. If you want proof that it chemical solution can last a long time look at plastic. Some of it can be biodegradable but one of the worlds biggest problem is plastic isn’t biodegradable. Food for thought.

I'm not sure what you mean by sunlight burning it? Homes in north America have vinyl siding last decades. You might get some fading if that's what you mean, but it can be painted. Basically the only thing that damages it is impact damage (hail for example if it's driven sideways by wind). I would love to do something sturdier for my home but the vinyl siding is still in good shape.

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY will the siding not bend that 22.5 if you cut a small relief cut in the top of each piece and still get them to click together? I would try that first with some scrap pieces to see if it'll bend that much. or even sitting it out in the florida sun or a heat gun may allow it to bend enough so it is one solid piece that wraps around the apex in the middle.

Renter put a hole in one panel once and it took me a long time to find a shop that could color match, sorta. The texture match was impossible. There still exists fading from the sun that makes matching impossible and the corners are busted at the bottom to various degrees. Probably from hoses and sprinklers being dragged around.
